Volunteers of The White County Animal Shelter County Shelter for White County, Sparta, TN. This page is monitored and updated by volunteers. The shelter staff can be reached at 931-761-3647.

We are a very small dog only shelter in rural middle TN. Our primary focus is the intake of stray dogs and we try to reunite them with their family. On the occasions that their family can’t be found, or if the family is not interested in reclaiming their pet, we do all we can to find adoptive homes for them or place them with approved rescues. We will take owner surrenders when space allows, you w

ill be required to pay a $50.00 fee to surrender your pet. As with all rural shelters in economically depressed areas, our adoption numbers aren’t very high so we strive to work with as many rescues as we can and we are always looking for more wonderful volunteers to help out the fur kids! Adopting a friend

Our adoption fees are $250.00. This fee includes the following

Full Physical Exam
Sterilization Surgery
Pain Injection w/Laser Treatment
Fecal Test
Heartworm Test
Rabies Vaccination (If old enough at time of surgery)
Therapeutic Ear Cleaning

ABSOLUTELY NO ADOPTED ANIMAL LEAVES THE SHELTER UNALTERED

The pull fee for approved rescues will be reflective of the vetting a dog has received while at the shelter. Rescues do not need to be 501c3 to work with us!! We are not affiliated with any rescue or shelter, however we do work with Rescues in order to save as many dogs from euthanasia as possible. We are not a No-Kill Shelter, although we try to place as many dogs possible with adopters and rescues.

Monday is a holiday and the shelter dogs still need to get out. If anyone is available Monday morning, the dogs would love to take you for a walk!!! We start at 8:00am and with enough feet on the ground, we can get them all out by noon, so PLEASE consider spending the morning with us at 5600 Gum Springs Mountain Road! Every dog that you walk is a huge help and much appreciated. DRESS WARM!
NOTE: First time volunteers need to go through a brief orientation before walking dogs. The best time for first time volunteers to be there is between 9:00am and 11:00am but we will do our best to accommodate your availability. (Please remember that the shelter generally closes at 3:00pm and dogs remain in their pens after 2:30pm.)
FYI: Parents and legal guardians must accompany children under the age of 18 and complete a liability form prior to walking shelter dogs.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Chapter 1-Meet Tank the shelter dog. Tank is an amazing dog who got overlooked for almost a year. Why? This boy had two strikes against him, he was big and he was black, two characteristics that most people don't typically look for. Though Tank didn't pass the cute little dog test, he never gave up trying to win someone's heart.
Then came November 2024 when an amazing couple decided they were ready to adopt a companion for their big, beautiful senior dog Jax. They brought Jax to the shelter to see how those two big boys got along, and all systems were go! Tank finally got the chance he deserved! That boy jumped in the back seat of his new family's car, flopped over on his back and snuggled right up against his new mama! If a picture says a thousand words, I can end this story right here. But there's more.

Chapter 2-Shortly after Tanky found his forever home, Jax's life came to an end. As he laid down peacefully breathing his last breaths, Tank was snuggled up next to his new step-brother, providing comfort, and as Jax approached his final breath, Tank rested his head on the belly of his buddy until his heart became still.
Though the loss of 14-year-old Jax was heartbreaking to his family, Tanky was the blessing that softened the blow of their loss.

Chapter 3- (Fast forward a few weeks) Tanky's new family had decided to adopt another fur baby after the loss of their beloved Jax, hoping that Tank and a new little sister would bond. And bond they did! Tanky immediately became the best big brother little Bella could ever have hoped for! They effortlessly became inseparable playmates and snuggle buddies. Big boy Tank has been living the dream he'd had since he was brought into the shelter as a stray in November of 2023. He's been blessed with a two-legged momma and daddy, along with a small collection of four-legged fur babies, (both feline and canine) who idolize this big, beautiful, black, gentle giant!

Thanks to WCAS for not terminating Tank's life and for allowing him an extended stay at the county shelter. And thanks be to God for bringing joy into our lives with countless beautiful, innocent fur babies, both big and small.

This post was copied and pasted. Thank you, Kim! It definitely takes a village.

Writing this from my heart as a sincere genuine plea for our homeless animals in White Co & surrounding areas like Smithville.

I do NOT work for the White Co animal shelter. I am between 2 hip surgeries. With that said, my body doesn't work great but my mouth still does.

White Co Animal Shelter is in desperate need of volunteers! That means the dogs are in NEED of their village to come fwd and help. If you can't walk dogs, then can you donate supplies, or to the vet they use. Can you foster an animal in need for a short time or even a long time. Do you have a teen that would be willing to help why you supervise?

Last I heard, they do not have weekend commited volunteers to walk the dogs. What does that mean for the dogs? They need your help, it's that easy!

There is so many different ways we can help without it costing us too much of ourselves.

I called on a few churches today to ask them to help via phone.

To be honest, Life Church-Sparta is the only one that made me feel like I was being heard. It says it in the Bible to care for all of God's creatures, not just ourselves. As many churches as there is in the Bible Belt, I'd love to see them step up and really show the love I know they can. 🙏
