CAT FOOD REVIEW - Smalls for Cats
*I was not compensated nor received free product for this review.*
The Kanselaar Kitties get wet food for breakfast and dry kibble to much on throughout the day. For wet food, Friskies, Fancy Feast, and Weruva brands were our go-to.
Our boy, Chappie, fell sick last year with pancreatitis. He lost a lot of weight and I was afraid we'd lose him because he just wasn't eating. I started him on B12 and together with our vet, we finally got him to start eating again, but he only would eat certain flavors of fancy feast, and a stew food topper. However, he would still go some days without eating, and he'd often puke when he did eat. I had a few other cats puke at least once or twice a week as well, so I knew it was time to make a change.
I set out to find better food and that's when I came across Smalls. Human-grade wet food that claims to increase the health of your cats and have many positive reviews. I will admit their marketing caught my attention as well! I decided to try them out. They offer a sampler box (14 packets) of their different flavors.
Friskies is essentially "junk food" for cats, but any wet food is better than no wet food, so please do not take this as me dissing Friskies. I'm not. I've been buying Friskies for years and I'm glad it's an affordable option. That being said, it does have fillers and by-products which can make a cat's stomach hurt, and essentially puke. Also, when a cat is fed junk food and then you switch to a higher quality food, they may stick their nose up at it. So, you have to give it some time.
On Day 1, I put out Smalls, fancy feast, and Friskies. Chappie attacked the Smalls and licked his plate clean (yay). About three other cats ate the Smalls happily, but the rest of them maybe tried a bit and then went back to their junk food. Throughout the next two weeks, I started to see a shift. I noticed the Smalls food was gone first (again, plates licked clean) and Friskies/Fancy Feast was not eaten as much. They started preferring Smalls and were now loving the food. I also noticed I only had ONE time within those two weeks where someone puked, and it WASN'T Chappie! 🥰
After two weeks, I ran out of Smalls and my next box wasn't to be shipped for another two weeks. I fed my cats the regular Friskies and Fancy feast, with some Weruva and I noticed they were not eating it like they were before I introduced Smalls. I'd put the food out and a couple of them (Chappie being the ringleader) would stare at me like, "Where is that good stuff?" I had to cut down on the number of cans of Friskies I put out because a lot of it was now going to waste. And...the puking was back. 😫
Smalls is a hit for the Kanselaar Kitties and I plan to continue to get this food for our babies. Chappie's health has improved and I'm no longer concerned about his weight. He's first in line for breakfast and he's becoming his old self again, including bullying his siblings. 🙄
Smalls is an auto-ship type subscription and not available in stores. Some won't like that, but you can control your delivery frequency, box size, add-ons, skip a delivery, and cancel online at anytime so it's very easy to control. They send you reminder emails also, so you don't forget. And, they send a bag of free treats with every shipment. My cats go CRAZY for these treats!
Smalls comes frozen and you thaw each packet out in the fridge before serving, so there is a bit of planning involved, but the thawed packet can be kept in the fridge up to 7 days. These recipes are rich in animal protein, low in carbohydrates, and minimally processed. They’re also free from artificial additives, including preservatives. The consistency reminds me of wet sand, but I feel it has more moisture than a standard wet pate. They have many flavors, chicken, turkey, beef, fish, and pork. My cats liked all the flavors but one - the fish, which is a cod and salmon mix. Luckily, you get to choose what is in your box so you don't get any flavors your kitties don't like. Some packets are considered "premium flavors" so they are an extra $.50 per packet. Again, you can choose what is in your box to avoid any of these if you wish.
Please do your own research, but Smalls gets an A- rating on https://cats.com/cat-food-reviews
So, let's talk about the potential down side. The price. Each packet is about $5, but the bigger box you get, the price drops lower, so about $4 for the largest box, or $3,50 if you want to buy in bulk. For the sampler box, they offer 50% off, so I got the sampler for less than $30. And on your first "full" box, you get 15% off of that. It's a nice discount so you can try it out first. And they also offer a referral program for a free box (link is posted below).
It is kind of annoying, but when you first go to their site, they make you fill out a survey about your cat(s). You can't avoid it. I did not enter in all my cats, just one cat because they will recommend how many packets (aka size of box(es)) you will need, but you still have the choice on what to get. It doesn't lock you into anything.
There is no way I can feed ONLY Smalls to 12 cats for that price, so I'm going to offer Smalls and subsidize with another higher quality food. There were a lot of reviews that said their cat wouldn't touch the food, but introducing any new food to a cat is going to take time...they are cats after all! I joked that they loved the sampler so much, when I get my first full box, they'll decide they won't like it anymore, but luckily, that wasn't the case. They continue to love the food.😂
