It's essential that every puppy learns to enjoy being handled, especially on the parts of the body that turn into common bite triggers. Early puppyhood handling and socialization is easy to do and makes a huge difference in a dog's temperament and quality of life, for the rest of their life!

One of my best friends and closest colleagues is in need of help. Two of her dogs abruptly went into stage 4 kidney failure due to Lepto. They are now home recovering with daily trips to the vet for treatment & monitoring. This is a very expensive vet bill for two dogs simultaneously.

Please donate and share. Every $1 helps.

This little beast has severe separation anxiety.
But we had a big win this morning.
This morning was her first time (in two wks) settling onto her cot.
This video has two wins:
1. Lila relaxing & being still on her cot. This girl is constantly on the move, ping ponging on the leash & tether.
2. Lila being within view of me (without having access to me) & not barking for my attention.

Moments like this are what keep me going 🥳😍

This is Lila, she has severe separation anxiety. This is her first time settling outside of her crate. If she’s not crated, she is moving.

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

A dog’s nose a wonderfully, incredibly sensitive thing. And it can do truly amazing things. But a wonderful element of a dog using their nose, is that it’s incredibly calming, relaxing and mentally enriching for them. But it can feel overwhelming knowing where to start using a dog’s nose. Competitive nosework can feel intimidating because it requires some special equipment (Though not much!) and sometimes it can feel challenging to teach a dog traditional games of Hide-n-Seek when they don’t have much of a stay, or patience. And while barn hunt is an amazing sport, not every one has access to the set up for practice on a regular basis. But something that requires no special equipment, or any special locations, and is suitable for literally ANY dog of any age, skill level or physical ability is tracking! And teaching a dog to track starts with what we call “puppy circles” (so called because they are often started with very young dogs.)

These circles require only an outdoor space, a little bit of time and a dog who likes to eat snacks. You just mark the start of the circle, lay the track and bring my dog out to go to town sniffing. It’s a wonderful way to provide so much mental enrichment, while it doesn’t require a whole lot of physicality from dog or human. This makes it an ideal game to play with young, growing puppies, or dogs who are physically restricted in their movements. And it’s a wonderful way for us to engage our dogs, and help wear out the brain battery, while we aren’t maybe as mobile or energetic as we wish we were.

I do recommend laying the track in the yard early in the morning , or even in preference in the front yard where there is less conflicting “Traffic” smells. Doing them indoors will pose difficult challenges in combating the every day smells vs the track smells.

Have you ever thought about using tracking circles to enrich your dog’s learning?
