Use Common Sense & Care When Mowing

Most of us have started mowing now, here in Texas. Please remember that Box Turtles are out of Brumation and moving around seeking to mate, eat and find suitable habitat. In addition, many babies are just coming out as well. Want to help protect them? Here are two simple ways we can all help.

It goes without saying but we are saying it anyway, don’t spray pesticides or herbicides. You will kill the turtles and their food.

If you have lawn, check the lawn before you mow! Many box turtles are killed or injured due to being hit by lawnmower blades. It’s very common and often seen in wildlife rehab centers.

Remember, box turtles are small and short! You might not see them in the grass, pine straw , leaves or under a shrub. If possible, just move them a few feet away or place them in another area until you have mowed and then return them.

Thanks-🐢

Protecting the Box Turtle in the East Texas region of our great state, means protecting and preserving our forests and trees.

Forests are the lungs of the earth: essential for environmental stability and human health and happiness. These magnificent and ancient ecosystems are home to 50 percent of all terrestrial species on Earth. And yet, forests are under siege.

Forests and trees—especially big trees and mature forests—have many benefits. They provide habitat for a multitude of species, store carbon, maintain water quality, stabilize the climate, and provide places for people to recreate and connect with nature. Encourage your local government to conserve forests, create parks, and oppose destructive suburban sprawl and other developments. Volunteer with a local land trust or parks and recreation department, or consider a conservation easement if you own forested land. Other ideas include:

🐢Conserve trees and forests in your area.
🐢Plant trees—the more the better.
🐢Support forest conservation organizations.
🐢Learn about forests, both local and global.
🐢Advocate for law changes and positive solutions to help forests.
🐢Visit forests often. Leave them as you found them.
🐢Teach kids about forests through books and outdoor exploration.
🐢Share your love of forests with others.
🐢 Leave the animals in the forest.

Please leave Box Turtles in the wild unless injured. They have earned the right to be free. Thank you.🐢

Perhaps you now possess one but no longer want or can’t care for it? If you can’t return it to the spot where it was found…and you need a rescue, FB message us.

Have you ever wondered why these amazing animals are called, “Box” turtles?

They are the only turtle in the world, if healthy, that can completely draw into their shell because of their hinge. By closing up inside, they are able to form a “box” that is tight and secure. 😊🐢

Reminder…Stay Alert and help Box Turtles…

Here in Central Texas, beginning in March and April, box turtles emerge from brumation (a hibernation-like state) to look for food and a mate. They are energetic and travel quite a ways in their search.

As box turtles become more active, many will find themselves in the path of one of their biggest threats…cars. If you find a box turtle on the road, you can help by picking them up and moving them across the road in the direction they were facing. (Assuming it is safe for you to do so)Don't worry if there isn't a pond nearby - box turtles are terrestrial, meaning they live on land in forests and fields!

Thank you! 🐢

Welcome to my new page! Thank you for visiting and sharing my posts and page.

This page exists to advocate for the protection, care, education and conservation of the North American Box Turtle. In addition to this overarching purpose, we are a non-profit rescue, refuge and sanctuary for a very limited number of Box Turtles needing rescued for such reasons as:

🐢 They are currently pets, but the owner for various reasons cannot or do not desire to continue caring for them. (BTW, we never encourage taking Box Turtles from the wild unless injured)
🐢 They have been injured and need a safe place to live out their life.
🐢 They have been found in the wild and taken home for whatever reason and cannot be returned to the area they were found.
🐢 They were given to someone who now doesn’t want them and cannot return them to the place where they were taken from.

Please note:
✅ We only consider North American Box Turtles with preferences for The Three Toed Box Turtle and the Ornate Box Turtle, native to East and Central Texas. (Other Box Turtle species may be considered as well…eastern, gulf coast, etc. But due to limited area, only Box Turtles.)
✅ We reserve the right to decline any potential client or turtle.
✅ In order to protect our turtles from poachers, the illegal turtle trade and other abuses, our location is kept secret.

Interested or know of someone interested or a Box Turtle in need? Message me via FB. I will share other information from that point only. 😊
