Akita Angels is an IRS-approved, 501C3 animal-welfare organization that specializes in Akitas and other large, dominant and/or high-risk breed dogs. Every member of Akita Angels is an uncompensated volunteer and we rely on voluntary donations to fulfill our mission, which is to save the lives of Akitas and help their families in need. This page is dedicated to every Akita that ends up in the wrong

home, is misunderstood, mistreated, or not given the proper care, feeding, love, or respect that these intelligent, loyal, and beautiful dogs deserve.

Yesterday “Peaches” - a 10 week old Akita mix - was in trouble due to overcrowding at the shelter. This afternoon she is in foster care with us. It took a village and a 10+ hour drive but she is SAFE with us and so many thanks to all who helped. Patricia Etherington, Dorsey and Josh, networkers, and more. ❤️

This is not the update we wanted to share today, but Tank and Akiko and their Human were involved in a serious car accident on their way home from a long walk in the hills. The vehicle they were in is completely totaled and a complete loss. We know that Marvin was watching over his babies from Heaven, as all three of them were lucky to walk away without any visible injuries. We thank everyone for their prayers for this new little family as they recover physically and emotionally from this.

Thanksgiving Holiday Tips
Every year, we get frantic calls and emails into the days leading up to and after Thanksgiving, so we decided to start a little early this year with some helpful reminders about celebrating Thanksgiving safely.
• Visitors can upset your pets. Akitas are naturally introverted and not as social as a Golden Retriever or a Labrador. As well-socialized as your Akita might be, he/she might just need a break from it all. If your Akita is nervous when people visit your home, help reduce emotional stress by setting him/her up in another room and turn on a radio or television. Leave a small bowl of water and a favorite toy. Set an alarm on your cell phone to remind you to check on them frequently and give them bathroom and stretch/fresh air breaks.
• Alcohol and Dogs DO NOT MIX! Too often in rescue, especially around certain holidays, we get a frantic call from someone whose normally friendly and well-socialized dog has bit someone at a party. Alcohol is always involved! People under the influence of even just a few drinks have been known to behave in a manner that your dog finds threatening or even just odd, and some dogs can be sensitive towards people under the influence of alcohol. Be safe, sane, and don’t drink with dogs.
• Visiting DOGS can really upset your dog! It seems like it’s trendy for guests to bring their dogs to your barbecue or even a friend’s wedding, but allowing guests to bring their dog to your Thanksgiving dinner is a really bad idea. If guests vising from out of town have a dog with them, invest in an appropriate sized crate (or borrow one) or consider isolating them in a separate spare room.
• Remember to FEED your dog! While everyone is busy cooking, serving, entertaining, eating, cleaning up and digesting...your dog might be wondering when his/her dinner is coming. Just like a hungry child can quickly become a cranky child, a hungry dog can become a cranky dog. If you choose to not isolate or crate your dog, be careful around high-value food resources, especially proteins like turkey, ham, beef or anything with butter…dogs love butter.
• Overindulging in the family feast is unhealthy for humans - and even worse for dogs: Fatty foods are hard for animals to digest. Poultry bones can damage your pet's digestive tract. Holiday sweets can contain ingredients that are poisonous to pets. If you want to share a Thanksgiving treat with your pet, make or buy a treat that is made just for them.
• Take the trash OUT. Many Akitas are smart enough to find their way inside a trash can, even those with a motion-sensor-lid or foot-pedal mechanism. All scraps, bones and packaging should be tightly secured in a trash bag placed in a closed trash can outdoors (or behind a closed, locked door.)
• Have the phone number of the closest veterinary clinic and after-hours or 24-hour hospital on hand. Quick action can save lives. If you believe your dog has been poisoned or eaten something it shouldn't have, call your veterinarian or local veterinary emergency clinic immediately. Signs of pet distress include: sudden changes in behavior, depression, pain, vomiting, or diarrhea.
• Watch the exits. If you choose to let your dogs roam free in the house, make sure you watch them closely, especially when people are entering or leaving your home. We don't want your four-legged family member to make a break for it out the door and become lost.
• Identification tags and microchips reunite families. Make sure all of your pets have proper identification with your current contact information on their microchip and license. If they do sneak out, they're more likely to be returned to you.

I hope that you can all see this post - be warned it is disturbing.

Everyone's "fur baby" is not perfect - and even a perfect dog is a DOG - We have heard countless stories of toddlers being injured by dogs who are family members, who never had a problem with the child before...Again they are dogs, animals, and your baby - your REAL baby, is not their baby, they are not dogs - dogs are dogs, little kids, toddlers, babies are a conundrum for most dogs. Babies do not respond or behave, sound or smell, like adult humans.

