I am heartbroken beyond belief at the loss of my personal spirit animal. Annabelle died suddenly and tragically last night. ALL of us here at BDR BULLDOGGES are shocked beyond belief.

I didn't think I would have to make this post, but clearly some education is due so here goes.

Retiring and rehoming a dog is one of the hardest things to do and decisions any breeder has to make. All good breeders, myself included, have had to retire dogs I’ve spent tons, thousands of dollars on each one. These dogs had fantastic lineage, but failed temperament or genetic testing, or passed everything with flying colors had some puppies but we weren't 100% happy with the results. Or we were blown away by the quality of puppies they had and they have reached the maximum limit of litters a dog should have in their lifetime. Talk about a hard pill to swallow!

So as a breeder, if I were simply looking to "make wads of cash" I wouldn't ever retire a dog, I wouldn't skip heats or drop thousands of dollars on one dog or put myself out over $7000 for one puppy just to see it thrive. Because money makers don't do those things.

Everyone wants a puppy, alot of people want an excellent puppy for free. But a well-bred purebred adult dog saves YOU money, training, and you know exactly what you get. Looking for a priceless, vetted, beloved retiree, that's Smart! As a breeder all I gain is knowing that retiree goes to an amazing home and hope they enjoy that dog and love it half as much as I did!

Start doing your own research. Talk to other breeders. Visit if they let you. Don't be offended if they don’t. A lot of breeders have had some crazies do some crazy things. Be respectful, open-minded and use your common sense. Someone who has 6-8 dogs that all look beautiful and healthy and happy, and running free around their house is not the same as someone who has 300 caged, dirty, sick, starved and scared dogs.

Most female dogs that breeders retire have had 1 or 2 litters and then go on to be couch warriors! People need to understand that breeders are not pet owners. Breeders are proving their dogs to represent the breed. Most breeders are working and proving their dogs in obedience, hunting, herding, field trials, or showing, doing the jobs we created dogs for.

A breeder must at some point make the choice whether or not the traits their dogs have are acceptable for society. A puppy with health or temperament issues means the breeder has failed, so a good breeder stops it in its tracks. Retiring dogs who would not create sound well mannered puppies is what a breeder should do, it’s not because the breeder is greedy, it’s quite the opposite. It would be impossible for a breeder to keep every retired dog until it passes. Right now, today, I own a dog I have owned since it was a puppy. She is 11 years old this year and will live out her days here with me. She gave me 3 beautiful litters and was retired several years ago. But we have to keep a level head. You can’t show, breed, work and train dogs and have 30 retired dogs too, it's not possible. In order to continue to provide buyers with that perfect puppy and continue to better the next generations of dogs, breeders must work hard with all of their dogs whether they choose to keep them forever or not. If all I was out to do was make cash, my 11 year old dog would have had more than 3 litters. In fact, I would have bred her every heat until she didn't give me any more puppies or she broke like puppy cash mills do. That's simply NOT ME.

"We need to stop linking breeders with puppy mills. Puppy mills are just that, a mill to produce puppies. They ARE NOT breeders. Stop confusing the two. Puppy mills breed dogs only for the money and they euthanize or dump dogs that don't make money for them." Not my words but facts!

Real Breeders care very deeply about their dogs. These great breeders study that breeds health, history, genetics, DNA, temperaments, structure, provide their daily care and do everything they can for their dogs.My dogs usually eat before I do. Most of the time my dogs actually eat better than I do because their diets are tightly calculated and so precisely calculated and planned so that I know I am providing maximum health, proper nutrition and ideal weight before, during and after each litter of puppies. This goes for males and females in my program.

When I retire a dog the new owners are given the same contract I give all my puppy buyers - spay/neuter, keep in touch, return if things don't work out for any reason etc. This is responsible breeding.
