Well, it’s an update no rescue wants to make. Sally is struggling with the concept of house and crate training, and we’ve reached a point where behavioral euthanasia may be our only option. 💔
We spent months working with her, and would have some progress followed by regression. Finally, with no fosters able to manage her and at our wits end, we sent her to a professional board and train facility where she’s been for the past 7 weeks.
She’s made progress in a lot of ways, but not with house training. She doesn’t keep her space clean, she poops up to 5 times a day, and will go potty inside even after being outside for extended periods. Her trainer is saddened and frustrated, as everyone expected better results.
We’ve had her back to the vet for another exam, full bloodwork, a comprehensive f***l, and a urinalysis to ensure she didn’t have something medical going on. Everything came back perfect with the exception of some mild inflammatory changes in her bloodwork, so we started her on an anti-inflammatory, a medication to prevent urine leaking in case that was part of her issue, gave her a 5 day broad spectrum dewormer, and changed her to a prescription diet specially formulated for animals with food allergies. Unfortunately, nothing seems to have helped.
She’s still having accidents, and despite how smart she is, no one seems to be able to help her grasp the concept of keeping her space clean. She just doesn’t seem to mind being dirty. 😞 We’re pretty sure this has something to do with her being excessively crated in her past, and learning that she has to do her business where she is. It’s absolutely heartbreaking.
If anyone has any hail mary ideas, feel free to pitch them. This has literally become a life and death issue for Sally, and we simply are out of ideas, options, and connections on our end. We’ve truly exhausted all trying to help her.
We’re going to try and spoil Sally as best we can in the meantime. 😭 Please be kind; this is not a decision anyone wanted to make, and we didn’t enter into it lightly. Negative comments are not productive and will be deleted.
