Love a bit of leg yield!

𝗟𝗘𝗚-𝗬𝗜𝗘𝗟𝗗 is a great suppling exercise for all horses that can be easily incorporated into your schooling sessions.

The horse moves forwards and sideways on two tracks. The legs crossing the midline in adduction and away in abduction - whilst maintaining lateral flexion through the neck and body away from the direction of travel.

This movement mobilises your horse's ribs, back and hips, activates the deep vertebral muscles and is a useful contributory factor in developing longitudinal and lateral flexibility.

Leg-yield is a powerful tool to have in your training tool-kit!

🚫 Never exercise or transport your horse on an empty stomach! 🐴

Your horse’s stomach produces acid constantly, even when there's no food inside.

An empty stomach allows accumulated, unbuffered (lack of saliva from chewing) gastric acid to slosh and irritate the sensitive, unprotected upper portion of the stomach—putting your horse at higher risk of gastric ulcers. 😬

🌾 Feeding a small amount of hay or chaff before work or travel helps form a protective fibre mat in the stomach. This layer absorbs acid and helps stop it from splashing onto the non-glandular (upper) region.

🛻 Transport is an extended isometric exercise—but what does that mean?

➡️ It means that during travel, your horse must engage and hold tension in their core muscles for long periods in order to stay balanced while the vehicle moves, stops, and turns.
This continuous core engagement compresses the stomach and pushes acidic contents upwards—especially problematic if the stomach is empty.

✅ A simple handful of forage before loading or riding can greatly reduce gastric stress and help keep your horse healthy, happy, and comfortable.
