Just a quick update: As many of you will have realised I have been quiet in recent months. I just wanted you all to know that I am still here and I am well, but I am going to have to postpone all photoshoots and bookings for the foreseeable future whilst I spend time with my family whilst we continue to go through a difficult time.

I was hoping I could keep things going but I just don't have the energy, availability or the time to be as productive, reliable, creative and consistent as I need to be, to run a business and to concentrate on creating amazing images for clients.

So I need to take a hiatus from the business side of things and especially from social media and be around for those who need me. As my family are down south I am clocking up the miles travelling a lot and yes I do have my camera with me so you may spot me out and about one end of the country or the other.

Thank you all for staying in touch and I am still here replying to messages but just maybe not so often for a while. Take care and I look forward to sunnier days to come.

And in case you're wondering who's looking after me, well that's Louise of course and these three. I often get asked what dogs we have, so here they all are. Somehow I managed to capture all three of their very different personalities in one image all at once. From L to R - Coco, Merlin and Gemma.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting up with Finn, who I photographed last year on Irvine Beach. This time I went to his patch, Rouken Glen park on the outskirts of Glasgow and we were treated to glorious weather and a stunning location.

It was great to see him again and to get some new images of him, extra special as he’ll be 10 next month. A double figure birthday is always to be celebrated.

Thank you to Audrey and Andrew for bringing him along, it was lovely to spend the morning with you all.

Harbour Seal, Culzean, 7th March 2024

07/03/2024

After three very busy days out, I felt like a day at home was in order but I also had to go to Culzean on business at some point and it had to be a low tide and today was the only day that worked and it was sunny. So I dragged myself out like a child not wanting to go to school and am I glad I made the effort.

Along with some stunning scenery and light, I was rewarded with close up views of the seals sunbathing whilst stood on an empty beach for over an hour all on my own. No one around at all, so peaceful.

Someone I used to know always used to say ‘Be bothered’ and so head out with your camera even if you don’t really feel like it. It’ll improve your day and you might just have an amazing experience like I did today.

Now to do some editing!

I often get asked what dogs we have, so here they are, Gemma (right) left tied to a lamppost on Hillingdon High Street and rehired to us by Battersea. Merlin in the centre was living on the street in Serbia and brought to this country in a terrible state. Coco on the left, also from Serbia was brought over but the new owners decided on the day of the pick up not to have him so we gave him a home.

They are all very different, Gemma has issues and is on the spectrum, likes routine and has to go to bed at 10.00pm every night. Merlin is very independent, a flight risk and only does what he wants to when he wants to do it. Coco is still a youngster and is finding his way but is terrified of traffic and some men.

All three are affectionate, like cuddles and people who approach with respect for their space. If we combined them they would the perfect dog, but who wants that.....?

Photoshoot with the dogs today got interrupted when Coco got bored and decided rather be playing. When Gemma asked to join in they ignored her so she ran back inside leaving the boys looking at me, wondering what they had done to upset her. Kids eh!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been thinking a lot about inspiration lately and one of things I do when struggling is to turn to my ever growing collection of books on dog photographs. Today I’ve been looking through some additions to my collection, this one full of Victorian and Edwardian portrait photos going back to 1850.

Photography using the collodian process which after years of experimentation, became standard was only invented in 1950 and the word ‘photography’ was only coined in 1939, just 11 years before.

So dogs have been photographed on their own and with families as a record of their existence since the very beginning of photography so it goes to show it’s not a new thing like some on the internet would lead you to believe.

No flashy cameras, no clever lenses, no photoshop, no lighting as we know it, using glass plates and chemicals with very long exposure times, meaning the subjects had to stay perfectly still for many minutes at a time. This is one of the reasons why portraiture became popular as moving subjects just couldn’t be captured at the time.

So although the images look simple the required skill, precision, knowledge (this would have seemed like magic when first shown) and a lot of patience.

Coco also seems to be enjoying them although I’m not sure he knows what he is looking at.

With the ongoing storms, wet weather and lack of light I’ve been spending January studying, trying out some new things and today I had to start cleaning my vinyl backdrops as I should have done it long time ago. Black side was not too bad but the white side…………… still covered in lots of doggy footprints.

Gemma turned up for a pose but was no help with the cleaning, let’s hope she’ll pose when I need her to.

I’ll be out and about over the next couple of weeks scouting some new locations so keep an eye out for me and come and say hello.

Today is our Gemma's 10yr Gotcha anniversary. From a scared little puppy we found at Battersea that had been tied up to a lamp-post in London and left to now. If your dog wishes to send her best wishes she'd love to see some pics posted in the comments below.

Currently she's fast asleep on the sofa but she'll soon be off to her agility class which she loves. She's all about routine so even though today is special we are trying not to mess it up.

Happy Gotcha Day!

January is well under way and it's always the month where us working photographers plan the year ahead after the busy run up to Christmas. I'm excited to be working on some new ideas and projects for this year and am still celebrating my 'Dog Photographer Of The Year' award.

Yesterday was such beautiful day I took my camera to the dog park to photograph my own dogs which is something I don't often get the opportunity to do, so this is Merlin enjoin the sun.

As for other news, well the use of AI that is creeping into everyday life (it's been with us for a while, it's just most didn't notice it) is shaking up the photographic industry and I see many photograhers panicking and worried about the future.

Yes, there's going to be changes but those that adapt and who are willing to change will book in the same way that happened when we went to digital and everyone could get good photos and then when every phone had a camera on it so everyone was able to take photos at any time.

In some ways, some things have never changed. Photography for me was never about taking pictures..............
