Ruby is retired from our program. She truly was a wonderful mom and really enjoyed raising her pups. Her babies live with wonderful families in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan on farms, ranches, in the mountains, in small towns and in big cities. Twelve of her offspring have been donated/gifted as special companions, therapy and service dog prospects. Though Ruby’s days as a stay-at-home mom have come to an end, her journey certainly has not. Ruby is currently working as a demo dog(coaching service dog teams) and she is a registered Therapy Dog with Pet Partners. I am so proud of her!

Happy birthday, to Buddy, The first Seeing Eye dog! Buddy was born on October 15, 1926, in Switzerland. About 16 months later she was matched with Morris Frank, a 20-year-old college student and insurance salesman who had traveled from America to be matched with a dog who could guide a blind person. He promptly renamed the German shepherd Buddy. This historic photo shows Morris Frank being guided around a tricycle on a sidewalk by Buddy.
Morris and Buddy traveled the country demonstrating that it really was possible for a dog to work as a guide. But soon they had another challenge: public access. Many stores, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses had a strict "no dogs allowed" policy, and there were no exceptions for service dogs -- after all, they had just been invented! Morris and Buddy campaigned tirelessly for the right to go anywhere that any other member of the public can go. While giving a speech in Washington, D.C., someone had the bright idea of having Morris give a demonstration of Buddy's abilities -- without telling Morris about it. The route Morris had taken to the stage to give his talk was quietly blocked with chairs. When Morris gave Buddy the command to leave the stage the way they'd come, she refused. "She had watched the whole proceeding from the platform and had seen the complicated series of impediments set up for us," Morris wrote in "First Lady of The Seeing Eye". "Without a second's hesitation she simply took me the quickest, safest way to our destination."
Rather than navigating through the obstacle course, Buddy led Morris across the stage and to a different, unblocked aisle. Problem solved! "The audience went wild with applause. By taking the commonsense way out of our predicament, Buddy had given a far more remarkable demonstration of her prowess than they had ever anticipated," Morris wrote.

If you are considering hiring a dog trainer in western Canada, please reach out as I would be happy to help you connect with a trusted professional. Having a coach to support you in reaching your goal(s) is a worthwhile investment. Trainers can assist you with foundation to advanced training; socialization and exposure activities; identifying, preventing and addressing challenges as well as providing structure and accountability. My personal experience with both aspiring and established humane and evidence-based trainers has been invaluable in my personal growth and my everyday life with dogs!

Maize’s puppy(service prospect) is out and about with her trainer. The pup’s family chose to name her Georgia which means “farmer” or “earth worker” ❤️.

Sweet Ms. Georgia wants everyone to know Homesense is the most welcoming and interesting puppy-friendly place. Entering sliding doors, experiencing changes in surfaces, the elevator, wheeling carts and strollers, meandering up and down isles, exploring safe items but doing engage/disengage, saying Hi to a couple of folks (and a lot of look and look away for many others), doing a few off-switches here and there (testing out this "settle mat" to generalize the behavior), falling in love with a big cuddle bunny toy to celebrate at the end and take home. I told her and her Mom it would be a delightful and easy breezy field trip for this confident and resilient girl

Introducing these sweet puppies! Through a collaborative effort, this litter was bred and raised for a government-qualified service dog organization/private placement. Raising them from birth has been a rewarding experience and I am humbled to have been entrusted with their care. Thank you to everyone who is and will be a part of their journey to life-changing service & support dogs(or special companions).

Great news! Qualified service dog providers in Alberta will receive some government support to help them in raising, training and placing assitance dogs. Some of our prospect puppies are working with trainers from AB’s list of approved organizations (https://www.alberta.ca/approved-service-dog-organizations.aspx -0). Perhaps we will someday see a similar program here in Saskatchewan (and across Canada) to improve access to service dogs.

We are raising one more litter this year for a service dog organization/private placement(pups are all reserved) and that will likely be it for 2022 as I’ll be focusing on continuing education. I’m currently in the home-stretch of CMAC(Centre for the Study of Medical Assistance Canines)’s year-long program, I am a student of the ISCP(International School for Canine Psychology and Behaviour)’s Canine Behaviour Diploma program and I am starting VSA(Victoria Stilwell Academy)’s professional dog trainer course. I am also working on a special project that will make for a busy summer and fall. Learning is a never-ending journey!

To better support our families and puppies, I am happy to announce that I can now offer the Karen Pryor Puppy Start Right preschool program. This is a comprehensive course covering puppy socialization and exploration, growth and development, intro to clicker-training, foundation training exercises as well as problem solving and prevention. Because our puppy families span across the four western provinces, I invested in Karen Pryor’s online delivery option so that everyone can participate and benefit from this reputable program. I am making this available for our 2022 litters and at no cost to their future families.

The sensitive period of development (from approximately 3-16 weeks of age) is the most influential learning period of a dog’s life. As soon as our puppies go home, their families will be invited to join me in weekly zoom classes for live discussions, Puppy Start Right curriculum delivery, support and guidance. The virtual interactions will facilitate the opportunity for families of littermates to connect, relate and share in the journey of raising a puppy. I will also be sending puppies home with the book: Puppy Start Right, Foundation Training for the Companion Dog.
