It works the dog both mentally and physically on a regular basis. Not only that, but it’s also a great way to socialise for dogs and owners. All breeds, sizes and shapes of dog can take part. So by far the most important behaviour you can teach a dog is a reliable recall!
If you want to give your dog the freedom of running off leash it's a super simple thing to teach, but it's long, and involves a lot of proofing!
The hugely important factor to recall that people completely miss out is where it all begins! Which is on a leash!
If your dog can't behave itself on leash, then how can you expect it to do so off a lead when it has access to the entire world!
Fundamentally recall boils down to one huge component... engagement. If your dog finds value in engaging with you over the stimulus of what's around it then it becomes super easy to teach this as a behaviour!
Where most people go wrong is they set their dog up to fail! Letting it off a leash or a longline with no safety net!
And when they shout "COME" (and the dog doesnt) the dog learns that if they don't come back, they can continue to self reward and have a great time without you!
So they learn to ignore the command and it becomes completely useless!
You have to be more valuable than squirrels, dogs, people, bikes and literally everything in your dogs environment before you even think of letting it off a lead and have made sure that you have spent the time proofing the behaviour in absolutely lots of different environments! Need my help? We are running recall classes every Friday @chelsfieldequestriancentre at 10am, 11am and 12pm. www.pawsitivedogservices.com
