NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue Northstar Shih Tzu Rescue (NSSTR) is an all-volunteer, 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs.

NorthStar, located in Excelsior, MN, with foster/adoption programs in the Twin Cities of MN, Chicago & Rockford IL, actively works to rescue Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs from dangerous environments and shelters with the ultimate goal of placing them in loving, permanent, adoptive homes. We rescue unwanted, abandoned, and abused dogs. We have them vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered,

provide other medical care, and rehabilitate them in carefully selected foster homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on the benefits of adopting an animal in need as well as responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, good nutrition, and positive behavior training. We strive to increase public awareness about companion animal overpopulation, commercial breeders, and to offer solutions to end the killing of adoptable animals. We work in educating and sharing with local animal shelters, pounds, other rescue groups, and humane society organizations to ensure these animals are not forgotten. Due to being a small rescue our policy is to adopt within the state of MN. We do home visits before any dog is placed for adoption.

Dogs are scared coming into rescue. Thankfully we have fosters who take them in and give them a place to feel safe outside of their cage. Many have issues with their paws, after only have wire to walk on, skin issues due to poor nutrition, being wet most of the time, and many are afraid of the human hand who is there after rescue to help them.
A rescue does so many things, but the one thing we’re always grateful for is our support team helping us help them!
Donations are still coming in, it’s not too late, and even if you don’t get to it today, we’re still here tomorrow.
Any amount helps! Our hearts are grateful to all our supporters and volunteers, we couldn’t do this without you!!

Today’s the day!
Give to the Max!
Please consider making a donation to North Star Shih Tzu Rescue. It’s a been a year of rescuing mill Shih Tzu that really put us over the top exceeding our budget. Now is the time to catch up so we can get back to doing what we do. If enough funds aren’t raised, we’re in jeopardy of having to decide if we can keep the rescue going.
Any amount will help! We love what we do and can’t do it without the help of everyone around us!

Today you will meet Atlas and learn a little bit of his family story with NorthStar.

Atlas arrived at at the rescue 5+ years ago, he was so matted that he couldn’t walk and we couldn’t tell if he was male
or female until he was groomed (for which he had to be sedated).

According to his mom, when Atlas arrived at his furever home, it took patience and understanding and love to get him as far as he is.

"Three days after I got him home, he shimmied out of his halter and off he went. He ran and ran and finally tried to hide in a hillside in a brambly bushy area. I carried him home, while he finally relaxed in my arms as we walked. Now, he’s my shadow."

"He was so afraid of thunderstorms for the first couple of years. If a storm came through in the middle of the night, he’d tremble and just stare at me until I’d wake up. I tried to calm him down verbally, then I’d pull him on top of me and pet and talk him through it. Now, he can sleep right through storms. He still afraid of most men and strangers but because of other dogs in the house, he is learning to be a brave boy."

Atlas still carries some of the tension and the stress with him, but with the help of his siblings Hemi (now a dog angel) and George (NorthStart alumni), he is learning to be a brave boy.

Please, help other puppies have a second chance in life and donate to the NorthStar Rescue.

Are you ready?!
Give to the Max week is here!! Our goal this year is to raise at least $8k so we can start taking dogs in again. We have been on intake hold@for the last two months while we financially get caught up. This isn’t just an us issue, many rescues around the country have put a hold on intakes. Why? Each dog coming into rescue, respectfully, will cost us $1000, that’s doing all vetting, dentals, spay/neuter, and of course we had our share of unexpected surgeries come up this year with the mill dogs we rescue. Vet costs have been on the rise and it affects our little rescue quite a bit.

Please consider any amount so we can get back to saving more dogs like you’ll see in the coming a few days.

Doggie Kisses! 🐾💜

This week alumni cutie is Westley (former Archie)

Westley found his furever home three years ago. He had been rescued from a puppy mill and was in foster for 6 months.

From his mom “Westley loves our whole family and every dog he meets, but Mom is “his person.” He was so gentle with our senior shih tzu that passed away a year ago and now he is so playful with our newest rescue dog, Simon. He tolerates our cat and that feeling is mutual. We adore him and can’t picture our family without him!”

Westley truly is a gentle soul. He’s so friendly with everyone he meets, both human and animal.

Northstar Rescue not only gave a new life to Westley, but also brought lot of love to his furever family.

Please, help other puppies have a second chance in life and donate to the NorthStar Rescue.

Stay tuned!! More alumni will come here to tell their stories!!

Alumni of the week: Miss Zoey

Zoey cuteness won her Foster Family!

“She was almost 5 when she came to stay with us as our first foster. She was so scared that she would not come out of the crate where she slept. We had to take it apart each morning to get her out. Eating was challenging at first but once we discovered her favorite… scrambled eggs….she quickly started to eat.

Over the years she has learned lots of dog things and found her voice! She loves to play, walk, take road trips and sleep. She is now almost 12 and realizes that cuddling isn’t so bad. She makes us laugh every day and still loves her scrambled eggs!”

Rescuing a dog brings love not only for the puppy but also to the family!

Please, help other puppies have a second chance in life and donate to the NorthStar Rescue.

Alumni of the week: Pixie

This sweet little girl, arrived at NorthStar over 3 years ago and in a very bad shape.

During her intake exams we learned that she didn’t have half of her jaw and majority of her teeth needed to be removed.

Thanks to NorthStar, today she can enjoy her life!!!
She loves cuddling with her human and with her 2 shih tzu siblings (Breezy and Jack). She is a sassy and smart little girl!

Yesterday was her 8th bday and she celebrated eating some special treats!

Please, help other puppies have a second chance in life and donate to the NorthStar Rescue.

Today is the day for you all to meet Scarlett!!

Scarlett was a breeder release from a puppy mill, she was transported during a storm in December 5 years ago.
When she arrived she was in a pretty poor state of health. She had a broken jaw and had recieved no medical attention and was severely underweight at barely 4lbs.
Thanks to Northstar she was able to have the surgery she needed to repair her jaw.
The healing process was long and required her to have it wired for 14 weeks.
With the great medical care she recieved she healed well and is now able to eat normally.
She's now a big girl weighing in at 5.6lbs!!!

She's living her best life now hanging out with 3 other resident pups all adopted through Northstar.

Please, help other puppies have a second chance in life and donate to the NorthStar Rescue.

I looove the outdoor life something that I didnt know for 7 years. Mom says I wasnt a fan in the beginning.. but it was snowing and mom made me wear a jacket..

Although I only have few teeth, my favorite thing to do is to collect rocks from the backyard and bring to my bed inside ! Yes, don’t judge me, they are awesome!!

Our campaign is live!
You may donate by visiting the link in our Bio on IG or on FB click https://givebutter.com/Yx0izp or scan the QR code for a direct link!

Ask your company to match your donation! It’s super easy!

We need your help to get back to helping out mill dogs. It’s never ending, but with the help of our supporters we are able to help many that are sitting in cages. When we get that call to help and we’re unable to help due to large vet bills we have incurred lately, it breaks our hearts.

Help us help them! 💜💜💜
