Please share your special NAID experience! This is a "share from Elmo and Dusty's owner in 2014.
I wanted to share an awesome story about Dusty that happened last night. He is my brothers dog and they were both at our parents house last night around dusk. My mom happened to see Dusty run past the front window, he had jumped the fence in the back yard and was running down the street. Everyone ran out the front door thinking he was chasing squirrels or getting into trouble.
It turns out that a neighbor 3 doors down who knows Dusty had gotten out of her car at the end of her driveway and was cornered by a pack of raccoons who were trying to get into her trash cans. She had her 6 month old son in the car and was able to shut the car door and run into the house as the raccoons were pushing her away from the car. She described seeing Dusty run into view and literally throw the big male raccoon against the garage wall with his mouth and then chase the other ones through the yard and jumped the fence. Unfortunately he kept going a few houses down and got stuck in a backyard that he couldn't get out of but all morning long neighbors have been calling my parents and saying how wonderful Dusty was and saying to pass on thanks to everyone.
These dogs just keep impressing me more and I'm so glad to be a part of their lives.

Hi All: The puppies have all received their first vaccination, are microchipped, and will be ready to go to their new homes at the end of this month. I am including a softcover copy of the excellent book "Puppies for Dummies" This is a funny and very helpful book that will aid you in your "puppy journey". I am also sending out other helpful information via email to help you prepare for your puppy's arrival. PLEASE make a vet appointment in advance and some vets are booked up weeks in advance! The puppies will be released into the "big yard" today to play with my puppy baby sitters Gidget and our future sire Ofi' Tohbi. I'll post fun pictures and videos soon. It WILL be a muddy mess due to our tropical storm that blew through here yesterday! We still have one female puppy available from this litter.

The Independence Day puppies are 1 month old today and will have their first outside playday this coming week. I will begin puppy evaluation to determine which one will be retained for the continuation of the breed. After all of the girls are assigned to their new homes, I will have one remaining girl available. I will post videos and photos soon. It is our policy to retain two girls for evaluation as future preservation females and after our choice is made, the remaining girl is made available to the public.

We do temperament testing on each puppy which is made available to each new family, along with the health testing results (including the UC Davis Wolfdog testing results). All puppies will be vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, registered, and examined by a veterinarian prior to leaving our home.

Because of the heat, puppies can not be shipped unaccompanied via airline, and must be picked up at my home, or arrangements can be made to meet you at Ontario International Airport if your puppy will be flying with you in the cabin.

Busy day today! My kennel helper came over today, so we dewormed, vaccinated, DNA tested- microchipped the puppies and rebuilt the kennel area (Gotta love Module kennel panels.) I'm prepping the whelping area for possibly 3 litters at the same time! So, that means 2 or possibly 3 durawhelp's needed. It is going to be a busy summer! Thanks Corn Moon Kennels for the Durawhelp suggestion!

Otis, a six month old Native American Indian Dog, has joined OffLeash SoCal for our three week board and train program. Otis comes to us with typical puppy behavior: lack for following commands, leash pulling on walks, being easily distracted, and going potty in the house. Over the next three weeks....

I am soo happy that I am receiving responses to my owners of the older line Night Eyes NAIDs. We also have enough owners who are donating DNA for our NAIDPP Wisdom Panel Program. This is Lycos who is one of our Seboba babies.

A big shout out to Corn Moon Kennels for designing our new NAIDPP banner! Stay tuned for some exciting events!

All NAIDPP breeders will be providing owners with temperament, and physiological test results. The NAIDPP hopes that these results will aid NAID owners/trainers to determine if their puppy is a good candidate for therapy/service work.

Do you know:

+Wolf DNA was introduced into the German Shepherd Dog in Germany." the original German Shepherd studbook shows several pure wolves were used as founders of the breed. Captain Max von Stephanitz, in his quest to produce the perfect working dog, used European herding dogs, including his favourite dog Horand von Grafrath, previously named named Hektor Linksrhein, who was allegedly one-quarter wolf. All GSD's can be traced back to Hektor. In the 1900's von Stephanitz wrote a book “The German Shepherd in Word and Picture”, in it he requested that breeders no longer include pure wolves in their breeding programs. (In subsequent reprints, all references to wolves were removed)."

+Tamaskan Dogs share wolf DNA
+the Malamute and Siberian Husky share a common ancestor.
+Saraloos wolfdog share wolf DNA
+Czechoslovakian Wolfdog same.
+The Indigenous tribes of America's traveling companions shared wolf DNA.

Many popular breeds come from wolves, so why do people become frantic if Wolf DNA appears in your breeds profile?

Due to the Fanatic Frenzy caused by Embarks "W" word"Wolfiness Score." I reached directly out to Embark why they chose that phrase and that I believe that "the wolfy word" is used to draw people to use their test. While my direct comment was ignored, this is their response to my inquiry.

Hi Shirley,

Thank you for reaching out!

To get into what we're looking at with the wolfiness score, there are a couple of dozen regions of the genome that scientists think were really important in dog domestication (called "candidate domestication regions" or CDR) because they have very different patterns of genetic diversity in dogs versus wolves. We look at divergent markers in those regions and assign each dog a "wolfiness" score. Interestingly, some breeds tend to have higher-than-average wolfiness scores than others, such as northern breeds (Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, etc) and some ancient breeds (Shih Tzus, Shiba Inus, etc).

The value of the wolfiness score (in addition to being interesting for owners) is that scientists don't actually know what traits might be associated with each candidate domestication region, but if we can link up these wolfiness markers to traits and behavioral data, we can help scientists decode what each CDR means.

It is important to note that wolfiness scores themselves do not directly correlate to recent wolf ancestry. Dogs with recent wolf ancestry may have higher wolfiness scores, but if a dog does have recent wolf ancestry in their DNA, and we have identified it via DNA testing, it will be reflected as a percentage of Gray Wolf in their breed results.

Best,
