Asking what you have done to prepare your dog for fireworks is not shaming you. Many trainers choose to avoid the difficult subjects and cater to your personal feelings and the same anthropomorphic ideals you place on the dog.
The fireworks question is a serious question and one that I ask every year. Many trainers want to coddle their clients as much as the client does their dog.
Sorry, but that’s not us and never will be. If your dog needs medicinal help for this weekend so be it. Some dogs will need that assistance. The majority need you to teach it how to handle the stresses of life. Yes, it takes work but it is not about the fireworks it is about the training relationship you have overall with your dog. Fireworks are just an additional stimulus that you can work to overcome or lessen the impact of through real dog training.
I speak with many folks in the veterinary field. They overwhelmingly tell me that clients come in every year asking for meds for this time of year. They don’t ask how do we address the behavior for a therapy/training point of view first.
So while we are not shaming anyone we do ask the hard questions that others avoid.
If you look at it all from a therapy vs medicine or therapy and medicine angle it makes sense that a medicine first angle is a failure on your part. Raising a dog is full of failures but we should not give up before we even try and it is our responsibility to them to do more.
