he Australian kelpie is a medium-sized herding dog breed in Australia. They're known for their athletic bodies, energetic personalities, intelligence and for being driven.
They love to work hard and actually need a job to do They are not the type of dog to have hanging around the house or chillin' with you.
Most working Australian kelpies herd sheep, though some roundup cattle, other dogs, people, you name it!
The Australian kelpie is friendly, affectionate, can be loving and even cuddly with children and typically gets along well with other pets.
However, they might need to be discouraged from excessive herding of family members... just saying! Add to this, they are highly trainable, eager to please, and loyal. The Australian kelpie can be the ultimate companion for those who understand the breed’s special needs.

The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is the original Australian working dog, developed before the Australian Cattle Dog and the Australian Kelpie.

It is known affectionately as ‘the Stumpy’ and is a descendant from the Smithfield, a black and white rough-coated ‘bobtail’ dog that originally came from the Smithfield Markets in England.

The Smithfield was used to herd just about everything from ducks and geese to cattle. Through selective breeding of bobtail dogs, the Stumpy was developed in the mid-19th century. The Rottweiler is a large working breed from Germany. These strong dogs were used to pull meat-laden carts to market. However, the Rottweiler’s history dates even further back, with ties to the Roman Empire, where they were used as herding and guarding dogs.

Rottweilers are renowned for their versatility and serve as exceptional working dogs, excelling in law enforcement roles, search and rescue, and even as service dogs.

There are multiple types of Rottweilers: American, German, and Roman. There are also long-haired Rottweilers, who showcase a beautiful, silky coat. Of course, long-haired Rotties still come in their iconic black and tan coloring.

Did you now that Rottweilers are known for their calm and confident demeanor. They exhibit a gentle and affectionate nature when properly trained and socialized from an early age.

The Rottweiler temperament is exceptionally loyal and protective, making them natural guardians of their homes and loved ones. Generally when we think of an Australian breed of dog, we think Cattle dogs...however, the Tenterfield Terrier was developed in Australia and it is just as popular for its ability to hunt small prey as for its aptitude as a family companion.

These little dogs are much more than meets the eye.

The Tenterfield Terrier is an active and energetic breed.and are particularly talented in hunting small prey, so they have a high prey drive – your dog may need extra socialization and training in order to get along with small household pets.

These dogs do well with other dogs, however, and they are amenable to cats when raised together from a young age. These terriers are loving and loyal as family pets and they make a great companion for children as well as older individuals. You can tell a lot about a dog by looking at its face. Dogs that have a pointy face resembling wolves live longer than dogs with flat faces. Dogs like bulldogs or pugs often deal with more health problems as well due to their facial structure, but these breeds did not get bred for activity and work, they are descendants of royal lap dogs.

It once was common for Koolies to have one or two blue eyes, but since the DNA discovery linking blue eyes in Koolie to the merle gene, which creates blind/deaf pups, improved safer breeding practices with the encouraged merle to solid mating for the health of the breed and not the looks.

As a result there has been a decline in blue eyed Koolies. The common eye colour today is brown eyes for reds and brown or black eyes for blacks, and tones of these two primary colours, occasionally you can still get blue eye(s), or part thereof. Coat lengths come in smooth, short, short rough, medium, double coated or single, with feathers on their legs or without; long coats are not common.

The Koolie is first and foremost a working breed, bred for stamina, endurance and to be biddable. Like all working breeds the Koolies natural trait is to herd anything that moves, this includes sheep, cattle, goats, horses, buffalo and fowl. Koolies are known to naturally back (jump on the back of) sheep as well as cattle.

For hundreds of years, British Naval and merchant ships carried Terriers on board. These little dogs appeared on no manifest, since they were neither paid nor fed – their job was to kill the rats that infested all ships, and their food was their kill.

Coming from all over the British Isles, each was typical of the area it came from including:
- Ancestors of the Skye
- the Scotch (not the modern Scottish and about half the modern size)
- the English Black and Tan

When the First Fleet came to Australia, it brought with it not only convicts, soldiers, smallpox and sailors, but also mice, rats and small Terriers. Early crops, better suited to an English rather than an Australian environment, failed and the colonists were on the verge of starvation. At this time, the little Terriers were highly prized as they preyed on the vermin that feasted on food supplies.

The Kangaroo Dog is not a widely known dog, but it has a fascinating history.

In short, Kangaroo Dogs were highly coveted when they were first produced although they were not purebred or even meant to be.

Each breeder crossed them with other dogs they felt would contribute desirable traits .
In at least one book written in 1877 by Charles Hallock and titled "Game Animals, Bird and Fishes of North America," a pair of the then-current Kangaroo Dogs were said to be worth $600.00. By today's standards, that is nearly $14,000.
