Saturday was TRANSPORT DAY!

Five of our dogs left here to head up north to join their new families.

Krystal was rescued from Greenville County Animal Care by her foster Jillian Woolridge, who fostered her since May. You may recall her new mom and dad then volunteered to drive not only to pick her up, but 17 other dogs to help get them to their new families. What heroes ❤️!

Poppy was rescued after being found as a stray with a horrible case of mange, and taken under the wing of Pam Sawicki and Maddie Trelinski. She blossomed into a beautiful, confident and very loving girl. Pam and Maddie also fostered her since May.

Junie was saved on the same day as Poppy in May. You will remember her as one of the most terrified puppies we have ever had. She was shaking uncontrollably in her kennel at Orangeburg County Animal Control and Shelter. She was fostered by Andrea and David, with frequent visits with Pam and Maddie, and assisted by A Dog's Day Out Inc.. With the help of Andrea, David, Pam, Maddie and all the girls at Dog’s Day Out Inc., Junie blossomed into a beautiful and sweet pup who when she left here felt lot more comfortable with people, but she had absolutely undeniable love for all dogs she encountered.

Wilbur was rescued by us in June after we were contacted by Izzy's Pond, a wildlife rescue. Wilbur was found by one of their volunteers in May, starved and with a horrible case of mange. They took care of him, had him neutered, vaccinated and when they reached out to us for help, of course we said yes. Wilbur became one happy, bouncy and clumsy boy, who loved his best friend Junie. And luckily they were able to travel up north together.

Lilith was rescued from Rutherford County Animal Shelter in August and she was named after a very special little girl. She was a hoot and a social butterfly, and loved by everyone she encountered.

All are doing very well, and we couldn’t be happier for them!

Thank you to all that help us help all of these deserving pups. We greatly appreciate you all!

Sweet little Pixie came to us over four months ago from one of our local shelters. She had a bad cherry eye that would need repair, but we thought nothing of it.

When Pixie went for her surgical consultation, it was discovered that she had zero tear production in that eye. The odds of a successful surgery were slim to none, so we started treating the eye in an attempt to improve that.

When Pixie went back for a recheck, her tear production was up to 5%, but now her right eye also had a cherry eye and similar low to non-existent tear production. We left to treat for another month.

On her third recheck, it was decided that we should move forward with her surgery and that her tear production, although low, was as good as it was going to get.

She finally had her surgery last week to repair her cherry eyes. Now we cross our fingers and pray it holds. Cherry eyes typically look worse right after surgery so no after photo just yet.

Pixie also suffers from dry eye and will need drops in her eyes forever. Our hope is that we can save her eyesight for as long as possible. She is such a s***ky, vibrant girl, and her eyes have been painful for a long time.

Thank you to everyone who supports us with your generous donations. They allow us to help dogs like Pixie!

On August 3rd we received a message from a Good Samaritan, Felicia, and this is what it said: “Hello, another dog has shown up. Lauren’s, SC. Any help would be appreciated.”

You may remember Felicia as the person who saved Mario, whom she discovered covered in mange on her property in December, 2023. Felicia kept Mario in her care until we were able to rescue him. And as you know Mario has since found an amazing home and serves as a mascot on his brother Keagan’s baseball team.

So when Felicia reached out to us in early August, we knew she would do whatever she could until we were able to rescue the newly found pup. And then another message came shortly after the first: “…and the story continues”.

When Felicia found the male puppy, she placed it on her porch. Shortly thereafter Felicia’s father in law was plowing another property about a mile away, when he saw a grey puppy. His first thought was that Felicia didn’t properly secure the male puppy on her property. Felicia confirmed the puppy was still on her porch, and went up to the other property with food, called out and two more dogs - mom and a female puppy came out from under an old house.

As a rescue, we always play catch up. We are most often over capacity and when one space opens up, it’s already been pre-filled way in advance. It was hard enough to find space for one dog, let alone 3 larger dogs.

Felicia and her husband without hesitation said they would keep all of them safe until we could find fosters and rescue them. They went to buy an outdoor kennel that day, added two dog houses, and they kept the pups safe and fed for three weeks until we could pick them up today!

