This is part of our charitable mission: fighting extinction. Whilst rhinos are well outside of Blue Highlands Bird Rescue’s wheel house (we are an avian-only sanctuary, education and crisis care organisation) the fight is the same. And the individual and species losses are just as crushing. The White Rhino is functionally extinct now. With its only male gone, and the only two females left cannot maintain a pregnancy, we are witnessing the fall of a beautiful giant. A great tree we ourselves felled. Like so many other trees, figuratively and literally.

This is a terrible practice. Please educate anyone you know who may be planning such releases. It’s a guaranteed death sentence for these poor domesticated birds. They’re completely unprepared for life in the wild. If they aren’t predated, they starve, die due to weather/exposure or are hit by vehicles. 😓 And then they end up here or in another shelter.

***NOTE*** THIS POST IS NOT ABOUT AVIAN FLU: No known cases in The Highlands at this time! This is about BIRD Pox—affects mostly garden birds eating from dirty feeders. We have this disease with us all the time, but we can work to bring infections DOWN. That said, please read on.

It’s back, everyone. Avian Pox (commonly referred to as bird pox). PLEASE remember to clean your feeders (preferably with bleach 1 part to 8 parts water) monthly if not weekly. It’s a devastating illness and is highly contagious. 🙏❤️‍🩹

Beautifully said…. So often we miss the beauty because of over-exposure or ubiquity. Respect🌹🌹🌹

What a wonderful day at the Hub, entertainment, a cuppa, 🫖 good friends and hot meal… 🥘 what more could you need..

Our morning started with a natter & a cuppa, no better way to start the day, catching up with each others news..

Soon after tea we had a lovely visit from the lovely Hadassah and her absolutely beautiful feathered friends.. 🐦 🦜 🦉
She gave a superb talk on everything from the amount of food they require, alongside time & dedication, these beautiful birds had this in abundance from Hadassah.. 🦉
It was obvious the great rapport she had with these birds, there was a passion in the way she talked about them & her dedication to them was second to none… truly to be admired.

We were given the chance to ask questions & also allowed to pet and my goodness the feathers are soooo soft, but we have to bear in mind these are not cuddly animals, the talons were massive, so impressive…
Thank you for your valuable time and a great morning Sarunac Hadassah🥰🦉🦜🐦

Soon it was lunchtime & Kevin Payne 👨‍🍳 did not fail to impress with his lovely meal that was prepared by himself & his understudy Carrie Fraser 👨‍🍳 Thank you guys 🥰

Our afternoon led us into games and passed the afternoon for us..
A great day had by all..

Just another day at the Brora Village Hub 🥰xx

UPDATE: one of the best talks ever. Thank you all involved🌹🌹😍😍

REMEMBER! 10:30 Bird talk at THE BRORA HUB, Brora, Highlands. Meet a few of our resident birds, learn about what BHBR does and why it’s so important, what the future holds, and learn some fascinating facts about our feathered friends! Can’t make it? We will try to post some snippets, but the colloquium is 2 hours long with Q&A so better to see in person. 🌹

Education about Psitticines (parrotlets, parrots, macaws). Understanding a bit about their emotional/psychological wellbeing and how their beautiful minds work.🌹💕 The first few seconds are quiet because I’m sitting at my desk watching to see if he is going to disobey and try to climb atop the cage again. Explanation follows. He is really trying to behave today😍

WHAT A TOUCHING MORNING SURPRISE! AND A RARE TREAT! A dear conservationist colleague who works with me internationally with owls wrote me this (he’s top 5% of his field, published hundreds of times, and a real gift to aviculture).:
Hi there Hadassah. It has been a little too long my dear. I am sending a photo of a baby Flammulated Owl. They are kinda precious. Very nocturnal, forest insect eaters. They are forest gremlins. Seldom heard, never seen, but always precious.
Kind of like you. 🌹❤️. Reclusive introvert few get to know.

**UPDATE: only 2 Available now! These are from the oldest breeder of Javas in England and also deeply involved in conservation of turtle dove populations. **

IF you’ve ever wanted a pet bird that is incredibly gentle and cannot/will not hurt children, our Java Doves have had babies and we have a breeding pair. WE DON’T sell birds. These are for loving placement in forever home only, and are extremely affectionate. They enjoy being handled and are young and healthy. Very little avian experience needed. Inexpensive to keep and maintain. Delightful. PM me if you’re interested. Brora pick up only.

