I passed Lady’s screening! Lady and I are now BFFs and boy oh boy did she have a blast at her visit today. Can’t wait to host this fun, sweet girl in a couple months!

Meet Tyler! Tyler had his initial behavior consultation a couple weeks ago, and yesterday was his first follow-up training session. We’re working on some very challenging behaviors at home. This kind of training will take time, but his humans are dedicated to helping him through it. Great work so far, Team Tyler!

Nine-month-old Milo is here to remind you that doggie adolescence isn't all just fun and games. It can be ruff. He's still an adorable little Ewok, of course, but Milo is also in the throes of doggie adolescence. If he could slam a door in my face and shout "you're so unfair!", I bet he would. If he had a playlist, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" would be blasted on repeat.
An adolescent dog has very different needs than a puppy or a socially-mature adult. Adolescents often need much more exercise and enrichment, less sleep, continuing training to face life's distractions, and maybe new training to help with new Very Big Feelings. But, the thing adolescents need the most, above everything else, is patience and understanding. I get you, Milo. I get your barking, your whining, your restlessness, your attention span, your reverse recall 😂, your hormones, and your Very Big Feelings. In other words, your absolutely normal adolescent antics.

A wonderful summary from Zazie Todd, PhD over at Companion Animal Psychology about new research updating guidelines for recommended spay/neuter ages. Five new breeds have been added, bringing the list to 40 breeds now.
"The data shows that risks can be specific to certain breeds, and that in some cases there may be a need to balance the relative risks of different issues. In other words, it’s complicated."
The full research paper is cited and linked in this blog article. Great info to read ahead of discussing with your vet what is appropriate for your dog and specific situation.

New research adds more dog breeds to the list of those for which there are guidelines on when to spay or neuter them based on the health risks, bringing the list up to 40 (and there are guidelines on mixed breeds by weight, too). Fourth of July is right around the corner, which means the dreaded sky booms are coming. 🎆 Fireworks season can be such a tough time for many dogs. As for puppies discovering new sounds for the first time, fear prevention from the get go is critical.

Today is my Sadie’s forever birthday. Usually, I take the day off to go to Sadie places and do Sadie things. But this year, I am honoring my original KinDog by welcoming Argos for his first day with me. Argos is sweet, anxious boy who is here for a 3-day trial stay. Some dogs need a bit extra prep and care before staying with me for a longer period while their humans travel. Argos is one of those dogs. We’re having a productive Day 1 so far and are celebrating with some ear scratches on the couch while we honor Sadie together. Sadie is the reason for everything.
