It's officially the first day of Winter! ❄☃
Here are some tips for keeping pets safe in the winter:
•Keep them inside: Bring your pet inside when it's cold outside. A general rule of thumb is that if it's too cold for you, it's probably too cold for your pet.
•Protect their paws: Before going outside, massage petroleum jelly or a vet-approved paw protectant into your pet's paws. You can also use booties to protect their paws from salt and sand. After walks, wash and dry your pet's feet and stomach to remove salt, ice, and chemicals.
•Take care of their coat: A longer coat will provide more warmth. If your dog is long-haired, trim it to prevent ice balls, salt crystals, and de-icing chemicals from drying their skin. If your dog is short-haired, consider getting them a sweater or coat.
•Provide food and water: Outdoor pets need more food in cold weather. Make sure your pet has access to clean drinking water that doesn't freeze.
•Watch for antifreeze: Antifreeze is deadly to pets. Clean up any spills immediately.
•Check for frostbite: Check your pet for frostbite, especially on their ears and paws.
•Be careful with space heaters: Use space heaters with caution.
•Knock on your car: If you're parked outdoors and suspect a cat might be under the hood or in the wheel wells, knock on the hood before starting the engine
