Adopting a pet? Congrats! You've just picked someone up in your car who isn't great at communicating, just got out of a tough situation, and isn't sure if they trust you yet. Sound familiar? That's because the first three days with a new pet are basically a 72-hour first date.

It's exciting, it's awkward, and it's definitely not the time to start planning your holiday cards or giving them a bubble bath.

No judgment, but some of y'all might need a quick refresher on first-date etiquette. So here's your official guide to early red flags (from you, not them).

🚩 Leaving them unattended like it's no big deal
Imagine showing up to a blind date and immediately getting ditched at a party where you know no one. That's how your pet feels when they're left alone right away.

Bottom line: Don't ghost your new pet. It's day one. Stick close.

🚩 Being too handsy
They're cute. You're smitten. But this isn't the moment for kisses, cuddles, or TikToks with voiceovers. You just met. They don't know your intentions yet.

This isn't a fling; it's the start of something real. Let them come to you. (Consent matters, even in pet parenting.)

🚩 Introducing them to your entire cast of characters
You ever meet someone and they immediately want you to meet their mom? Yikes.

Your pet doesn't need to meet your whole social circle (or animal crew) right away. Let them settle in, one face at a time. Save the group hangs for later.

🚩 Giving them a bath
You wouldn't give someone you just met a bath, and if you would… we don't want to talk about this anymore.

Yes, shelter pets can be a little stinky. But baths are a lot. They're wet, stressful, and weirdly intimate for a pet who doesn't even know your hobbies yet. Spritz some pet-safe essential oils around the house and give them time to decompress before sudsing them up.

🚩 Taking them on a spontaneous adventure
You are not on The Bachelor. No one wants a surprise helicopter ride on day one.

Keep things calm and close to home. No breweries, dog parks, or road trips. Your pet's just trying to figure out which room has the snacks, don't make them learn a whole new location yet.

🚩 Expecting instant love
Some folks swipe right, go on one date, and expect sparks to fly immediately. The same energy applies to new pet parents who expect instant attachment.

Sometimes it does happen, but more often, it's a slow burn. They might hide under the bed, bark at the fridge, or side-eye you for three days straight. It doesn't mean it's not working. It just means you're still getting to know each other.

💘 The Bottom Line: Love doesn't always strike like lightning. Sometimes, it starts with awkward silences, side-eyes, and mutually agreeing that you won't make any sudden moves. But give it time, stay patient, and keep showing up, and you just might find yourself in the best relationship of your life.

In loving memory of Carmine aka Red 💔😢

Yesterday one of our permanent fosters crossed the rainbow bridge. Carmine lovingly known as Red, was a handsome Red Golden Retriever. He was an owner turn in and at the time he entered the rescue (December 2024), he was recovering from a recently fractured ulna. He also had a huge mass under his belly. We took him in, removed the mass and unfortunately it came back as hemangiosarcoma which is an aggressive cancer and goldens are the poster child for getting this type of cancer.

The medical team decided he would be permanent foster where all of his care would be paid for by the rescue and he would live out his life with one of our fosters. They began fostering Red prior to his diagnosis and lovingly agreed to be his permanent fosters and give him all the love and cuddles he could ask for. Red received physical therapy from Canine Rehabilitation of Orange County (CROC) for his healing ulna and many volunteers provided transport for him. They all became "Team Red," making sure he was getting to his PT appointments.

As time progressed, little bumps started to pop up that would bleed incessantly. This was cancer. "Team Red" made sure he made it to his vet appointments as well. Throughout the surgeries, the poking and prodding, Red always would paw at you and want to climb in your arms for love and always had a great attitude.

Yesterday his foster noticed a bleeding mass under his arm, and we took him to the vet. He had labored breathing and the mass wouldn't stop bleeding. X-rays were taken and that’s when we learned that the hemangiosarcoma had infiltrated his entire body, allowing for his lungs to operate at a reduced capacity. It is never an easy decision to make, but we made the decision to ease Red's pain and discomfort and helped him cross the rainbow bridge. A couple of our volunteers fed him hershey's kisses which he loved and petted him and loved on him the whole time as he peacefully passed. He was surrounded by love and care and we are deeply grateful for his amazing fosters for providing Red with a safe, warm, and loving home.

Although his time with us was far too short, Red knew kindness, comfort and companionship and hershey kisses 😉 -- thanks to the unwavering dedication of our foster community.

Losing a dog is never easy, and it reminds us why the work each of our volunteers is so important. Every walk, every meal, every cuddle—these moments matter, and they change lives, even if just for a little while.

Please take a moment to hold Red in your thoughts today. Run free Red and we will see you again at the rainbow bridge!!!

Last night we had a group of volunteers gather in Irvine to enjoy OC Riptide’s Bark in the Park night and it was incredibly fun and all the dogs loved it too!

All OC Riptide home games at the Great Park are dog friendly so you can bring your dog to any of those games all Summer long.

Plenty of parking, a great stadium and very affordable to take the whole family out. A hot dog, fresh popped popcorn and a soda $8…can’t beat that. They also had barbecue (ribs, pulled pork, brisket, chicken and all the sides) plus they had their own version of pupcups- roasted unseasoned chicken over plain white rice.

Because it was Bark in the Park night they had free traditional Puppacinos! Also a “Who can eat a puppacino the fastest” contest.

Best of all you can watch SCGRR alumni Omaha the Bat Dog do her thing on the field. So impressive and fun to watch. Plus everyone had a chance to meet Omaha and take photos with her.

General admission tickets start at $5, there are also Reserved and Premium seats as well (all under $15) - really there are no bad seats in the house and they are all dog friendly. Kids 12 & under are free - so are your dogs.

Don’t worry there is one more Bark in the Park night on July 19, 7:00pm.

Check it out. Come to a game or 2 or 3 or more. Be sure to use code SCGRR and $2 of every ticket purchase is donated to us - we also receive a percentage of any season ticket purchases.

Pupdate: Mia FKA Minky from Korea

Mia was brought in from a Korean rescue in June-2023. Now, two years later, she is living her dream life with Tim and Alli. When Mia (fka Minky) was in her foster home, she was frightened and nervous on walks, meeting new people and just plain shy as heck. Our amazing foster Ann brought this sweet 3 year old Korean rescue out of her shell. As hard as it was for Ann to let Minky go, we agreed she would have a rich and full life with Alli and Tim.

Mia recently trekked Horseshoe Lake in Mammoth.

Mia is a Goodwill Ambassador on the Palos Verdes Reserve trails where Tim guides regular hikes.

Alli says, "Mia is a thriving, sweet, happy and healthy dog! She enriches our lives a million fold!".

We love getting updates about the dogs we rescue! So happy for Mia and her family living their best lives together!

Sammy has been adopted

Sammy was an owner turn-in on 4/27 at a whopping 97 pounds. Sammy proved to be a very spunky and fun 6 year old who loved to hump his new friends! This didn't go well with his first Meet and Greet and the kids did not enjoy this type of affection.

After that less than perfect Meet and Greet, we pivoted and reached out to a lovely couple with no kids to mount. Sammy never even tried to jump on them as they were so calm and quiet and knelt down to his level to engage with him. Funny thing was the owner who gave him up said he hated going in the car and got car sick. Sammy has been PERFECT in the car and jumped right into his adopters car without a second hesitation.

We have received updates that he is settling in and enjoying his yard, toys and neighborhood walks. He even got a wonderful backyard bath.

Happy Tails Sammy!
