The Henhouse Hygge Erin Snyder and her family have raised chickens and ducks for nearly two decades. My name is Erin. My girls and I are so glad you could join us!

She is passionate about all things poultry but is especially interested in poultry nutrition, predator protection, egg-laying disorders, and helping chickens live their best Welcome to the Henhouse Hygge (Danish word for coziness), where we discuss chicken breeds, health concerns, predator-proofing, catch up on the lives of “the Henhouse Hygge” hens, and more. lk poultry. I am a freelance writer specializing in raising poultry. I have been honored to have my work published in Chickens, Mother Earth News, Backyard Poultry, and Hobbyfarms.com. I enjoy all things poultry-related but am especially interested in poultry nutrition, predator protection, egg-laying disorders, and helping chickens live their best lives well into their golden years. You can follow her chicken adventures on her newly hatched Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/thehenhousehygge/

Hope to see you there! While I enjoy learning about poultry health conditions, I am not a veterinarian and do not offer medical advice under any circumstances. If one or more of your flock is sick or injured, immediately take them to a licensed veterinarian who specializes in poultry.

5 REASONS NEVER TO BUY EASTER DUCKLINGS AND CHICKS:

#1 Ducks and chickens are not house pets. While ducklings and chicks easily fit into your apartment or townhome, adult poultry require a coop and run in the backyard. With no ability to house chickens and ducks, many families are forced to rehome their Easter pets.

#2 Like puppies, ducklings and chicks require proper nutrition, including age—and species-appropriate feed, probiotics, and other supplements, to grow big and strong.

#3 Ducklings and chicks require a special brooder and heat source to survive their first few weeks of life. This essential equipment adds extra cost to raising chicks and ducklings.

#4 Have you ever noticed how, shortly after Easter, white ducks appear in the city park, and the brown and white rabbit you have seen in your neighborhood doesn’t look like a cottontail? That is because many Easter ducklings, chicks, and rabbits are often dumped to fend for themselves. Not only is dumping animals and birds cruel, but it is also AGAINST THE LAW!

#5 Easter ducklings and chicks are unhealthy. Yes, it’s true! Due to the stress of living in a high-trafficked store, Easter ducklings and chicks are more likely to succumb to illness and disease. If you want to raise ducks or chickens for eggs, meat, or an all-purpose pet, check out the suggestions below.

#1 Check with your local municipality to see if owning poultry is permitted in your area.

# 2 Do your research: Including researching breeds, setup costs, and dietary needs.

#3 Go in with your eyes opened: Remember raising your own eggs will not be cheaper than buying eggs. Raising poultry is about the joy of knowing where your food comes from and the joys of interacting with the flock.

#4 Always purchase ducklings and chicks from a reputable hatchery or feed store. Avoid purchasing baby chicks or ducklings from Tractor Supply, pet stores, or lawn and garden stores.

My name is Francesca, but everyone calls me Frankie. I am a three-year-old Barred Plymouth Rock. While Lisa is friendly and outgoing, I am the shy hen of the flock. I dislike having my picture taken! I think the camera is scary, don’t you? Lisa is my good friend. Even though we often have disagreements, we always have each other’s backs. And if one of us finds mischief, the other is quick to join in!

Hello Everyone! My name is Lisa. I am three years old and the younger Golden Comet sister. As the easy-going member of the flock, I tend to be calm and friendly. I enjoy meeting new people, eating treats, spending time with my human mom, and going outside. I also enjoy thinking of new ways to tease the other hens.

My name is Poppy. I am a Golden Comet, five years old, like Matilda. Mommy often refers to us as her “two favorite five-year-olds.” Matilda is my best friend. We have had many fun times together and are constantly at each other’s side. While we are best friends, we are opposites. Matilda may always be in a hurry, but I like to take life leisurely. And, like all good pets, I dislike going to the vet!

My name is Matilda. I am a five-year-old Speckled Sussex. I am a busy hen who loves to scratch through the straw and dirt, looking for tasty things to eat. My human Mommy describes me as always being in a hurry. Peas, salad greens, and herbs are some of my favorite treats. Well, I have things to do, so I must hurry along. Happy Scratching!!