Thank you Felicia and hubby for saving yet more lives! Thank you Pam Sawicki and Maddie Trelinski for fostering Scout! And Jackie Teague for fostering mama and her baby girl Sissy! It takes a village to save dogs and this village absolutely rocked it! Great job everyone!

Yesterday was TRANSPORT DAY!

This video is significant in that one of our newly adopted dog’s parents drove down to pick her up, along with 16 other dogs, when they found out there were not enough volunteers to make the transport happen.

They started out driving on Friday evening and will not be home until this afternoon.

Not only did they adopt Krystal, but they made dreams come true for 16 other dogs!

Thank you DeeAnn and Herb, and happy life sweet Krystal!

Krystal came from Greenville County Animal Care and was fostered by Jillian Woolridge since May! Thank you Jillian for fostering Krystal and helping to make her forever come true ❤️!

Trapped Burns and Sarah, her Good Samaritan were reunited yesterday!

While Burns was on the run as a stray for four months in downtown Greenville, SC, Sarah fed her every day, twice a day, once she became aware of her.

Although Burns would let Sarah pet her and touch her while she was a stray, she would not allow Sarah or anyone else to leash her or bring her to safety.

We trapped Burns 2.5 months ago, and during that time she was fostered by Judy and her granddaughter Cali. Burns made amazing progress.

Watch this huge transformation of once scared stray dog who wouldn’t allow many people to come close to her!

We sure hope this is a match made in heaven! Sarah plans to foster Burns with the intent to adopt her, provided that Burns is happy living in the city.

Based on yesterday’s reunion, we have no doubt that Sarah and Burns have many more beautiful memory making moments in store for them!

BURNS was reunited with her Good Samaritan yesterday - video to come this afternoon!

BURNS trapping recap from June 15th - This is the raw emotion on a face of a Good Samaritan after the trapping of a dog that she befriended, fed and loved for months.

Sarah encountered a stray dog off of Poinsett Highway in early February. When Sarah first encountered the big fluffy dog, the dog was trying to cross a busy road. The dog was very skittish and would run away when any human tried to approach her. So Sarah started feeding her every day, twice to three times a day, to the point where this dog felt comfortable to approach not only her, but select few strangers. She was however not comfortable to be caught or leashed. Sarah has been feeding the dog, she lovingly called Burns, regularly now for four months.

We found out about this stray in need earlier this week and met her yesterday. This afternoon, Holly and Andrea set a trap, with Sarah helping them, and they successfully trapped Burns/Burnsey few hours later.

Huge thanks go to Susan Turner, one of our fosters who brought this dog’s plight to our attention, and Tommy Burns with Burns Automotive; who allowed the dog to be safe and protected, watered and fed for the past four months on his property. It truly takes a village!

Yesterday Sarah reunited with Burns after almost 2.5 months apart, and you won’t believe the incredible turn around in Burns. We will post a video later today.

Thank you Judy and Cali for fostering Burns and making her realize that most humans are good people and that it’s ok to receive and give love!

If you look carefully at this photo, you will notice the date August 31, 2019. You will also notice the words RESCUED.

This little guy found himself at one of our local shelters five YEARS ago with very little hope of making it out. He was a senior owner surrender who was blind.

One of our longtime volunteers, Laurie Smith, saw him before we did. She inquired about being a hospice foster for him. Given his age and health problems, we didn’t think he would be very adoptable, so we were excited to have this opportunity for him, and pulled him from the shelter.

He went to Laurie immediately and the first thing she said was, “Given his obvious weaknesses, he needs a strong name. I am going to call him Titan.”

Titan proved true to his name and was a giant of a dog. With Laurie‘s nurturing, he settled in and found tremendous solitude in peacefully existing—and existing—and existing some more. It must’ve been so comforting for him to have his needs met for probably the first time in his life. He asked for very little and in turn, taught us much about growing old gracefully and living with a disability.

We said goodbye to Titan yesterday. He peacefully slipped away with Laurie by his side after five blessed years in what was technically a foster home, but there was no doubt Laurie considered Titan one of hers.

RIP Titan Smith💜

Sweet Laney update 😢 - the news we received today after her ultrasound was not good, but not entirely unexpected. She has stomach cancer. She has been placed on prednisone and we will take each day as it comes.

