Don't forget the Christmas party next Sunday, 15th December. This will also be the last session before Christmas. The Club will reopen on Sunday 5th January 2025 when I'm sure you will be itching to get back to work with your dogs!

I know it's a bit early but Christmas is coming! The usual Christmas Party will be on Sunday 15th December after a short training session. Usual fancy dress and buffet will take place. Please bring something for the table (Karen will ensure that not everyone brings mince pies!) The party will be the last session before Christmas.
Training will resume on 5th January 2025. I'm sure you will all be itching to get back!!

I will remind you of the dates nearer the time.

A lovely day for mid-November.
We tried a new socialisation technique at the Club yesterday. This is a technique used at German clubs and forms part of all SchH/IPO qualifications. It's quite simple, just get a group of people to wander about fairly close together and get the dog to walk between them a number of times. This can be done either on or off lead depending on the dog.
Pictured is Rusty who is walking through the crowd. Rusty's owner and handler, Fred, is standing on the right with the lead in his hand.
Well done to all the dogs who attempted this exercise. You all did very well!

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Erika Markus, our President, passed away in the early hours of Monday morning after a long illness. Erika is shown in happier days on the banner at the top of our page. There are no details of the arrangements at this time.
To older members the chair at the table where money is collected will always be Erika's chair and there will be fond memories of her sitting in it!

A quick picture of Sundays training session before the rain came (affects my camera, the training continues in all weathers!).

Bottom; Karen with young Harry doing the "Puppy recall". Harry has a short attention span at his age but will soon catch up with the big dogs!

I've just seen this message from the examiner for Karen and Tim's qualification. Outstanding!!

Jessica Dunsdon
I had the incredible honor of judging the BIPDT - British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers residential courses at Harper Adams University College this week. It was truly inspiring to witness so many naturally talented individuals learning and applying new skills.
A huge well done to everyone involved! 🎉 I hope to see many of you again next year.
Keep shining! ✨

It is with great pride that we announce that our two trainers, Karen and Tim Crout attended Harper Adams University in Shropshire and qualified as Dog Training Instructors in the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers. This ensures that we have excellent, up to date training and offer more variety in the class.
We now have the capacity to offer some one to one training when required at the same time that the normal class is taking place.

Twelve months have passed again (where does the time go?) and as a Kennel Club affiliated Club we are required to hold our AGM and submit our annual returns. This is our official notice as no-one I know still reads the dog press! The AGM will be on Sunday 21st July after training. It only takes a short time and all paid-up members are encouraged to attend. The usual "sweetener" will apply as a barbecue will be held afterwards. Please bring your own choice of meat (or meat substitute) to burn on the charcoal!

It stopped raining for a few minutes yesterday while we dedicated this baby oak tree to our late friends Tony Trant and Terry Welch who were the backbone of the GSD Club of Devon. The tree is just inside the gate to our training ground so they can watch over the dogs they loved so much.
We had a good turnout on the day and when the rain returned we had tea and cakes in the clubhouse! I'm sure Tony and Terry would have approved!

21/03/2024

To commemorate the lives our late Chairman, Tony Trant and our recent loss Terry Welch we have decided to plant an oak tree on the training ground in their memory. The dedication ceremony will take place on Sunday 7th April 2024 at 3.30pm.
All members, past members and anyone who knew them are welcome to attend this short ceremony in their honour.

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Terry Welch after a long illness. Terry passed away in the early hours of Sunday 4th February 2024.
Terry had been a member of the Club for over 30 years, the Club Treasurer and as some will probably remember, the obedience trainer with a unique style. Terry was also the Obedience Chief Steward for all the Club shows for a number of years. Lastly, as the picture shows, he could "burn a sausage" at our barbecues like no-one else.
Terry was one of a kind, the GSD Club of Devon was his whole life and those of us that knew him will miss him very much. R I P Terry. xx

German Shepherd Dog Club of Devon

First formed in 1960, the GSD Club of Devon started life in Plymouth and had several homes until it settled in Southway. When the grass area next to the church hall was sold for building Tony Trant, the chairman, offered one of his fields in Hennock for ringcraft training and as a second obedience training area. In 2004 Tony passed away and the club was fortunate to be in a position to purchase the six acre field. Attendance at Plymouth fell away over the following years and the hire of the hall was no longer viable. Training ceased in 2007, the first time in 47 years that the club did not have a presence in Plymouth. Hennock has become the HQ of the club with ample room for ringcraft, obedience and fun agility. There is also ample room to hold two open shows each year including parking for about 100 cars.

The club is registered at the Kennel Club and is also a member of the German Shepherd Dog Breed Council to get a say in all things to do with the breed.

The Club is open to anyone with a pure-bred German Shepherd Dog (it does not have to have a pedigree so rescued dogs are welcome). It is currently the only single breed club for German Shepherds in the South-West.
