Our Bear'story:
Spectacled Bear Publishing was founded in 2016 on the premise that many publishers consider children’s literature, poetry, novellas, and non-fiction as addenda to their libraries of authors who write about murder, mayhem, and monsters. We have nothing against these three Ms personally; but we offer an alternative that doesn’t cause nightmares, heart palpitations, or fear of the dar
k. Her logic is that if literary agents can leave publishing companies to start their own agencies, then why can’t authors bypass those same publishing companies and start their own without being categorized as “self-published”? The company’s name was created serendipitously when an internet search revealed the first choice for a name was taken. Spectacled Bear Publishing acknowledges all bears in literature, such as Winnie the Pooh, Paddington, Beady, and Lynd Ward’s biggest bear. It also loves the actual spectacled bear from the animal kingdom. About the real Spectacled Bears:
During that same internet search regarding the viability of the name, we discovered that there is a real spectacled bear in the actual animal kingdom. It is rather small as bears go, lives in South America along the Andes Mountain range, and is on the vulnerable list. “Vulnerable” isn’t as awful as “endangered,” but it means that the species is in danger. Spectacled bears are private by nature, mostly herbivores, and eager to cause harm to no one unless threatened. Their habitat, especially tall trees in a forest, is being trampled in favor of lumber and farming. There are several agencies determined to help save this charming creature. While it isn’t the mission of Spectacled Bear Publishing to do that, we acknowledge our connection with the species and are donating a dollar from every purchase of our initial offering, Philip & Phoebe, to the World Wildlife Foundation. In case you are wondering, the Spectacled Bear Publishing logo isn’t a true replica of the actual animal. Rather, our bear is more teddy-ish and wears spectacles to show his intelligence. Our bear is an avid reader and writes a blog for this site on an old manual typewriter.
