Supervision -- applies to any situation that is difficult for your dog!

What are the 5 types of supervision? 🤔We believe that only Only two types, active and proactive, truly set your dogs and young children up for success. Active and proactive supervision are essential in building safer bonds together.

What can you do at night while sleeping? This is "absent supervision." The best thing for this is to be sure your family dog is secure in a success station, like a crate, or gate (one the dog will not be able to figure a way out of), or secure tether.

It always helps to prepare with your dog and practice for months with success stations before they are needed. Trust us!! You will thank us later!!!

Do behavior tests for temperament in shelters predict success in a home? Hint: It's complicated. But there are many reasons why they do not!

A new paper addresses why shelter behavior evaluations for dogs aren't always trustworthy.

There are many compelling reasons NOT to use a shock collar in dog training. This study refutes the argument that shock collars produce a more reliable response. Shock collars -- not needed, and not kind.

We assessed the efficacy of dog training with and without remote electronic collars compared to training with positive reinforcement. A total of 63 dogs with known off-lead behavioral problems such as poor recall were allocated to one of three training groups (each n = 21), receiving up to 150 min o...

Undetected pain is a welfare concern for our pets. Subtle pain can be hard to diagnose (if only they could talk!) and be a direct cause of behavior concerns from aggression, to noise sensitivities to signs of generalized anxiety. In some cases a pain medication trial can illuminate the problem. Talk to your veterinarian if you have concerns!

Let's make sure our expectations for our dogs are fair. And that we honor the 'who' of each one. My mom taught us 'Everyone is just someone trying to get along'. I say, 'Even dogs!'. We do well to remember this when we think our dog is misbehaving; there is a reason for the behavior that makes sense to them. We need to understand that reason and control the environment to soften its edges, to help our dog see a challenging situation differently -- to feel safe. We need to make sure the we ourselves are not getting in the way. This approach respects the whole of the ones who give us so much. You cannot build a trust relationship through force or corrections.
