Gonzales is a rural town, 60 miles from both Austin and San Antonio, and has a population of only around 8,000 residents. However, our small shelter intakes about 30+ dogs a month on average. We ar

e an open-door facility, which means we cannot turn away ANY dogs from the City of Gonzales, and our shelter has a maximum capacity of 20 -25 dogs. We try EXTRA hard not to put down ANY adoptable dogs for the sole reason of making space, and have maintained our status as one of the very few “Open-Door-NO-Kill” Municipal Shelters in TX. Unfortunately, the more our reputation spreads, the MORE people OUTSIDE OF GONZALES COUNTY ask us to take over their dogs. HOWEVER, we are NOT legally allowed to take in dogs in other county. Thank you for understanding. We rely on donations and adoption fees to cover operational costs. Any donations are greatly appreciated. All of the dogs at our shelter have been fully vaccinated and have been spay/neutered. Come and Adopt’em!

RAWHIDE IS TERRIBLE FOR DOGS! PLEASE AVOID IT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON (and always!)

We know your heart is in the right place when you buy these. You want to make your pup feel special and include them in the season of giving, and that’s awesome. But at best, these are poor quality “treats” that will kill some time for a bored dog. At worst, they will send your dog to the ER when the slippery texture of the rawhide causes your dog to swallow a piece that’s too large. And they aren't easily digestable and can cause longterm intestinal blockages.

You should also consider the chemicals that ultimately make up these holiday treats. Cute as they are, they begin with heavy chemicals to strip the hide from the fur and eliminate the smell (yuck!), giving it that bright white color. Next, they’re mixed with artificial dyes to get that festive red and green color, and some will even use glue to achieve the right shape.

If you really want to give your pup something special this year, there are so many safer, healthier alternatives. Things like filled Kongs, Greenies, bully sticks (with supervision), SmartBones, soft chews, meal toppers, goats milk, or even make your own with pet-friendly recipes. But please… don’t buy these!

Reclaiming Your Dog

Visit City Hall or Police Department to pay $25 PRIOR TO coming to Gonzales Dog Adoptions. A RECEIPT IS NEEDED FROM THEM FOR US A TO BE ABLE TO RELEASE THE DOG

Then visit us at 400 CR 488, Gonzales, TX 78629 (10am-3pm, Mon-Sat) with cash or checks for our release fees.

Release Requirements
- Proof of ownership (photos/vet records)
- ID (Driver's License/state-issued)
- Written proof of current rabies vaccination (If the owner does not have proof of current rabies vaccination, the dog will be transferred to a local Vet for vaccination, and the owner must pay the vaccination fee before the dog is released.)

Dogs without identification are held for three days, according to Gonzales City code. Dogs not claimed by owners may become candidates for GDA's adoption program.

Red is a sweet and friendly boy who gets along with everyone - humans, dogs, kids, and likely even cats and chickens! 🐈🐓 He's ready to find his forever home, but his medical condition has been discouraging potential adopters. 👎🏻 ⚕️Medical Condition: Red has an abnormal leg due to past neglect, requiring future Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) surgery. Although he's currently comfortable and not in pain, the surgery is recommended to prevent early-onset arthritis. GDA will cover the surgery costs! 🐾Recovery Care: We want Red to recover in a comfortable and loving environment, not a shelter kennel with a concrete floor, so his surgery has been postponed until he is adopted!
