“Yet do not cast all hope away. Tomorrow is unknown. Rede oft is found at the riding of the sun.”

When your horses start training each other 😂
Thank you to everyone for your concern for Legolas’s eye - he is doing great and his eye is fine!
Remember this is the sweet gelding who was terrified of ropes and halters and had a rope halter left on him far too long previously which he still has scars from today. We have been haltering him multiple times a day now since that first time we reintroduced it, and we have been getting him used to being rubbed, touched and brushed all over, picking up his feet, and other things he will need to get used to for health reasons and interacting with humans. He was very reactive in the beginning and still was not comfortable with touch behind his shoulders or on his legs, but he’s gradually relaxed and now is fine being touched all over including on his hindquarters and legs. We noticed he was also very reactive to a rope, so here we have a brief video of the kind of exercises we do to get them to feel calm and confident about things they start out being afraid of. Keeping the sessions short and sweet helps them learn quickly, so this is just in the middle of the barn - no round pen or arena needed. These kinds of things can be done in a stall, paddock or pasture as well.
Legolas is the ultimate caregiver personality. He’s the nanny gelding who takes care of all the babies and his friends, but doesn’t want anyone to notice him. If anyone tries to get close or show him care, he withdraws behind his walls. I wonder if he was happy and cared for once, and he felt someone loved him and then was betrayed by it.
Despite his walls, he is calming and softening. He is already so much more confident. He has started relaxing when we brush him instead of tensing with anxiety. I tell him every day that it’s safe to trust here- we will make sure he is never hurt or betrayed again.

Taini playing with me at liberty. It’s incredible to see how she’s transformed into this gorgeous, sassy, confident, playful mare- completely unrecognizable from when we pulled her out of the auction back at the end of August, just a starved skeleton of herself. Picture of that day featured last.

Haltering Legolas for the first time since he’s been here—
Legolas was an Arabian gelding who was rescued from slaughter only to then be abandoned again by the home he thought was saving him. When he arrived at Driftwood Horse Rescue and Sanctuary he was terrified of everything and wouldn’t let anyone get close to him. He had been wearing an old rope halter from the kill pen for months before he arrived here and it had left gauging scars over the sensitive points on his nose. As soon as he let us get close enough to touch him we took it off, and he has been scared at even the sight of a rope or halter ever since (can’t say that we blame him). We let him decompress and just be a horse out in the pasture, and we’ve just recently started working to reintroduce him to the tools humans like to use, by just gently rubbing a lead line on his shoulder and neck.
But his eye has had some discharge for a couple days now and we want to vet to examine it in the morning. In order to examine it, he will need to be haltered. This is his first reintroduction to the halter again since his arrival here back in November, and before it was something he only knew as an object of pain.
Legolas still has big, quick reactions that are left over from the days spent in fear and terror. But this horse is one brave and strong individual. It is so impressive to see how much he is able to overcome his worry and reach a place of quiet calmness and connection by the end.
