Back with Dave! Dave is doing amazingly, and tonight's training progressed to walking around the roads trying to find some other dog walkers. He walked beautifully the whole way and was engaged for "Touch" too!
Well done, David! 👏

Natural dog treats 🐰

Rum had his first natural treat today, a rabbit ear. A great natural de wormer, boredom breaker, and way to tire him out. He's now soundly asleep.

It's important to supervise with these sorts of treats, especially puppies 🐶

Let's talk crates

Are they worth it? Should you crate train your dog?

Like everything, crates have pros and cons, it really depends on your situation and if you think it would work for you and your dog.

Positives of crates:

✅️ Allows your puppy or dog to have 'down time' and to be regulated
✅️ Stops puppies or dogs from getting into mischief
✅️ If they go to the vets or groomers, they are likely to be put in a crate
✅️ Travel - dogs are crated on planes, dog walkers' vans, or your own car
✅️ If you are on holiday and you need somewhere to keep your dog
✅️ A secure space for your dog - this is your dog's space where they can fully relax without disturbance
✅️ Health and safety - if there was a fire, you and the fire crew would know where your dog is

Some negatives of crates:

❌️ Cost of crates - especially for bigger dogs
❌️ Space - the crate will take up room depending on the size
❌️ Aesthetic - some aren't the prettiest to look at
❌️ Travel - another thing to pack when travelling

I personally think all dogs should be crate trained - even if they don't sleep in one or have it up all the time. You never know when they will need to be crated.

Puppies are an excellent example of when a crate should be used. They cannot regulate themselves but need 18-20 hours of sleep a day - so the crate means it's time to sleep. A tired puppy is not in the head space to learn, and is often bitey.
The crate also keeps them from learning behaviours we don't want them to.

Second training session with Dave today, he did amazingly! And so did his owner - you can see all of the hard work they've put in the past few weeks. We practised "Touch" and "middle" but making it more difficult with more distractions.
A big win for Dave - a neighbour's dog was barking, and he didn't bat an eye, he kept his focus on his owner and carried on with what he was doing! Incredible progress from the last session.

⭐️ Well done, Dave!

This is the one and only Mr Justin Timberlake. He is an Akita cross who is available for adoption from ! He's still young, very sweet, and walks beautifully on a lead. Unfortunately, he's still looking for a home - along with many other dogs at the rescue!

When is training actually needed?

All dog owners think they have the perfect dog - and we all do - but it's important to understand that every dog has their weaknesses. It's important that we understand and learn what our dogs struggle with in order to help them through those situations and teach them better ways of dealing with it.

For me, I know that Roux struggles with being near Chickens or birds. He also likes to carry shoes and socks wherever he finds them around the house.

So when do we train? Do we need to train?

With dogs displaying behaviours we dont necessarily want, a lot of it isn't a training issue - instead, management is needed. When a dog does a behaviour we don't want, they are doing it because they enjoy it, and that in itself is rewarding for them - so they will continue to do it. We need to manage the environment so that the behaviour cannot be expressed meaning they cannot self reward from it. Then we teach better ways of dealing with those situations and offer alternative outlets for the behaviour.

Because I know Roux cannot cope with Chickens, I manage this by always keeping him on a lead when we are in proximity to them, and try to avoid areas I know have Chickens. I know Roux likes to carry shoes and socks, so if I want to stop this behaviour I need to manage the environment and only have shoes or socks where he cannot access - I'm not allowing him to practise the self rewarding behaviour.

Management is important - we need to prevent our dogs from doing self rewarding behaviours, and then teach alternative behaviours. We cannot stop a behaviour if it is still being rewarded.

Snuffle Mats:
✅️ Great for enrichment
✅️ Fun and cheap to make
✅️ Mentally tiring for dogs
✅️ Sniffing is a calming behaviour
✅️ Puts nose and brain to work

Snuffle mats are great - Just sprinkle your dog's kibble or treats over and let them rummage and sniff to find them! 20 minutes of sniffing is the equivalent of an hours walk - and all you have to do is sprinkle some food and let your dog do the work.

We made these from a rubber doormat from b&q and some leftover fabrics we had - in total cost about £3! But they're available in most pet shops too.

They're good for relaxing or calming your dog - Roux fell asleep immediately after

The usefulness of chew toys:

Roux absolutely loves his chew toys, and we always have some to hand! They're brilliant for enrichment, and he happily takes himself off to chew them by himself. They're durable and come in so many shapes, sizes, and flavours - perfect for all dogs!

Chewing can become a problem behaviour if there's no appropriate outlet for it, its important to give them something you want them to chew so they don't pick for themselves!

Natural chews are excellent too - hooves, yak chews, and raw bones are all good choices.

Letting our dogs be dogs through enrichment

We often look at our dogs with high expectations of behaviour and want them to act perfectly at all times. It's just not possible. Our dogs are not robots, and we sometimes forget they're living beings with thoughts, emotions, and choices.

We need to remember that we as a species have taken their species out of their natural environment and now want them to coexist perfectly in ours... but dogs still have those inherent behaviours we now deem as 'problem behaviours'.

Digging, chewing, chasing, retrieving (or stealing items) are all behaviours naturally expressed, but unless we give them an opportunity to do these things, they will start finding their own way of doing it.

They'll start digging the garden, or chewing furniture, stealing clothes or household items, or other behaviours we don't necessarily want in certain places.

To prevent this, we need to use enrichment - take your dogs to places they can dig, encourage it, and put it on cue if you'd like, give your dog lots of healthy things to chew on, encourage chewing in a way you'd like it to be expressed.

Enrichment is essential for our dogs' lives - in fact, a lot of the time, training isn't the answer, ensuring the dogs are enriched and have an outlet for inherent behaviour prevent those problems from forming.

If you'd like any enrichment ideas, get in touch!

Registering your dog at the vets is so important because:
✅️ they need anual vaccinations
✅️ they need anual health checks (especially younger or older dogs)
✅️ they need to be microchipped
✅️ they need regular flea and worming treatments
✅️ If ever there's an emergency then you have a vet on hand immediately
✅️ it gives you peace of mind

Should anything go wrong with your dog, we want to get them checked out as soon as possible - don't wait to register, its so quick and easy!

Your dog can be registered at multiple vets too - which is especially useful if you travel to regular locations - you don't want to be caught off guard.

A lot of vets offer health plans too which can be excellent. Usually meaning any flea or worming treatment is paid for, a yearly health check is paid for, and discounts on consultations - it speads the cost and takes the stress away.

The introduction post - Hi, my name is Jess and this is my Working line cocker Roux. I've had Roux for about 18 months now, he's my first dog but my family have had dogs ranging from English bulldogs to Alaskan malamutes. I'm working towards being DTC Certified but in the mean time I'm fully insured (Including dogs on the dangerous dog act!) and will slowly start taking on clients! I hope to eventually start doing puppy classes and 1:1s - if you've got any questions get in touch!
