When Brooke wants attention, she makes noises like a haunted house. Moaning, creaking loudly like an ancient door, howling, whines that make your hair stand on end… the repertoire is endless. Will she do it if she hasn’t had attention in hours? Yes. Will she do it if you just stopped giving her attention a nanosecond ago? Also yes. Conference calls? Yes. During dinner? Absolutely. Have company? She will bring you a leaf and serenade you with her best grating door hinge sounds. Haunted house. All. The. Time.

Happy LEAP Day! (This is an old photo of Brooke from 2016, but it’s very apt for today!)

10 years ago today, the photos of Brooke and her family living in blue barrels in New York were big news in the border collie rescue world and we were in the midst of some of the coldest weather we’d seen in awhile.

Hard to believe it’s 10 years. That means that 9.85 of those, Brooke has been in her forever home. She’s made new friends, always been the first to greet new foster dogs, gone on trips and howled at least once a month for no reason at all (or because she would like whatever you are eating). She rolls in the grass or leaves (or dirt sometimes) at least once a day, then comes inside for a snack. She has been a beloved and treasured member of our family for nearly a whole decade. She’s still sometimes skittish but after she hit around age 8-9, she decided she’s not going to be that girl anymore and will investigate new things and strange noises with the best of them. She is our perfect girl and we couldn’t love her more.

Brooke is mad because I gave her a bath. She needs baths because she rolls in the grass/dirt/interesting smelling “things”. I’ve tried explaining to her: if you don’t roll in everything your nose comes across, you wouldn’t need baths. She doesn’t listen. And is still mad because I gave her a bath.

Nine years ago, 40 border collies were surrendered by the owners of Flat Creek Border Collies after having the dogs outdoors, with nothing more than bare blue barrels for shelter. What we found as rescuers thereafter was heart wrenching - dogs so scared that rescuers thought they were blind or deaf, dogs so infested with worms it took weeks of treatment to resolve, puppies that took flight and ran from people in terror. Every dog wore a huge collar with a D-ring on the front because, as their abuser claimed, he had to be able to go out and “catch” them, hooking the D-ring with a hooked pole and dragging them in.

Brooke was one of these dogs, her photo featured here. She has never been a “normal dog”, though she is a happy dog. After nine years with us, she is still not especially vocal, and still flees to her “safe space” if she feels threatened. She still buries her head and lies so still if there are loud noises, as if she can will them away.

Like many dogs that are abused and neglected at a young age, Brooke would not be where she is without the greed of her “breeders” - people that bred dogs without knowledge or care, that didn’t even lift a finger to help their charges become balanced and socialized adults. They only cared about money, not even with 50+ dogs dying in their front yard in a historic cold snap.

If there is any lesson Brooke would want you to know, it is that you need to research your breeder. Visit the facility. See the parents. If it looks bad, REPORT IT. Brooke would be dead by now if not for those valiant folks that decided to make a big deal about these dogs and not let up the pressure on local law enforcement and the media. As Brooke’s mom, I am grateful folks spoke up but we want more people to raise their voice and do their research to make sure their dogs are not part of an endless string of puppy mill dogs, treated terribly and with no end in sight. The lessons we learned in Sprakers were humbling - don’t let it happen on your watch.
