The Value of Play

Play is fun.
Play comes from within. Children love to play.
Play is an important part of healthy development.
Play is enjoyable and doesn’t need careful planning, or an end result.
Play means active involvement, not just watching.
During play, the child sets the rules, and there is no right or wrong way to play.
During play children practise physical skills and learn about their bodies.
They learn to use their imagination.
They learn about their own feelings and the feelings of others.
They learn about the world around them using all five senses.
Play is the work of children!

Through play children learn:

To explore materials
To be creative
To use language
To share (maybe!)
To make decisions
To test possibilities
To estimate
To concentrate
and so much more!

Children need the time to explore and learn through play – by playing alone, with other children, and with you. Each of these relationships are important!

Engage with nature by making a simple pinecone bird feeder craft! All you need is a few pinecones, some peanut butter, bird seed, and string. Spread peanut butter on a pinecone, roll it in birdseed, and use the string to hang it outside where you can keep watch. It’s fun for the family to experience the creation process and later observe the birds together. It also helps the winter birds find a protein-packed snack!

Warm up your winter kitchen with this easy farm-inspired treat: honey cinnamon roasted carrots!

Cut carrots into strips and toss with a drizzle of honey, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a pinch each of salt and corn starch. Roast the carrots on a tray at 400°F for 20-25 minutes. Perfect for sweet and savory side dish to go along with dinner or makes a great after school snack!

Everyone should spend time mindfully connecting to nature. Make it a point to embrace an outdoor adventure this week and get outside with the kids!

When it’s too cold to be outside, bring the farm indoors with a seed-starting project! Kids can learn about plant life cycles by germinating seeds in repurposed toilet paper tubes or small pots on a sunny windowsill. Some great options to start now are leafy greens, herbs, onions, tomatoes, and brassicas. It’s a great hands-on lesson in patience and care!
