For those experiencing family violence, the decision to leave is never easy. The fear of the unknown, the trauma of the past, and the overwhelming responsibility of leaving behind loved ones can weigh heavily. Often, those loved ones aren't just people — they're pets, companions who have offered comfort in times of hardship and been a source of unconditional love. But the choice to protect oneself from violence can feel impossible when the safety of a beloved animal is at stake.
That's where organisations like ours step in, offering a lifeline. Through safety net foster care services, we ensure that pets are safe, cared for, and protected while their owners seek refuge. This vital support allows survivors of family violence to leave without the heart-wrenching fear of abandoning their furry or feathered family members. It provides the space to heal, rebuild, and ultimately create a new life, knowing that their pets are in good hands and waiting for them on the other side.
In these moments of crisis, having someone to care for both you and your animal can make all the difference. With our help, survivors can break free, with one less thing to worry about — knowing that their pets will be there, safe, when they are ready to reunite. No one should have to choose between their safety and the safety of the ones they love, and through our efforts and the efforts of organisations like ours, they don't have to.
We do need your help to continue these services, so if you can get involved or donate, that would be amazing. Please go to www.dontforgetmypet.org.au
