Canine Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes the dog to have sudden, uncontrolled, recurring physical attacks, with or without loss of consciousness. If left untreated, the seizures may become more severe and frequent. Seizures usually occur while the dog is resting or asleep, most frequently at night or in early morning. Once the seizure begins, typical symptoms experienced may incl
ude stiffening of the body, chomping of the jaw, salivating profusely, urinating, defecating, and vocalizing, and/or paddling with all four limbs. These seizure activities generally last between 30 and 90 seconds. Behavior following the seizure may include periods of confusion and disorientation, aimless wandering, compulsive behavior, blindness, pacing, increased thirst, and increased appetite. Recovery following the seizure may be immediate, or it may take up to 24 hours. Emfit Canine Seizure Monitor
The limbs paddling or "running in place" is the primary movement detected by the Emfit monitor, and alarm will trigger if these movements continue past the preset delay of 13 seconds. Delay reduces chance of false alarms occurring due to other types of fast movement, such as scratching. As the Emfit Canine Seizure Monitor will alert to seizure activity just moments after it has begun, it allows the pet owner to administer necessary aid. For nighttime use there is sound notification to wake up the owner. A text message notification is also available to a cellular phone for use case scenario where pet is alone in daytime in a cradle. We are developing a vest as, of course, most dogs do not stay in a cradle during daytime when the owner is at work. The monitor records heart rate, breathing rate and movement activity through the rest/sleep period and sends data in real time to Emfit server. Data is sent using a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet. Data is accessible online with a web application. For more information, please email us [email protected].
