Snow day!!! Does your dog enjoy the snow?
Here are some tips to ensure your dog enjoys the wintery wonderland:
🐶Make sure you clean your dog's paws and bellies thoroughly when you get home from your winter walkies - grit from the roads and dampness from rain or snow can irritate their skin.
🐶 Make sure they are wearing a collar with a tag with up to date contact information, just in case they get carried away on snow day adventures.
🐶Avoid anti freeze - it is highly poisonous.
🐶Don't let your dog walk on any frozen bodies of water - the ice can be thinner than you think!

Remember! Only dress your pet up if they are comfortable with it this Halloween! 🎃

This was Lilly in her Halloween pjs last year. Lilly wears a jumper and a coat in a similar style to keep her warm and clean on muddy walks so she was mostly ok with this suit!
But after a while we could tell she was getting agitated so we quickly removed it.

If you really want to dress your pet up, make it a fun and rewarding experience and keep it as quick as possible! The more simple the costume the better so it can be quickly put on and removed!

Remember the signs that your pet is getting uncomfortable! Some of those include:
-Stiff body language
-Lip licking
-Yawning
-Whale eye
- Rolling around, trying to remove the costume!

Muscat dog adoption is an amazing charity based in Muscat Oman where I grew up. I’ve seen myself first hand how much these dogs can suffer out on the streets, many are abused and even shot. MDA have a mammoth job, they take in what dogs they can into their farm or foster homes, paying for their expensive veterinary care, food and upkeep and try to rehome these beautiful souls. They have limited space and even more limited funds. It may seem like a far away problem to many of us in the UK but dogs don’t know what borders or nationalities are. My Lilly is from Oman but was lucky enough to spend most of her time in a lovely boarding kennels before I adopted her, many don’t know this luxury. If anyone has a spare few £s to send to help keep their vital farm up and running, the volunteers and these beautiful dogs will really appreciate it ❤️

Sniffing is so beneficial to dogs, it slows their heart rate, reduces anxiety, releases feel good endorphins, mentally stimulates them and so much more.
It can also be great for us too though! Letting your dog's nose lead the way reminds us to slow down and take in all the benefits of being out, enjoying walks with our best friends.
You may also find that your dog is a lot more tired after a walk spent sniffing than a run around the park.

Clicker training can be a great help to train some really precise behaviours, BUT it takes some skill and practice and the clicker must never be used for any other purpose such as getting the dog's attention as this can lead to confusion amongst other issues. It is also worth noting that for some dogs the sound of the click can be frightening or startling so it isn't a 'one size fits all' technique. Having worked with many dogs that display “reactive” behaviour, I know they can be massively misunderstood but they deserve lots of compassion and love ❤️ remember never to punish these behaviours! There is always a reason behind it!

In scientific terms Positive Reinforcement is a quadrant of operant conditioning learning theory. Positive means we add something to a situation Reinforcement means we increase the frequency of a behaviour. We reward behaviours when we want them to happen more often! For example: giving a dog a treat when they sit on cue, the dog will then associate this tasty treat with sitting on cue which means they are more likely to do it again! Reinforcement is a lot more powerful than punishment. It’s a kinder more ethical way of training that only strengthens our relationship with our dogs and can be an enjoyable experience for everyone if done correctly! #dogtraining #positivereinforcementdogtrainer #ethicaldogtraining
