You know the scene too well: you've turned away for a moment and left your sandwich on the counter, and then it's gone! And your dog is gulping it down, after grabbing it off the counter.

Here are 3 quick tips to curb counter-surfing!

1️⃣ Prevent Access: Put food away or use baby gates to make sure your pup can't get any good stuff off the counter. Every time your dog snags a delicious snack from the counter, this behavior is rewarded!

2️⃣ Teach Alternative Behaviors: Reward your pup for keeping “4 on the floor” near counters instead of jumping up. Over time, you can add food so they practice ignoring the good stuff.

3️⃣ Practice Everywhere: Reinforce these habits on different surfaces and in various situations to help your dog generalize. Practice with kitchen counters, coffee table, dining room, or any other places your dog could have a chance to steal food.

Let’s come together to shatter the stereotypes and misinformation surrounding these incredible dogs. "Pitbulls" are not just a breed; they are loving companions, loyal friends, and often, the most misunderstood members of our canine community.

Here are some common stereotypes we need to challenge:

1."Pitbulls are aggressive – Aggression is not a breed trait; it’s a result of environment, training, and socialization. Every dog deserves a chance to show their true personality!

2.They can't be trusted around children – Many Pitbulls are gentle and nurturing, forming strong bonds with kids. Proper training and supervision are key.

3. "Pitbulls* are fighting dogs – This stereotype is rooted in history and media sensationalism. The reality is that with the right love and care, they thrive as family pets.

4.They can't be trained– Pitbulls are intelligent and eager to please, making them highly trainable with positive reinforcement techniques.

Let’s advocate for a breed-neutral approach in Ontario and work to end breed-specific legislation (BSL). Every dog, regardless of breed, deserves a loving home and a fair chance.

September is National Service Dog Month!

Meet Mimoo, a 3-year-old cream standard poodle. Mimoo is a multi-purpose service dog who provides numerous tasks to help his handler with her disabilities.
“One of my favorite things he does for me is his medical alerts. He gives me up to a 10-minute warning before a medical episode. I find dog noses to be extraordinary,” says Mimoo’s handler.

Mimoo is in an Agency Assist Training Program with Ability Dogs Canada.

Meet Montana, a 5-year-old black lab/mastiff cross.
Montana is certified through Paw & Order in Manitoba which is affiliated with MSAR.

Our trainer was Yury and he was excellent!

“Montana is task trained in the D’s - dissociation, distraction, DPT (deep pressure therapy) and creating distance,” says Montana’s handler. “These help me navigate among crowds and keeps my stress levels minimal and my focus on the present. I am a retired first responder and Montana helps manage my PTSD symptoms. I am a big mental health advocate and I am ok disclosing my disability when people ask why I have a service dog. I obviously ‘look ok’ and understand why folks ask. I know this is a touchy and/or off-limits subject with many service dog handlers so I make sure to include an educational disclaimer about that specific question not being a comfortable one for most service dog handlers to answer and explain the reasons for it. My kids are super active in sports so Montana chills with me in the stands, whether it be at a hockey rink or gymnasium. Be aware of toxic plants in your pet's environment. Stay safe!

As we transition into fall, pet parents must remain vigilant about the plants surrounding their homes to ensure their four-legged companions stay safe. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) has provided a comprehensive guide to the top 10 fall plants, shedding light on their potential risks to pets.

While Mums may adorn many doorsteps, they pose a threat to dogs and cats if ingested, leading to symptoms like vomiting and dermatitis. Asters, on the other hand, are a safe alternative to Mums, providing beauty without posing a threat to pets.

Ginkgo Trees exhibit a gender divide, with male trees being safe for pets while female trees' seeds contain toxins, potentially resulting in vomiting and seizures.

Fountain Grass and Russian Sage are among the non-toxic options, offering aesthetic appeal without endangering pets. However, it's important to note that while considered ""non-toxic,"" all plant material consumed by pets may cause mild gastrointestinal problems.

As pet parents, it's our responsibility to be aware of the potential risks associated with seasonal plants and to take precautions to keep our furry companions safe and healthy. By staying informed and proactive, we can ensure a happy and hazard-free fall for our beloved pets.