Good morning everyone. 60% lung capacity. So thankful to breathe! ❤️‍🩹

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
As many of you know, I have been battling pneumonia for nearly 3 months. Three courses of antibiotics in different families did not work. I grew worse, much worse, and have by this time lost 11.5 kilos in 12 weeks—which was rather confusing in an otherwise very healthy woman with zero daily medications and no prescription resistance. Finally the condition culminated in a trip to Raigmore for a battery of tests including CT scan.

My babies got the chance to spend some much-needed quality time with our dear friends in Inverness while I got to get poked and prodded,

What was supposed to be an afternoon outpatient experience, quickly devolved into a crisis when they learned I had less than 10% functioning lung capacity. That afternoon turned into a 2 day, 2 night stay in the respiratory ward on massive doses of prednisolone. Thankfully —profoundly thankfully—my body responded quickly and what was a terrifying near- death experience slowly resolved… and I took a decent breath of air for the first time in 3 months. There really aren’t words to express the particular nature of that profound relief.

I got home yesterday about 4 pm and I’m slowly recovering at home. So why am I sharing this private information? Because the diagnosis is pneumonitis. In lay terms, bird fancier’s lung. Thirty-five years of bird care, crisis intervention, deep cleaning in and outside, has culminated in a massive and life-threatening inflammatory response.

AS OF NOW: ALL 24-hour bird crisis intake must divert to Jane at Highland Wildlife Rescue. She is MORE than competent and even if there is a very unusual, complicated case, she has me available for any video consult. In point of fact, her knowledge had exceeded mine regarding many avian species— she has my 100% trust as a rehabilitator and as a beautiful human being.

I’d like to say this is a temporary situation, but all three of my specialists are quite adamant that this crisis will only be controlled by following a specific, detailed plan. This means no more en masse bird intakes obviously, and greatly modifying my professional role. All of this has hit hard and we have really been dealt a blow. At this point, my recovery is paramount. Afterward, the natural evolution seems to be a role focusing on the education, conservation and consultation branch of our charity’s work.

As to my succession, my daughter Angelina will complete her training under me, and I will pass the proverbial BHBR crisis care torch on to the next generation. She is already preparing a new chick shack abroad and has taken on her first patients, including a mynah bird.

While I’m proud to bursting of her and her husband… it’s a blow to be forcibly retired from my specialty in critical care, wing reparation, etc., seemingly overnight. Psychologically it’s a great deal to take in. Frankly it seems a cruel and highly ironic blow.

May I just say how tearfully grateful I am to my dearest friends, supporters and family whom have held our hands through this most difficult year of our lives. I’m so deeply grateful. And fortunate. I’ll never be able to repay your love and kindness, but I pray if you’re ever in need, you’ll call me FIRST. ❤️‍🩹
Annus horribilis.

UPDATE: Marius the EEO (Eurasian Eagle Owl). Is it just me or are we all in need of some really good news?? Well, here it is and it’s very good indeed. Today, for the first time since this lovely wee man arrived, he is flying!! He recovered at last, enough to get some height. Don’t get me wrong— he still is horrifically underweight and has a nematode crisis etc. But the most important turning point has been made and after he gets another pound of weight on, he’ll be moved to the outside mews for final recovery steps. At the moment he’s so painfully thin he simply hasn’t the bodily reserve to handle our off/on weather. He must remain protected from the elements. Already, with a bath, rest, meds and excellent foods, he’s proved he is willing to fight for his life. So are we! THANK YOU those of you who aided financially for his food and meds, every pound has been used and look at what it an accomplished! His life back. 🥳 ❤️‍🩹

One of the saddest intakes… CRITICAL CARE CASE: this little boy, “Marius” the Eurasian Eagle Owl came in today injured, clearly grounded for a long time, emaciated (beyond starving—keel measurement 1 out of possible 5) and weighing 30% of an acceptable body weight for this species. He’s also 50% smaller than typical EEO MALES (whom are smaller than females). We will keep you updated but this wee sprite has a LONG road to recovery.

