Colorado friends please vote NO on Proposition 129.
This proposal will allow for unregulated and low quality care of your animals.

“For example, it would require a job-specific master’s degree even though there is currently no accredited program in the country that could confer such a degree. There’s also no recognized test to certify such practitioners nor a national regulatory standard by which they could be tested.”
“Even more troubling, the proposal would allow the associates to perform veterinary procedures including surgery — after only a pale imitation of the training a doctor of veterinary medicine receives. “
The proposal is only including ONLINE training to perform surgery on animals.

As a vet of almost 8 years I believe this to be absurd. Please vote no and put your animals first. The 7-8 years of in person hands on training your vet has gone through cannot be condensed into a few years of staring at a computer screen.

If you haven’t seen it yet, The Denver Gazette has taken a powerful stance against Proposition 129! Their editorial sends a clear message: Colorado’s animals deserve the best care possible, and Prop. 129 falls short.

I had a blast being a part of “Day on the Farm” again this year! Teaching the third graders about pulling calves and keeping our livestock healthy is such a blessing! (And hilarious too- kids say the darnedest things)

Update---
Sweet Maggie ate a NERF BALL!
The ball was stuck in her intestines at her surgery site from 2021. We were able to move it back to her stomach to allow for easier surgical removal.
So happy we were able to help her again! 🐾

Anybody ready for a WHAT DID YOU EAT Wednesday????!

This sweet dog has been in our care once before, for an exploratory surgery in 2021 and unfortunately presented again last month for similar symptoms again.
We wasted no time and rushed straight to imaging. Take a look below and comment with your guess! What did she eat?!?

In these X-rays you will see that she ate something that has made it impossible for anything to move out of her stomach- so it is very dilated and pushing on the rest of her digestive tract.
But what is it?!?

Attention! Despite new findings of Avian Influenza in dairy cows, the meat supply AND the milk supply are safe to consume. Farmers and veterinarians are continuously working hard to ensure you have a safe product every day.
Eat, drink and be happy :)

Myth busting Monday!!

Springtime = vaccine time!

How do animals (or people) get exposed to tetanus? (Aka Lockjaw)
Many people know the rule of thumb that if an animal has a wound, their tetanus vaccine needs boostered. But WHY is this?
Often times I hear people speak about tetanus only in relation to rusty nails or metal. —- Truth? Or myth???

Do you only need to give a vaccine if the wound was made with a piece of old rusty metal? 💉💉
Do you give a tetanus vaccine at time of castration only if the band you are using has a piece of metal on it??💉💉

Tetanus (Clostridium tetani) is a bacteria that lives in the soil, and all animals are at risk of infection- despite if there is exposure to old metal or not.

Some animals are more resistant to the bacteria - such as dogs and cats. And other animals are extremely sensitive to the infection such as horses, sheep, goats and cattle.

The bacterial spores grow in deep puncture wounds- especially wounds that provide little oxygen- such as when you band a calf, lamb or kid.

Tetanus is rare in humans (thanks to routine vaccination) BUT we still see it on occasion in our farm animals. Please remember to give a tetanus vaccine when you are castrating or banding your lambs, goats and calves!!

26/03/2024

The "mysterious illness" affecting dairy cattle in the Midwest has been identified as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus in laboratory samples obtained from some affected cows.

Please remember there is NO current risk to our food supply and it is routine practice for operations to process milk from sick animals separate from milk intended for consumption.

"Both state and federal agencies are moving quickly to conduct additional testing for HPAI, including viral genome sequencing, to better understand the current situation, and the AVMA is working closely with the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP), veterinarians, and state and federal officials in support of these efforts."

Continuing their investigation into a disease event affecting primarily older dairy cows in Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico, today the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the detection of highly patho...
