The idea behind this urban farm is to show that it is possible for anyone to grow food for their family and community. Most everything on this farm is repurposed materials and donated seeds. The idea was to produce enough for my family and neighborhood but also enough to make donations to the Tacoma Rescue Mission and local food banks Follow this link to find out how you can help too.

We caught the folks stealing from our garden on camera. They came prepared with flashlights and poked around our garden for over ten minutes last night.
They've taken over 200 lbs of food from our garden this month. A majority of it wasn't even ripe yet.

We're a little sad this morning to find that 2 of our squash were taken from our gardens. I know that we run the risk of this happening having gardens in our parkway, but it still makes us sad after watching our little squash babies grow every day to see the now empty spaces where they once lived. They weren't even ripe yet either :(

One of the tomato trellising methods we're trying out in our garden this year is the florida weave or basket weave method. It's used by small-scale farmers and commercial growers because it’s fast, simple to set up and maintain, and uses space efficiently during the growing season — as well as after the growing season when there’s so little material to store.

What is the Florida Weave?
With the Florida Weave, the idea is to “sandwich” your plants between lengths of twine. The twine gently holds up the plants without the need for additional stakes and clips.

Ideally, you start trellising tomato plants when they’re under 2 feet tall and easier to manage. Larger plants become unruly and difficult to weave around the branches. You also run the risk of driving stakes into the roots of more established plants. So, start early with this method.

We used t-bars, but you could easily use bamboo, rebar, etc. Keep in mind how tall your tomato plant will grow when choosing the height of your stakes. If you're growing a determinant variety then four to five foot stakes would work great. If you're growing an indeterminant variety then you really want stakes that are around six feet.

We used cotton twine because that's what we had laying around the house. But, you really want something that's less flexible like jute or h**p cord. Otherwise, you might have to restring if it starts to sag.

We'll keep y'all updated as the season progresses! Happy tomato growing and experimenting in the garden!

Chicken peeps! Please do not panic about the cold!! Chickens are tiny furnaces wrapped in down jackets; they are well equipped to regulate their body temperatures in cold weather!
Their NORMAL core body temp is TEN DEGREES HIGHER than ours! Provide them with a DRY, DRAFT-FREE living space and they will be FINE!
Please read these two important articles on my website to understand their needs & ensure you've done your part to support them in the cold WITHOUT dangerous heat lamps❗️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️❗️
