This is so clearly stated. This is one of the reasons that training a dog to walk come later in the lessons. I would love to help you teach your dog the art of being calm!

That pulling, chaotic, reactive walk that’s driving you crazy — it was created by way of countless moments of allowance of pushy, bratty, overly excited behavior that happened long before you ever hit the streets.

It’s like letting your kids be bratty, entitled monsters at home, because it’s not that big of a deal — and then heading out to a nice dinner and telling them they’d better behave.

Haha…

If you want a fighting chance at a nice, polite, enjoyable, and safe walk, it’s time to take a look at all the non-walk moments occurring between you and your dog and have an honest conversation with yourself about how it all looks.

While it’s possible, it’s wildly unlikely that you’ve got an amazingly well behaved dog in all other contexts, and yet your walk is a disaster. Everything matters, and everything is a conversation that either tells your dog there are rules and standards — and consequences for breaching them… or not.

If the walk is a mess, START with reversing/transforming the first 5 items on the above list — that’s a solid beginning. And then, when you’re ready to make some major positive changes, take a look at the final one, prepare yourself for a serious challenge, and then get to work.

I get asked about potty training ALL the time. I also see folks using potty pads A LOT.

And don't get me wrong, they do have a place... tiny dogs with owners with mobility issues (especially in winter), small dogs who travel a lot who can use a pad anywhere successfully, etc.

But the majority of dogs being "trained" to use potty pads are dogs who really should be going outside even when they are small, even when it rains, even when it's hot or cold.

Because most of the time these dogs aren't even reliably trained to the pad.

What they are reliably trained to do is p*e and p**p in the house. 💩

Dogs generally pull about 60 per cent harder on a leash when wearing a padded harness compared with a collar, even when the equipment is marketed as “anti pull” – putting the people walking them at risk of injury.

Some dogs – especially smaller breeds – pull with a force more than twice their body weight on the collar, potentially damaging their throats, says Erin Perry at Southern Illinois University.

“It’s really very shocking,” she says. “The dogs are almost choking themselves on that collar repeatedly. But the harnesses in our study just didn’t inhibit pulling in any way, and that’s definitely a wake-up call – especially because of the risk to owners.”
