One of the most crucial decisions we've encountered while creating our products is determining what to package them in. Sustainability has always been at the core of our values, and I want to take a moment to share with you why we've chosen the packaging we have.
First and foremost, I've always been passionate about recycling. Whether it's putting bottles into the recycling bin, repurposing cardboard boxes from gifts, or responsibly disposing of soft plastics at our local supermarket, I firmly believe in giving existing materials a new lease on life. That's where recycled bottles come into play for us.
By using recycled plastic bottles, we're not only diverting waste from landfills but also reducing the demand for new plastic production. Did you know that it takes 75% less energy to make a plastic bottle using recycled plastic compared to newly made plastic? Additionally, plastic's lightweight nature cuts down on transportation costs and carbon emissions. Plus, plastic bottles are incredibly efficient at safely storing liquids, making them ideal for shipping and storage.
While there are alternatives to plastic, such as glass or metal, they too come with their own environmental considerations. Glass and metal, though recyclable, can still contribute to land and sea litter if not properly disposed of. Assessing the environmental impact of packaging materials involves considering various factors, from recyclability to production processes.
We've explored other options, like bio-based sugar cane bottles, but found that the environmental footprint isn't always as green as it seems. Chemical fertilisers and heavy machinery used in their production can offset their eco-friendly qualities. Additionally, as a small business, we must consider practicality, including minimum order quantities. Sometimes, options like bio-based plastics aren't feasible due to large order requirements.
At present, we've settled on using recycled plastic bottles and aluminium tins. These materials are not only recyclable but also offer practical benefits for our business. However, our commitment to sustainability doesn't stop here. We're constantly searching for better alternatives and innovations in packaging. When we find a more eco-friendly option, you can trust that we'll embrace it wholeheartedly.
Sustainability is complex, and there's no one-size-fits-all solution. What's essential for us is transparency and honesty. We want you to know why we've made the choices we have and assure you that we're always striving to do better for our planet.
We look forward to sharing our journey with you 💚