Please read and know that what is said here is all too true. Even if you are in the room are you faster than a startled dog?

Your dog is not bad, this dog was not bad, neither were the parents - they were right there they never left their child alone with the dog - but dogs are dogs and babies are not.

A truly tragic and horrific case to read.
A seven month old baby girl killed by the family pet in a hideous incident in their home.
The little one leant on to the dog as she was toddling and was bitten on the neck and very sadly died. A stark reminder of how fast dogs can turn, How quickly something can escalate and how fatal one bite can be.

A dog will correct other dog’s behaviour with a snap or bite and in an agitated state of mind will lash out before investigating the situation. The Malinois was fixated on a bag when the baby touched him, both parents were in the vicinity and present when the dog bit.

Owners who have asked for advice with young babies around dogs know I am incredibly strict and have a 0 tolerance for babies/toddlers/young children being next to, touching, climbing on, leaning on, sitting with or “petting” a dog and this is the worst case example of exactly why I am so adamant about it!
Dogs shouldn’t have any access to young children who are crawling for exactly this reason! It’s so fast!! And in this case the dog had been seen by behaviourists for “dominating” behaviour in the months before the incident.
I would have absolutely tied the owner down to ensuring the dog and baby were never in the room together whether or not the parents were present for exactly this reason so maybe some owners out there who think I’ve been too harsh with rules around babies will understand why now!!
“Oh we never leave them alone together” is absolutely NOT good enough!!!! The parents were right next to the dog and baby!! Please remember this!!

Everyone thinks being a dog behaviourist is a dream job working with dogs but I have to deal with child bites and injuries every week and it’s always upsetting and highly emotional!! The only way to deal with this is to PREVENT!
And if you need to hear it here’s your reminder!
Dogs are NOT a furbaby
Dogs are NOT thrilled for the arrival of your baby
Dogs are NOT protecting your baby
Dogs are NOT “kissing” your child
Dogs are an ANIMAL
Dogs are an apex predator in your home!

Please no hate or comments about the parents in this case they have suffered enough and I hope this post may just save another child from injury!

"Free Akitas."

That was the title on the ad on one of the local "free" pages (ad was flagged and removed.)

Please .... LOOK at this photo. Fire off your thoughts. Be be honest here. Brutally Honest. Does anyone think this is "OK"? Does anyone think this guy (or gal) gives a single cr*p about these dogs? Do these dogs look loved? well cared for? socialized? how much do you want to bed they are all unaltered and now in-breeding? Yet ... people are still supporting BUYING a "puppy" from a**holes like this and rescues are left to mop up the mess.

Today, I was going through a box of things and found this. In fifth grade, my son - now an adult - had a teacher who encouraged students to write and each day the students would be given a question or topic. This is the first question/Journal entry and the first question was: "Do you think your parent(s) are from another planet, and if so, which one? You may make up your own planet."

He wrote: I think my Mom is from the planet “Need-A-Dog”. The only thing she can think about is a new dog and when we will get one. The climate of Need-a-Dog is very rainy but when it does rain, all it rains is just dogs. The location of the planet is in another universe named Dogtopia. All the lifeforms there have five or more dogs running around their house all day and they are just barking away. The only thing they drive there is BIG dogs. The houses they live in are made from big dog bones and the more dogs you own, the more rich you are. If you dare have a cat on Need-a-Dog, it is punishable by lifetime in jail. So now you know that my Mom is from Need-a-Dog in the universe of Dogtopia.

Ooooooooh …… sit back and make room for Fantasia, this magical Unicorn-Akita with colorful gilded wings, who will trot into the home of one lucky person. Many, Many, MANY thanks to Diane Lynch, who not only imagined (and then organized and implemented) this mystical fundraiser for Akita Rescues in the U.S., but she also personally painted this one, named Fantasia, which benefits Akita Angels. We are incredibly honored as she spends countless hours helping Akitas and Akita Rescues in need, but actually made time to paint Fantasia for Akita Angels!

No donation is too small, and all donations towards Fantasia and proceeds from this Fundraiser help us fulfill our mission and are tax deductible as allowed under law. Thank you for your participating and your support!

PLACED AND SAFE.

