Myth busting Monday!!

Springtime = vaccine time!

How do animals (or people) get exposed to tetanus? (Aka Lockjaw)
Many people know the rule of thumb that if an animal has a wound, their tetanus vaccine needs boostered. But WHY is this?
Often times I hear people speak about tetanus only in relation to rusty nails or metal. —- Truth? Or myth???

Do you only need to give a vaccine if the wound was made with a piece of old rusty metal? 💉💉
Do you give a tetanus vaccine at time of castration only if the band you are using has a piece of metal on it??💉💉

Tetanus (Clostridium tetani) is a bacteria that lives in the soil, and all animals are at risk of infection- despite if there is exposure to old metal or not.

Some animals are more resistant to the bacteria - such as dogs and cats. And other animals are extremely sensitive to the infection such as horses, sheep, goats and cattle.

The bacterial spores grow in deep puncture wounds- especially wounds that provide little oxygen- such as when you band a calf, lamb or kid.

Tetanus is rare in humans (thanks to routine vaccination) BUT we still see it on occasion in our farm animals. Please remember to give a tetanus vaccine when you are castrating or banding your lambs, goats and calves!!

The "mysterious illness" affecting dairy cattle in the Midwest has been identified as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus in laboratory samples obtained from some affected cows.

Please remember there is NO current risk to our food supply and it is routine practice for operations to process milk from sick animals separate from milk intended for consumption.

"Both state and federal agencies are moving quickly to conduct additional testing for HPAI, including viral genome sequencing, to better understand the current situation, and the AVMA is working closely with the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP), veterinarians, and state and federal officials in support of these efforts."

Continuing their investigation into a disease event affecting primarily older dairy cows in Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico, today the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the detection of highly patho...

What did you eat Wednesday?!?!?!
This 1.5 year old dog visited Paola Vet Clinic because she wouldn't eat her food and was vomiting. We decided to give her a barium contrast to help us identify if she had eaten a foreign object and if she had, then the barium will also help identify where it is.

What do you think she ate?!

Bonus points: what else do you see? And how many???

What did you eat Wednesday?!?
This 1.5 year old dog came to visit our clinic after his family saw him eat an object a few days prior. Since that day he had been vomiting frequently and couldn't keep food or water down.

Sharing again my own advice from 6 years ago. Old news, but still really good to remember. It doesn't take long to throw an extra loop around the leg before you pull---but it does take a long time for a broken bone to heal.
Good luck! Happy calving!

Answer: The patient ate raw yeast dough.
Raw yeast ingestion is very dangerous for dogs and cats.
The raw yeast will ferment in the animal’s body resulting in ethanol and carbon dioxide production. This causes the animal to experience life threatening ethanol toxicity and bloat.
Symptoms include ataxia (wobbly/inability to stand), tremors, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, low body temp, respiratory depression, and stomach bloat with a potential to cause a twisted stomach (GDV).

In the radiographs from yesterday you can see the bubbly appearance of the small intestines which is a direct result of the fermentation process.

What Did You Eat Wednesday?!?
Warning- This case is a little different than the usual WDYEW.
A few weeks ago this sweet puppy presented to the clinic on emergency. He was unable to walk, very depressed, had a severely decreased body temperature and was minimally responsive. Luckily the owners knew exactly what toxic food he ate so we knew what treatment to start ASAP.

What do you think he ate?!
Answer to come tomorrow!

ANSWER: This sweet dog ate 2 Halloween stuffed toys in October and had no signs expect weight loss until her visit in July for vomiting.
One of the stuffed toys dislodged from the stomach and was stuck in the small intestine- which is what created a big issue in July.
We successfully removed both the pumpkin and witches hat with surgery. She recovered well and is the sweetest dog!
