Monster Killer Crab Caught At AquaCorals Today!!! 4/20/11
Disappearing fish, corals missing or partially mowed/eaten over night...suspected I had a bad guy for some time but it wasn't until a week or so ago that my helper spotted a crab body shell from an apparent shed. That's when I knew I was right & the only way to get him out was to tear out every rock & inspect every hole. Who wants to do that?!! Well, we did it today. Every coral, every rock was removed & inspected...and no sign of the bad crab. Then Ryan remembered a rock with a cool Club anemone in it & when he went back to look at that rock more closely...he saw the crab!!!!!!!! We think this is a Teddy Bear crab. It was hiding WAY inside a deep hole, covered in what looked like mud. He was so well hidden it was an absolute miracle it was spotted! The amazing thing is the shell we found before was only about 1.5 inches wide (which I thought was monster size then!) but this buggar is a good THREE inches wide!! It could have easily taken down ANY fish in the tank...which, by the way, is the new 220g system which has a video here with my Moorish Idol. Needless to say the tank does not look the same but I will hopefully put it back together even better than before. :c) Moral to this story is even I'm not immune to having issues like this and as true reefers, we do what we must to have the tank of our dreams.