After her vet visit, we stopped for ice cream, and when she got home, she ate some of the current food that she has been able and willing to eat. It’s a medley of veggies and chicken in a pumpkin soup. We then add special broth made specifically for dogs called Bowser Beer for Dogs. Finally, we sprinkle it with goat milk powder. Laney has been really liking this mixture for the past few days. And she LOVES to eat cottage cheese, yogurt and American cheese.

Unfortunately, with her digestive issues we struggle to get her to eat every day. We looked at her chart today, and when we first rescued her on June 6th, she weighed 11 pounds, and today she weighed in at 8.2 pounds. We try to offer her food often, but eating is based on Laney’s mood and willingness to eat.

Despite her diagnosis, she is still so super sweet. She wags her tail when she sees her doggie friends and her foster parents. She likes to be held and cuddled ,and she sleeps a lot. When she is feeling energetic she also likes to run after a tennis ball and is a master at fetch.

So although we may not be able to give her a long life with her very own family, we are thankful that we have been able to bring her to safety and give her the medical care she needed. We are thankful that she was found by the Good Samaritan and that she made her way to us.

We will take each day as it comes and we promise you Laney that you will be loved and well taken care of until you are ready to say goodbye to this world!

We created a wishlist for Laney of her currently favorite foods. There are only a few items on it - the food that she currently enjoys eating, and a warmer vest. The more weight she loses the harder it will be for her to stay warm.

Four weeks ago we rescued this cutie from one of our local shelters. His name Bacon suits him well, as he is a little ham with everyone wherever he goes.

This is how the shelter described him: “Introducing Bacon, affectionately nicknamed "baby hippo" or "piggy" for his adorable charm. His infectious smile stretches from ear to ear, and his excitement is contagious-his whole body wiggles with joy. Bacon is a social butterfly who loves meeting new people and saying hello. Energetic and playful outdoors, he's the perfect companion for active adventures. Inside, he's cute, affectionate, and always ready for playtime or cuddles.”

He is definitely all that and a bag of chips. We took him to see Dr. Randall yesterday to look at his wonky gait and he charmed his way into everyone’s heart at Foothills Veterinary Hospital.

This video was taken by Jessica Charles when she took Bacon on a doggie day out. Thank you Jessica for this great video and for taking this big boy out for some cuddles and treats ❤️!

On July 3rd, 2021, we rescued a dog that was left to die in a boarded up, abandoned building, with no food or water.

He was covered in fleas, he had open bloody wounds, insect bites all over his body, toenails curled into his pads, he was skeletal, and he had no hair. We named him Tobias, which means God is Good. We felt that he was sent to us by Sully, one of our dogs who passed away during his dental surgery around that same time.

It’s been three years since he was adopted, renamed Fozzie, and he is becoming one famous little dude. He loves to sing to opera and this morning he made it on the news in Hamilton, Ontario.

We hope you enjoy this video as much as we did!

Photos of Tobias/Fozzie from when we first rescued him in July 2021 will be in the comments.

Thank you Adrienne for adopting this sweet boy and for sending us this video!

LEXI - You all remember the little puppy we rescued last week, that was dumped in a duffel bag on the side of the road with her mom? She then watched her mom get hit and run over by a car in front of her?

Well she is the sweetest and fiercest little munchkin. She is very brave and independent, yet she loves being around people and she loves to be held and carried.

We got you now baby girl!

No more pain and sadness for you!

SUGAR LOVES going for rides!

Today we took her to get officially kid tested. Three year old Jayce was a trooper, as Sugar was at times so excited she almost knocked hm down. But she loved all the attention from all the people today, riding in the car is her favorite, and the outing would not be complete without a juicy cheeseburger.

All in all, Sugar had a fantabulous day! She is one strong warrior and overcomer of a dog!

We are so proud of you big girl!

TOOTSIE update:

You may remember that Tootsie’s mom Norene passed away in late June. She adopted Tootsie from us 4.5 years ago, when her beloved dog passed away. Norene needed a very special dog at that time. You see Norene had suffered a stroke and even though she was living semi-independently at the time, the right side of her body was paralyzed. She needed a small dog that was house-trained, obedient, and one who would be content to spend their days sitting in her lap and sleeping by her side.