PLEASE send good thoughts. Obviously a releasee or escapee, he is elderly and incredibly small for his breed. First we will try to save his life, then hopefully his original home (assuming it’s a safe one).

If unable to be returned then he’ll be Blue Highlands’ 7th EEO in residence. This is to say nothing of the 5 snowy owls and other birds including parrots and macaws, etc. THANK YOU Katrina, his finder, whose fast, unselfish action AND LONG TRANSPORT got him the emergency help he needs. Let’s hope it was fast enough.

These birds eat a massive amounts of food (varied diet) and need minerals and regular maintenance. Please consider supporting him and the other poor souls here whom had no where else to go. 😓❤️‍🩹

If you’re anything like me…
A. You didn’t realise it was Mother’s Day (because every day is) and
B. No one wished you one because either you’re a father or yours are too young to wish you one. Sooo… here’s to all the carers out there (because it just never ends! 🤣).

UPDATE: turned the crisis corner nicely! Eating and mock-flying! 😍

TODAY’S INTAKE: a rare one: FLEDGLING MYNA BIRD! Touch and go but starting to recover. ❤️‍🩹 VERY diverse, protein rich diet for these guys. No, they’re not indigenous. This is from our BHBR station in the Middle East where these beauties breed in the wild. This wee one was a dehydrated nest-fall. He’s finally hydrated and is eating😓 first emergency’s dealt with. Second worry? SCS! SINGLE CHICK SYNDROME (baby birds NEED that fight-for-life, nest jostling to keep them stimulated and alive! ) They need to compete with others for food, attention and warmth. Without this they tend to flag and perish, so, extra effort must be given for stimulation. Doubly so for intelligent species like these (almost a cross between a corvid and a psittacine).❤️‍🩹

Loving gentle reminder…. Baby bird season is well upon us. I’m managing doves, green-cheeked conure (parrotlets) and sparrows and we are barely started? 2 of these aren’t even here in Scotland! I’m having to provide feeding recipes, feeding instructions, schedule and techniques whilst they are 2000miles away! Please let mummies do their bit. If you aren’t sure if you should intervene—ring us! We will walk you through and help you to assess if intervention is right for the species, area, risks and the age of the young💕❤️‍🩹

HOW BLIND ARE HUMANS? Very. Most of us recognise various birds by sight. Sadly, we see nothing of their true splendour: Most birds see in ultra-violet. Would you like to see how they see one another? Puffins, myna birds, starlings, even “cryptic camouflage owls” are anything but to their fellow feathered friends! Come see the real world!

ANOTHER WILD RELEASE! (Minute 1:42) Poor Tawny “Pudding” has been in rehab for months now. Huge parasite load (nematode crisis) emaciated, broken wing, infections (2 courses antibiotics) and tonnes of food/flight time to build up body mass. FINALLY, fighting fit and ready to go back to home territory. Blinking a bit because she’s properly a nocturnal owl (as opposed to crepuscular or diurnal—daytime lovers like snowys). For this reason we released in dense woodland where she could quickly recede into the dark forest to finish napping before her normal “day” begins. Please support Blue Highlands… thousands have been rehabilitated and wild released just in the last 6 of our 35 years open. We cannot do it without you. 💕 To help us rescue, rehab and release Blue Highlands birds you can support our charitable work (SC050767) in any of the following ways;

Hello!

Welcome to Blue Highlands! We are so pleased you could join us in our efforts to help countless birds including raptors and threatened / endangered species. As well as 24/7 crisis care we work hard to rehabilitate and wild release every native bird that we can.

We are a safe haven for our feathered friends - abused and confiscated birds, those that need refuge or long term care, electrocution victims, those suffering after impact injuries, gun shot wounds, and those who topple or escape from nests or predators....we are here.

Birds also come to us from other welfare centres and organisations like the SSPCA, court cases, vets, zoos, and especially concerned members of the public. From Eurasian Eagle Owls to song birds, from Snowy Owls to rooks, we offer a forever home to the disabled, rehabilitation for the injured, and hope for the hurt.

Our work also includes genetically diverse breeding programmes which help ensure that species such as the rare Hyacinthine Macaw, Edwards Pheasants and the Crested Roul-Roul will be conserved for all of our grandchildren to see—even if they disappear entirely from the wild. Enjoy the education, and if you can do, join us in our efforts!
