Some days you just need a reminder of all of the blessings that you have.

This morning we found our Homestead had been attacked. Our enclosure for the turkeys had been moved at such an angle that we did not know our latch did not secure the closure last night. We lost two turkeys leaving one injured and three traumatized.

Sometimes things like that happens and it is a real bummer when it does, but then I look around and see all of the blessings God has provided.

I decided this morning was a good day for a big bouquet of sunflowers and to really look around at what my garden has provided.

The bottle in the center is spray medicine for wounds that we treat our animals with. We still have one turkey that has some open wounds and we’re hopeful on its recovery.

Things happen. What we must do is learn from it, make alterations and move forward.

Saturday night my husband had to take me to urgent care. I had a UTI hit rather quickly.

Given some meds for its severity and drinking my homemade cranberry/pomegranate juice. I will be on the mend.

Slept most of Sunday and drank bone broth to help heal my body from this infection.

I will be making more juice in the fall.

Relaxing on the front porch on a summer evening feels like heaven.

Made more bone broth today and pressure canned it. Working the crockpot on homemade dog food.

Blackberry cobbler for our dessert and a semi clean house. It was a good day.

Let them be kids. Isaac has always loved fishing since he was little. He loved fishing with Drew and my Dad.

I am glad to say he has not lost his love for fishing over the years. These will make a nice meal.

Y’all we just had a day of rain. I can stop the morning watering for a couple days.

Working on bone broth from chicken carcasses that we butchers a few weeks ago.

Someday I won’t have to run a hose across a street to water my garden. Today yielded a nice harvest that makes all that effort worthwhile.
Harvested. kale, Rainbow Swiss Chard, zucchini, a cucumber, broccoli and cabbage this morning

Today Isaac was stung in the hand by one of those nasty black hornets. He said it was the most painful sting he has ever had.

We came into the house where I grabbed my baking soda and mixed it with water to create a paste that draws the venom out.

While that sat on his hand I grabbed Doterra Purify, Basil and Roman Chamomile. I knew I wanted Purify immediately because we have used that on other stings. I consulted my oil book and found basil for antibacterial and Roman Chamomile for swelling.

His hand began swelling and pain was sporadic. Three hours later swelling (that according to the internet would take two days) was down and just a little tenderness near the actual puncture spot.

Just thought I would share considering as the days heat up things with stingers can get more aggressive.

Yesterday was along day. A little under 4 hours to butcher 38 chickens. That is the most we have ever done.

Only a couple small hiccups with the burner and water temperature that had to be dealt with.

I was the ice runner and I took care of the innards and feet. Now we are letting them rest for a couple days. My part will be more intense during the break down of the birds. As the cook of the house I want certain pieces of meat.

Here is an idea though of what we will do with the whole bird.

Livers and hearts are eaten by me
Gizzards are saved for dog food
Feet are used in bone broth.
Breasts are boneless skinless
Wings for appetizers
Legs and thighs packaged for meals

Then I will do two runs of cooking on the carcasses for bone broth then what I call just broth.

I will save and pull meat of carcasses and can it in broth for casseroles

Now a third and final cooking of the bones til they are soft and I can crumble them between my fingers. This will be for dog food.

We don’t use the blood or other organs but it does go into my compost.

This is what life should always look like. This past year everyone has suffered but the children have suffered the most. These children are finding their joy again. Love this.
