Managing a Cast Horse: Dos and Don'ts

Managing a Cast Horse: Dos and Don't seem calm and lying still while waiting for help. Don't be misled by a quiet demeanor; a sudden movement can cause harm to anyone close by. Stay alert.

DO GET ASSISTANCE: Never try to assist a cast horse on your own; their size and power pose significant risks. Instead, prioritize safety by calling others to aid. Contact your primary care veterinarian, especially if the horse is distressed or likely to panic and may need sedation for a safe rescue.

DON'T TIE ROPES AROUND LEGS: To help a cast horse, avoid tying ropes around its legs. Instead, loop ropes for easy release post-flip to prevent entanglement.

DON'T PULL THE HORSE'S HEAD: Never pull on the horse's head or halter. Use the mane as a safer handle for repositioning, ideally with several people assisting. Several people pulling from the main may move the shoulders a few inches, enough to give the horse the room to get its legs out in front of it.

DO MOVE THE FRONT END FIRST: Staying clear of the legs is paramount. When aiding the horse in standing, try moving the horse's shoulders away from the wall first. Should the horse attempt to stand, you are furthest away from any flying legs and hooves.
