National Pet Obesity Awareness Day

Today is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day. According to the Association for Pet Obesity, 59% of cats and 54% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese. We understand it can be hard to say no to those cute faces when they're begging for a treat.

Pet obesity can cause serious health issues to our furry loved ones. As responsible pet owners, we need to make sure we're keeping our pets feeling their best. Here are some tips to help your pet stay in shape:

Make sure your pet gets exercise daily. Take plenty of walks, jogs, or give them room to run! Toys and climbing towers can be great exercise for cats.
Feed a species-appropriate diet to your pet and follow recommended guidelines on the amount they should eat daily.
Say no to table foods! Some human foods can be healthy for pets, but do your research and be sure that if you're sharing your food, it is something healthy for your pet. Feed your pets healthy all-natural treats. Treats with added fillers and artificial ingredients can cause your pet to gain weight.

Tuffy's Pet Foods is recalling approximately 1600 cases of its NutriSource Pure Vita Salmon Entree dog food because they may contain high levels of vitamin D.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, high levels of vitamin D can lead to kidney failure and death in dogs.

"Heads Up Pet Parents if You're Feeding Your Pets Store-bought Jerky Treats!!⚠️

A new veterinary study published in the journal of Tierärztliche Praxis found that dogs are still developing a kidney disorder called Fanconi-like syndrome when fed pet jerky treats.

Fanconi is a disorder of kidney function that results in excess excretion of glucose, electrolytes and amino acids in urine. Signs of the illness included decreased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, polydipsia and polyuria.

This new study isn't actually new news to veterinarians, in 2007, veterinarians became aware of Fanconi-like signs in multiple other dog breeds without a recognized genetic predisposition, and alerted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, prompting an investigation. The chief suspect then was found to be commercial jerky treats.

As of today, the FDA has received approximately 5,200 complaints of illnesses associated with consumption of chicken🍗, duck🦆, or sweet potato🍠 jerky treats. The reports involve more than 6,200 dogs, 26 cats, three people, and include more than 1,140 canine deaths." - Rodney Habib
