Have we mentioned how much foster dog Rocky loves to play with other dogs?! He'd really enjoy a home with a playmate! His patient friend Jay isn't always up to playing but as you can see Rocky is very understanding. 😉
Help us spread the word & stop by Saturday to meet this fun-loving and entertaining Rocky!
A break from crate rest to roll around in the grass with a toy.
Foster dog Rocky is energized by the Olympics and is adding a new competition to the winter games: stair crawling. 🥇
Rocky was neutered this week & will start heartworm treatment in a few weeks. He's an entertaining, loving, smart and handsome 1-year old!
❤️❤️❤️
Rocky never lived inside prior to entering our foster program. He has a creative technique to stairs. He'll be neutered tomorrow and once recovered, will start heartworm treatment.
2017 Medical Foster Program
2017 is nearing an end and although we squeaked in one last emergency vet visit, I'm pretty sure we're in the clear for adding new medical cases!
With over 100 animals in our program, 2017 was our biggest year helping medical cases and we're ready to expect the unexpected in 2018.
Many, many thanks to our amazing and dedicated foster families, veterinary family, groomers, photographers, volunteers and donors!
To make a year-end donation (you still have time!!!), please follow this link or start your New Year off with a tax-deductible donation!

Jingles
Over the past week, the shelter received numerous calls and people stopping by to get updates concerning the welfare of a stray, hit by car, that is now our newest medical foster, Jingles. Due to extended stray hold in conjunction with the holidays, he was unable to be transferred to our organization until this morning - however we've been paying for his medical care since last week. Many reached out directly to FCAC and posted on social media that they'd like to help with his medical costs, this is your chance!
Jingles is still being monitored by our vets and once he's more stable, he'll be moved into foster care. He has abrasions from his ears to his paws from being hit by a car; has a fractured pelvis and he has an acetabular fracture (a break in the socket portion of the "ball-and-socket" hip joint), which is typical of 12% of pelvic fractures.
Please consider making a 100% tax-deductible, end-of-year donation to Jingles medical care. He is our third hit by car this month.

Thank you!
❤️ Norah
Norah, a 1-year old JRT, was found laying under a bridge, hit by a car. She has a fractured pelvis, acetabular fracture (a break in the socket portion of the "ball-and-socket" hip joint) and multiple abrasions. She is resting comfortably at this time and on pain medication. As you can see by her wagging tail, she is very happy to be the newest Project Pearl medical foster!
Please consider making an end-of-year donation to help with our growing medical program.

Greer!
We've had a challenging time with Greer's meals & due to being diagnosed with perianal fistula (common in Shepherds), had to change her diet using a novel protein source.
Many thanks to Aristopets for donating food for Greer today! We're really grateful for all the community support and her foster family was thrilled to see her eat it up tonight.
Foster Kitten!
Newest medical foster has two front leg deformities. He's being cared for and observed tonight by the vet (Thank you Dr. Henderson) & will determine his needs tomorrow.
Peace, Love, Project Pearl
It’s been an incredible six years for Project Pearl and although animal welfare is an extremely emotional field, Project Pearl’s medical foster program has been one of my greatest accomplishments. To those that have fostered, volunteered, donated, supported and adopted – I cannot thank you enough. Throughout the years we have transformed and given second chances to hundreds of animals and for that, I am beyond grateful.
Though there have been changes over the past few months, Project Pearl’s mission remains: to help those animals that require life saving medical care. Running a medical foster program is challenging and practically every case has unexpected needs, some require emergency care and on occasion, we experience loss. An incredible will and devotion emerges from animals that were once hopeless. Our goal has always been to give animals a quality, happy and healthy life.
I’m always touched when donations are made in honor or memory of a person or pet. Many times I’m able to connect with the donor by reading lovely, heartfelt cards that openly express stories of love. Learning about a deceased spouse, a child’s birthday or lemonade stand or a veterinarian honoring a client that passed away. Finding the right words to comfort is difficult, but the simplest gesture can have the most meaningful impact.
For many it’s been a difficult year, with loss and sadness. My family said goodbye to four of our dogs this past year. Monday I lost my dog Freyr to cancer. A medical foster I adopted in 2015, he was incredibly special and stoic. Even though he was sick, he loved his daily walks, was always happy, disregarded daylight savings time and never let us forget when it was time to eat!
Driving to the vet for his scheduled surgery, he did his typical antics: flipped the blankets around with his nose, moving them to his perfection and laid with his head staring at me. Before entering the building, he happily smiled and I snapped a photo. In the room,
Welcome Lida!
Today we welcomed Lida to the Project Pearl medical foster program. We are currently awaiting bloodwork results to determine if Lida is emaciated from neglect or has EPI. Very common in Shepherds, Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) is when part of the pancreas that produces digestive enzymes no longer functions properly. As a result, the dog can't digest its food. With all our medical cases, we try to balance realism and optimism. Once Lida's blood results are back, we will work with our vet to determine a treatment plan. Lida has a very long road ahead and we welcome and appreciate donations for her medical care. Donations can be made by following this link: http://projectpearlnc.org/support-us/
Run, Frazier, Run! Having only one eye doesn't slow this puppy down! Stitches out Friday & then updated photos with Kristin Deavers Photography!
The Dixie Chicks are taking song requests. Busy day seeing the vet, first dose of medications, bathed, fluffed, fed AND this smart trio are using their potty pads!
Our foster puppies are doing great & we'll be having a sneak peek meet & greet this Saturday!
Foster dog Pip!
Meet little Pip, a calm and polite 10-year old Chihuahua-Dachshund mix.
From her foster family:
"Pip loves to follow someone around and then sit and watch the world go by. She is deaf, which means that she prefers to be touched, rather than called, when you need to get her attention. Fortunately, it also means she doesn't react when she hears other dogs bark! In fact, while she occasionally makes a little "squeak" to get your attention, we have not yet heard her bark at all.
Like many older dogs, Pip's vision is not as strong as it might have been in the past, which makes it difficult for her to navigate up and down stairs, so she needs to be carried. At only 10 pounds, though, she is easy to pick up, and she enjoys being carried "football style", tucked into someone's arm. In fact, we have nicknamed her "Nerf" because she settles right in to being carried that way.
Pip is completely potty trained, and likes to be outside. She has great energy, and while one of her favorite hobbies is finding the most comfy spots to sleep, when she goes outside she likes to run around a bit, hopping through the grass like a bunny.
Pip does not have teeth, so she eats canned food. She has a great appetite, and looks forward to meal times! Because of her lack of teeth, her little tongue sticks out when she's relaxed. Pip would be a great pet for someone seeking a quiet companion, and who can accommodate her special needs and enjoy her playful nature. Pip is excellent with other dogs, being very friendly and gentle with them."
