Breed Focus: Orpington

Orpington chickens are a breed of chicken originating in Orpington, a town in Kent, England.

They make excellent first chickens since they’ve an incredibly docile nature. They’re also very quiet.

Orpingtons are not prolific layers. They might lay 180-200 eggs a year. But this can change depending on age and environmental factors. They do make excellent mothers though - because of this they have a tendency to go broody too.

Their calm, docile nature means they can get bullied when in a mixed flock. That said, their calm, friendly nature makes them great hens for children to look after.

Orpingtons come in a range of colours. This picture is of a Buff Orpington.

Don’t be fooled by the picture - Orpingtons are LARGE chickens! Because of this, it’s important that your coop can accommodate them. If your roosting bars are high, you’ll need to ensure the chickens have a way to climb up to the roosting bars - because of their size, they’re not good flyers.

In short: if you’re looking for a calm, docile, friendly, easy to care for hen, then the Orpington might be a good choice for you! 🐓🐓🐓

Don’t you just love all of Katie Tea Biscuit’s beautiful speckles!! She loves standing on her favorite chair and looking out over the runs! The morning sun was hitting those feathers just beautifully!!

🤔 If I’m being totally honest, this is not at all what I envisioned when I purchased this cat bed. I was in no way prepared for the chicken snuggles that would take place in it. When it first happened I nearly had a heart attack from cute overload 💀 ❤️ . Swipe for a video of the aforementioned chicken cuddles, but with EXTREME CAUTION ⚠️ 🥰😂

Willkommen Frieda 🤎

Die Orpigruppe ist gewachsen 🥰
Frieda ist keineswegs eine träge, dicke Orpington Dame... im Gegenteil, sie ist richtig flott unterwegs. Heute verließ sie erst etwas zögerlich den Stall, doch dann erkundeten sie das komplette Grundstück. Irgendwann kehrte sie dann zu ihrer Freundin Finna zurück und genoss mit ihr ein kleines Nickerchen in der Voliere. Die anderen Hühner waren null beeindruckt von den Beiden und es gab kein Stress.
Heute Abend vermutete ich schon, die Zwei ins Bettchen tragen zu müssen, aber Frieda saß schon auf der Stange, wo sie auch die letzte Nacht schlief. Ich war überrascht.
Aber jetzt schlaft erstmal gut
