Photos on this page can not be used without written permission of Project Pearl. Founded in September 2011, Project Pearl received our 501(c)(3) non-profit in April 2013. Our mission began in 2011 by supporting Forsyth County Animal Control (FCAC) with photography by creating the "Lend a Lens" program in which professional photographers donate their services. Project Pearl also provides outreach f

or shelter animals through social media and sponsorships. Our medical foster program, which has helped over 500 animals, provides medical care to animals that are not eligible at the time of intake for the county adoption program due to medical. Animals are transferred to Project Pearl's ownership and receive life saving medical care. Once they are healthy, they go into our adoption program. Additionally, we have donated a great deal of our finances to low-income, community spay/neuter. Since October 2011 we have helped increase adoptions by nearly 30%. Project Pearl believes that community-wide education results in better population control, lower stray intakes and reduces owner surrenders. Our organization was created to help and support our local shelter. We encourage sharing our photos, however downloading and printing photos that are someone else's Intellectual Property (I/P)/copyright is illegal. If there is a photo you would like a copy of, you need to seek permission from the owner by emailing: [email protected]

Whether the photo was taken by a volunteer, professional photographer or someone posting an adoption update, you must have permission and we are more than happy to put you in touch with the photos actual owner. In mid August 2017, we discontinued our "Lend a Lens" program for FCAC in order to focus on our growing medical foster program. On average, we spend roughly $500-$1500+ on every animal in our program. Donations are greatly appreciated for our medical foster program. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of former Project Pearl foster Cupcake, who gained her wings yesterday.

From Melissa:

I remember the day Cupcake came to the shelter in 2012. We were in the middle of a photo session, which of course halted when shelter staff showed us a scared, very overweight, but delightful little dog, who was owner surrendered. She passed evaluation, but because of her obesity, needed medical attention.

So, she got her photo that morning and left with foster mom extraordinaire Stacie, who was already fostering another PP dog (that's how we rolled!).

Cupcake was lovingly cared for, introduced green beans (her favorite) to her diet, started going for walks with her dog friends and got her weight down from 18 to 9 pounds! Cupcake was one of a kind and she was one of my favorites - even though you really had to watch your fingers giving her green beans! 😉

Thank you to my dear, dear friend Stacie for giving her the best, second chance life. Rest in peace sweet CC. xoxo

One of our most beloved former foster dogs, Khaleesi, crossed the rainbow bridge today.

She joined our medical foster program in May 2014 when she required an eye enucleation. She was loved dearly by her foster family and ultimately by her forever family, who were dedicated PP volunteers.

Thank you Maddie Austin and Mikey Austin for giving her the best life, filled with endless love and bloodhound adventures! Sending you both lots of love. 💕

11 years ago today I met a sweet shelter dog named Pearl who was looking for a loving home. One photo I took in the FCAC parking lot changed her life and she found her family, who loved her fiercely.

That photo in turn, changed the life of thousands of animals, but it also changed the life of many people, too. It brought people together, brought out their kindness and open hearts. And above all, it made lasting friendships and memories.

Over the years, I have heard from so many adopters about how their pets are doing and also shared in their grief of saying goodbye to sick or elderly pets. And, like it was yesterday, I always have in my mind (and on my computer), the photo, that connected an animal and their family. And for a moment, tears turn into a smile.

So, with that - Happy Pearl Day! Feel free to share your "Pearl" story & photo!

XOXO Melissa
