The mission of Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) NY is to help New York City’s most vulnerable residents remain with their pets by delivering critical programs and services through a community of partners and volunteers. Our programs help keep pets in their homes while protecting and promoting the human-animal bond that is so physically and psychologically valuable to our clients. We hope you'll help raise awareness for our work by inviting your friends to follow our page!

Today is National Cat Day! Those pesky dogs can hog the spotlight sometimes so it's easy to forget that many of our volunteers (such as Carsen pictured here with her tabby Buffy) help our clients with litter box maintenance and helping them take care of their beloved kitties!

Happy Foster Friday! Today we're going to highlight one of our (many) successful foster stories! Tula is the one with her tongue out :)

In February, PAWS was contacted about two dogs, Hank (3 y/o) and Tula (10 y/o), two sweet terrier mixes, who were left at home while their guardian was hospitalized. We immediately arranged foster homes as well as vet visits, and both dogs were unfortunately diagnosed with medical issues that needed to be surgically addressed. Hank had a congenital eye condition and Tula had stage 4 dental disease and needed several extractions to avoid more serious complications.

Sadly, just a few days into foster care, Hank and Tula's guardian passed away. Our goal changed from fostering to rehoming, but first we had to address their medical needs. Hank and Tula ended up braving through two surgeries each: Hank for his eye condition as well as a gallbladder removal, and Tula for the dental procedure. Everyone was relieved to see how much better they were feeling!

With the help of Hank's foster, we found his forever home - an experienced Fox Terrier guardian with a lovely yard for Hank to play and be his energetic self. And once Tula recovered from her surgeries, she found her forever home with one of our amazing PAWS NY volunteers!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. A 2021 survey by the Urban Resource Institute showed 97% of respondents said keeping their pets with them is an important factor in deciding whether or not to seek shelter. Having a place for pets to go can be the difference between safety and staying in a dangerous situation. At PAWS NY, we believe in preserving the human animal bond for all New Yorkers, regardless of their circumstances.

This is why we are so grateful for the generous Safe Housing grant that Red Rover provided us earlier this year, which will help ensure that New York survivors can keep their beloved pets.

PAWSNY is also proud to announce our partnership with NY SAVE! NY SAVE provides emergency funding for the veterinary care of sick or injured companion animals owned by lower-income New York City residents who are unable to pay the costs due to financial hardship. Through their Hospital Partnership Program, NY SAVE grants monies to participating hospitals. We can call them about a case and then get subsidized care at one of their partner hospitals. Thanks !

Kara was torn. Her 5-year-old terrier mix Millhouse had never spent a single night without her. But now, she had to seek treatment - with no one to watch her pup. She reached out to PAWS NY and within hours, PAWS NY had secured an emergency foster for Millhouse.

Kara received daily updates—pictures of Millhouse running and playing in the backyard with his new foster brother Finn. She could feel the weight lifting off her chest. Knowing Millhouse was in good hands allowed her to focus on her recovery.

A month passed, and Kara completed her treatment. She could barely contain herself when the front door opened, and there he was— Millhouse, eyes wide, tail wagging furiously. For the first time in a long time, she felt hope—not just for herself, but for both of them.

Your support helps us provide this crucial care, keeping animals like Millhouse safe while their guardians seek treatment. Even $20 goes a long way in preserving the human animal bond.

Today is the LAST DAY we are tripling all donations thanks to a generous donor match.

Attention New Yorkers! Looking to volunteer with some cute animals, but not sure how? Come volunteer for PAWS NY! Our next virtual orientation is on Tuesday 10/1 at 5pm.

Every week, Joe (human) takes Fenix (labrador) out for a walk around the neighborhood. They talk about everything from politics and current events to relationship advice (Fenix is afraid of commitment). Joe looks forward to his walks with Fenix every week and Fenix loves the extra exercise!

Sign up for our next orientation! It's free!
