Mid-Atlantic Border Collie Rescue Mid-Atlantic Border Collie Rescue is a haven for Border Collies that have been misplaced, neglected, or abandoned.

Mid-Atlantic Border Collie Rescue is a boutique breed specific rescue uniquely qualified to improve the lives of misplaced border collies by placing them into homes matching the individual needs of each dog. Knowing and caring for this breed for more than 30 years has provided MABCR with the skills to take dogs from uncertain futures, and place them into caring, responsible homes. MABCR is a 501(c

)3 organization run primarily by volunteers who have direct knowledge of living and working with border collies. MABCR currently serves the Mid-Atlantic region — including Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and West Virginia, as well as the District of Columbia. We will consider applications outside of our normal coverage area on a case by case basis.

We have been told that it is not okay to say this is enough.

And that is not ok.

With ourselves and with our animals.

We have loved ones with horrible diagnosis and for a while the protocols are helping and their life is going pretty well. But when things stop working family members urge them to try one more thing. Hang on longer. Give us more time with you.

It's so sad to see the person suffering through agony and nausea and being bedridden, just to fulfill those pleas.

Our animals are living longer and that is terrific. But because it is so very hard on us to have them such a relatively short period of time, sometimes we drag them along, telling ourselves they are fine...let them hobble painfully around, drug them to a high degree so that they lay around in a stupor all day but don't appear to be suffering. Spending money that we don't have. We buy ourselves another year in these ways.

But is it too much?

Or we do all kinds of crazy things, that are cumbersome and weary us down to our bones to keep something going. A ridiculous routine that others look at us and wonder how we sustain, that chains us in ways we are unable to objectively look at and say,

This is enough.

Whether that be a schedule that you have with your children, or your own activities, or demands that others place on you, or just a sum total of everything.

We need to learn to say, "I have done all that I can do and that is enough. It is now time to let that go."

Sure, don't just abandon whatever cold turkey. If you have committed to being the soccer mom for this season then finish it out. If you have an elderly animal you have been dedicated to, of course they still need taken care of the very best until that last breath is taken.

But daily, and we mean daily, we see good people who have started something they intended to be a wonderful thing, not be able to say they have done enough and burn out, or burn through all the funds, or burn their helpers out.

And thereby reducing their good intentions to ashes.

If you start a rescue, for example, learn when an animal has too much going on, give them a good day, and let that be enough to let them go. Spend those funds helping the three who just need a dental and a spay instead.

And gosh this is hard, because society tends to tell us to not give up, to try more, to spend more, to wait more, to do more.

For the good of ourselves and the welfare of others we have to get comfortable with, and get good at, the word Enough.

Don't forget to use your pups basic commands and celebrate those little victories! 🐕‍🦺
Train your pet to sit in 4 easy steps:
1. Stand in front of your dog with a treat
2. Hold the treat near your dogs nose
3. Lift the treat up and past their head. This naturally gets them to look up and sit down.
4. Reward your dog and repeat

What should you know about H5N1?

⚠️ H5N1, a type A influenza virus, is spreading among birds and some mammals in the U.S., including cats.

Here’s how you can help protect your pets:

· Avoid feeding raw meat or dairy.
· Keep cats indoors to limit exposure to wildlife.
· While the risk to dogs is less clear, it’s best to keep all pets away from dead animals, livestock, wildlife, and their waste.
· If your pet shows signs of illness, such as lethargy, fever, or respiratory issues, contact your veterinarian.

This is a developing situation, but taking simple precautions can help keep your pet safe. Check out our graphic for more details and share it to raise awareness.

Cliff -- Available!!
Intake date 19 July 2021
neutered male chocolate tri herding breed mixy-mix, appx weight 35ish lbs
Approximate birthdate 18 February 2021
You've heard of Clifford the big red dog? Well, this is Cliff, the little red dog 🙂 Cliff was transferred to us from an all breed rescue for placement by a breed specific rescue. Up to the point where we received him, Cliff had been carried around quite a bit, and had developed some trust issues and defensive fear related behaviour. He has spent quite a bit of time with us learning big dog behaviour and is a kennel favorite. He is snuggly and sweet with his people, adores playing with other dogs, and is super responsive to appropriate training and well set parameters.
Cliff has excellent recall, and is well crate trained. Additionally, he does well in a box kennel with other dogs, and really loves his peeps -- canine and human.
Anyone interested in adopting Cliff should be prepared to continue the work started here. Cliff is well crate trained, is a super dog/dog player, and will thrive with well set boundaries, lots of play and training. Cliff is available to an experienced training centered home, with multiple stable dogs. He will not be placed into a home with children.
This dog is located in Maryland - we do not ship or transport dogs. For information on adoption, an FAQ, and our application, please see our website at mabcr.org. If you are interested in adoption, please submit an application, complete with documentation.
Dogs that have not lived previously with children will not be offered to homes where young children reside. We do not 'test' dogs with children or cats, since testing may not show an accurate picture, and may give false comfort to their new home. If a dog has lived with children or cats, that will be stated above.
Please note that some young dogs may be placed with a neuter deposit and contract, and any available dog may be placed with a training deposit and contract -- this would be noted on offer, prior to placement. For additional information on these policies, please see our website.
Questions about dogs are generally not answered here due to lack of staffing.
Additional information and photos will be posted here as time permits.

Beau -- Available!
Intake date 4 January 2025. appx 2 year old, neutered male black and white rough coat. Weight on intake 36lbs, and could stand to gain 5ish . Beau came to us from a shelter partner, where he had been surrendered by his owner for unknown reasons. On arrival, Beau was shut down and shy, though came around to being handled fairly quickly. . Five days here and Beau has gone out to play with the other pups in residence. He is more comfortable here, however, will need folks in his life who will be patient and understanding with helping him build partnership and confidence. . This dog is located in Maryland - we do not ship or transport dogs. For information on adoption, an FAQ, and our application, please see our website at mabcr.org. If you are interested in adoption, please submit an application, complete with documentation. . Dogs that have not lived previously with children will not be offered to homes where young (generally under 12) children reside. We do not 'test' dogs with children or cats, since testing here will not show an accurate picture, and may give potential adopters false comfort. If a dog has lived with children or cats, that will be stated in their description. We do begin crate training all dogs on intake, however, we do not guarantee housebreaking, though most dogs are situationally housebroken. . We do not place dogs as ESA, nor will we place a dog as hypo-allergenic. Applicants interested in adoption of a potential service dog must be working with an experienced trainer. Please indicate on the application what skills a potential service dog will be asked to perform. . In general, we do not DNA test our dogs in residence. If we do not know a dogs genetic background, we will not advertise it as such, and would prefer that folks not 'guess' publicly. . Please note that some dogs may be placed with an alter deposit and contract, and any dog of any age may be placed with a training deposit and contract -- this would be noted on offer, prior to placement. For additional information on these policies, please see our website. . Questions about dogs are generally not answered here due to lack of staffing. All available dogs may not be listed on our website due to time constraints and does not effect a specific dog's availability. Additional information and photos will be posted here as time permits.