We did a meet and greet with three dogs and as Norene would tell you every time you saw her after that day, Tootsie chose her. When Norene‘s health declined sharply a few weeks before her passing, this amazing little dog never left her side. She was the most loyal companion. She was everything Norene needed her to be.

After Norene passed we took Tootsie into our care and she went into a foster home with Joey Avellino. Joey works with seniors at senior and assisted living centers. She sometimes takes Tootsie with her. When the residents see Tootsie, they can’t help but smile. Everyone absolutely loves and adores her. Tootsie has her own wardrobe and is being spoiled rotten every second of every day.

We are pretty sure that Norene is smiling down seeing how her little one is being loved and cared for just like when she was with her mama ❤️.

And the most photogenic dog of yesterday’s transport was Miss Amelia ❤️!

Amelia was named after the pilot Amelia Earhart. Can you guess why? Not only because of the obvious, but also because she is able to clear 2.5 foot baby gates 😊.

Poor baby was only two months old when she was found as a stray, covered in fly bites, and her body covered by a thick coat made of fleas. But she did not let all that neglect affect her sunny disposition. She was a star at yesterday’s transport!

We are pretty sure her new family will fall in love with her at first sight.

Thank you Jessica Collins-Balson and Josh for fostering her and getting her ready for her forever!

How much crueler can this world get for these animals? She is just a baby.

We named her Lexi, after Andrea’s son who was hit and killed while riding his bicycle to the gym, exactly four weeks ago to the day.

Welcome little one!

14/08/2024

We picked up these two beautiful teenage puppies yesterday evening in Pickens County, South Carolina. We were contacted by a woman who lives off the main road out in the country in a frequent dumping ground for dogs. These two had showed up pitiful and skinny and of course, the first thing she did was offer them food and water. The following day she called animal control, and to her surprise they told her that since she had fed them, they were now hers. The best they could offer was to euthanize them for $50 each if she brought them in.

At that point, the kind woman started looking for another avenue of help. When she reached out to us, we told her if she was willing to continue fostering while they got fully vetted, we could most certainly help. She has kept them fed and loved for a month and she will continue to keep them when they return from being spayed on Thursday. Did we mention she is older and her husband is disabled?

Folks, wake up! If you are a tax paying citizen, then you are funding your local shelter. We urge you to find out what their policy is on stray animals as well as owner surrenders. If your shelter has policies which do not support their citizens and ones which also promote the suffering and endangerment of stray animals, then something needs to change. How is this what we’ve become? Are we now punishing humanity?

Let’s very quickly realize three things. First and foremost, this is not the animal’s fault. Secondly, it is also not the fault of the person whose path has been crossed by this animal and is trying to help. Thirdly, the inordinate number of stray animals that plagues all of our southern communities did not happen overnight. Lack of legislation promoting animal welfare has perpetuated this into what we are dealing with each and every day.

Our hearts break saying no over and over. We know shelter staff does not enjoy opening the floodgates of their shelters to have animals pour in. We have to go after the root cause. It will not be fixed quickly, but if we do not attack the root cause and educate our communities about what is happening, nothing is going to change. It’s hard to imagine things could get worse, but that’s exactly what we have seen happen over the last four years.

We MUST do better!

Wallace has had a rough start to his little life. He was picked up as an eight week old stray with a severe injury to his right eye resulting in its removal.

We affectionately call him one-eyed Wallace and he sees the world just as brightly as any other pup. He is full of curiosity and s***k, and doesn’t know he’s any different.

Again, Wallace was one of the lucky ones. He was lucky to have been picked up by animal control and lucky to have received timely medical care for his injury. One eyed and lucky…go figure.

These two were understandably a little uncertain as they got dropped off for heartworm treatment yesterday. They will receive the second of two injections today and then be on their way to healing.

Boss is a 7 pound chihuahua and Max is a 20 pound terrier. They definitely are not your usual suspects. Just goes to show no dog is immune from heartworm disease.

The teeny weenies and the scruffies are just as susceptible if they are not on monthly heartworm prevention. Heartworm treatment is painful and expensive. If left untreated, it will kill your dog. These guys are lucky. They were fortunate enough to fall into the right hands before that happened.

If you have questions about getting your dog on heartworm preventive, please reach out and we will help point you in the right direction!
