🚨 Important Update: Leptospirosis Now a Core Vaccine for ALL Dogs
The 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines have been updated to classify the leptospirosis vaccine as CORE for all dogs starting at 12 weeks of age – regardless of lifestyle, location, or breed.
Why the change?
🌆 ALL dogs are at risk—urban, suburban, and rural.
⚠️ Potentially fatal, even with treatment.
🔄 Zoonotic—it can spread from pets to humans.
🏢 Dogs in daycare and kennels also face exposure risks.
You can find the full update in the Nov/Dec issue of JAAHA, or check out the full 2022 Canine Vaccination Guidelines here: aaha.org/canine-vaccinations

Calming Methods

1. If your dog has mild anxiety around loud noises then consider mild, more natural calming remedies such as CBC, melatonin, L-theonine,Valerian, and Chamomile. I like ElleVet Calm & Comfort Chews.

2. Essential oils that can help include: Frankincense, Rose Otto, Hops, and Cornflower hydrosol. A perfect blend for July 4th (or really any time your dog is stressed) is Rescue Remedy. It contains 5 single flower essences and can help with all kinds of stressful situations for your dog. It can be given every 15 minutes until your dog starts to calm.

3. If you know your dog has severe anxiety around loud noises, then make an appointment with your veterinarian to discuss stronger anti-anxiety medications such as trazodone or va**um. Start with low doses of these to be sure you do not over-medicate. Only use for severe cases.

4. Thundershirts may work for some dogs. This works for dogs like a weighted blanket would work for us. The fitted shirt applies a gentle, constant pressure that can have a dramatic calming effect.

5. Distraction – this can be a huge help when preventing anxiety in your dog. Have his favorite chewable bone such as a frozen raw bone, betterbone, or yak Chew available for emergency distraction. Keep frozen peanut butter kongs in the freezer. A lick mat with peanut butter or mashed sweet potato is also a great way to change his focus.

7. Set up a comfortable, insulated space that is quiet where your dog can hang out during fireworks.

8. Play white noise to try to drown out the fireworks.

9. Place some noise canceling ear muffs on your dog. DerYEP Dog Earmuffs for Hearing Protection can be found on amazon. Only use these if your dog doesn't stress when you put them on him.

10. Comfort your dog. It's a great time to give a gentle massage and rub down.

Wishing you and your dog a safe and calm 4th of July!