Main photo: Tank, Akiko, and Marvin, RIP (11/15/1963-10/17/2024)

Last week, we shared the plight of Tank and Akiko, suddenly orphaned after their Human passed away on under very tragic circumstances. What we did not initially share with everyone was that Akiko was one our “our” Akitas, and we had placed her with this lovely man, in early 2022, when she was about 6-8 months old. In fact, Akiko – who had been passed around many hands in her short life – had come to us, from another all-breed rescue – from Northern California – who took her in and then asked us to take her. It took a village to make Akiko’s journey to us happen and we thank Vince, Mari, and Steve, who not only temporarily housed Akiko, but got her here to us.

That’s when we met Marvin, a lovely man of Japanese descent whose family had owned Akitas for many, many years. In early 2022 shortly after Akiko came into rescue, he inquired about Akiko. He had Tank, a gorgeous, 1 year old Male, and Tank was lonely after his female Akita companion had recently passed. Tank was also a “rescue”, and Marvin had adopted him from an entirely different all-breed rescue. All the proverbial “boxes were checked”, and Marvin brought Tank, and not only was Marvin in love, but Tank and Akiko immediately hit it off. Over the next few years, Marvin and I stayed in touch - mostly by text. It could be any time of day or night, that my phone would make the “Text message” sound and it was Marvin - sharing pictures of “his kids” and thanking me for Akiko and for bringing them so much joy and love to him and Tank.

So you can imagine the complete shock when we learned of Marvin’s passing. Besides shock, there were so little information and so many emotions. What was indisputable was that there was no one, no next of kin, who could take in two adult Akitas and it would have been very easy for us to worry only about Akiko. But we didn’t. These two had been together for almost 3 years and needed to stay together. For the last week, we have been working, every day, to figure out a plan and place for not just Akiko – but also Tank. We learned that the all-breed rescue that had adopted Tank to Marvin in 2019 was now no longer around, and Tank’s microchip – implanted by a veterinarian/clinic had never been registered and changed into Marvin’s name, and the vet was also no longer in business. This created a huge issue with ownership as, in a nutshell, Tank’s microchip had never been transferred into Marvin’s name and it wasn’t enough to prove that he had owned and had physical and legal custody of Tank for the past 3-4 years. This has been a time-consuming nightmare to say the least.

After our post, we had received an inquiry from a previous adopter and one who is not on social media. This woman had RESCUED six (6) Akitas over the years, and she was interested in another Akita we had in rescue. She is self-employed, works from home, semi-retired, financially stable and physically fit. She has been owned by Akitas both tough and soft, and everything in between. When I told her about Tank and Akiko – and Marvin - the phone went silent for a second, and then she said, “I’ll take them.” In the coming days, plans were made. They involved a plane, a car rental, and a long drive – with two Akitas – back home.

Yesterday, we made it happen. Our Adopter arrived at Burbank Airport, and we picked her up, met up with Tank and Akiko’s temporary foster family at a neighboring park, got them in the car, then got on the freeway and headed north. Approximately 6 hours later, they arrived with their new Human, their new Mommy, at their new HOME. It was a long day for all, and while we wanted to share the incredible update, to be honest, I was too emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausted to even try to write this post.

Our Grief … and Relief … are still, even now, running high.
Especially so because Tank and Akiko arrived at their new home, with their new Human, on the eve of Marvin’s Birthday. Yes, today would have been Marvin’s 61st Birthday.

We know that Marvin had a hand, from Heaven, in this Miracle. In a climate where adoptions are slow and the number of dogs in need exceeds the available resources, we somehow made this happen and we hope that Marvin can rest easy knowing his “kids, his babies, his Akitas”, are now SAFE.

We always tell our Adopters that we STAND BY OUR DOGS, for Life, and will always do what’s best for THE DOG, even if that means taking in and taking responsibility for another one.
We will post updates as available.

If you wish to make a donation in Marvin’s memory (11/16/1963 - 10/17/2024), please visit our website (AkitaAngels.org) or directly by Zelle or PayPal at: [email protected]. (LINK to our DONATE page in the comments).

Happy 101st Birthday Hachikō! Hachikō was a Japanese Akita remembered for his remarkable loyalty to his owner, Hidesaburō Ueno, for whom he continued to wait for over nine years following Ueno's death.
Hachikō was born on November 10, 1923, at a farm near the city of Ōdate, Akita Prefecture. In 1924, Ueno, a professor at the Tokyo Imperial University, brought him to live in Shibuya, Tokyo, as his pet. Hachikō would meet Ueno at Shibuya Station every day after his commute home. This continued until May 21, 1925, when Ueno passed away while at work. From then until his death on March 8, 1935, Hachikō would return to Shibuya Station every day to await Ueno's return.
Hachikō is known in Japanese as chūken Hachikō, "faithful dog Hachikō".
