Thank you to the Upper Midwest Flat Coated Retriever Club for the opportunity to give a presentation on keeping your dog active. We covered massage, canine fitness and conditioning, and then did some hands on practice on how to warm your dog up prior to activity and then cooling your dog down afterwards. If you would like a presentation for your group you can contact me here on FB or at [email protected].

Borrowed from another trainer…

A reminder why we don't let young puppies jump in and out of cars, take long walks on hard surfaces, go jogging with us, or fly down long sets of steps (because inevitably they "wheeee jump" at the end). If a growth plate is damaged, the puppy will never grow properly. Damage a joint, and that's an issue for life. Puppies should only play at their own pace and speed on soft surfaces.
And remember, the bigger the dog, the longer they take to grow up. So for Labradors, we're looking at close to the upper numbers on all these growth plates

Thank you for your support in 2022. Wishing you all a healthy and Happy New Year!

Thor is looking longingly at the new snow fall and he so wants to run and play FOR A LONG TIME but his human says he has to take it easy.

I cannot help but give the annual reminder now that snow has arrived. Your canine buddies will want to romp in the snow (at least most of them). It will be up to YOU to be the responsible one. The deep snow is extra work for the body with each step and the new snow on top of the ice is slippery. Please consider limiting play to small increments and build on the time. Be aware of the slippery spots, especially for those who would like to fly out the door. This is a great time to practice impulse control! Shoveling paths for the little ones is a good idea. Protect those feet with ointment and/or booties as this type of snow can create snowballs in the pads quickly.

A bit of caution now will keep you in the game without injury for the rest of the season. Recovery of soft tissue injuries takes time and it is easier to avoid them. Feet which get cracked and sore due to cold and snow take a long time to recover.

Enjoy the winter wonderland!
