In Loving Memory of Zeus
On December 26, 2023, our cherished canine companion, Zeus, embarked on his final journey, leaving an irreplaceable void in our hearts and a tapestry of cherished memories that will endure forever. Zeus, likely born in 2008, found his forever home with his devoted "mama," Amy, on April 14, 2009, at the King County Animal Shelter.
Originally named Auggie Doggie by the shelter staff, Zeus quickly outgrew that name, as his vibrant spirit and boundless energy demanded a stronger title. A dog of confidence and resilience, Zeus's endearing habit of non stop barking in the car created a symphony of joy, making each journey a memorable adventure. Car trips separate from other humans became a necessity, ensuring Zeus could share his exuberance without restraint.
He was not only Zeus, but also affectionately known as Goose, Zeusy Goose, Monster, Monkey Butt, Bebe, Rottenest, and the Monsta Monsta Does What He Wantsa Wantsa. He also held the distinguished title of Leader of the ZAK Pack.
Zeus was an amazing athlete. He loved to train with the Antifreeze Running Group, running in a pack as his sled dog genes had intended. Zeus enjoyed the thrill of competition in 5K races, winning 2nd place in the “Women With Dogs” category of the 2013 5K9 fundraiser. Had he not needed to stop to p**p at 2.9 miles, he may have finished first. Despite his warm soft fur, swimming was Zeus’s favorite sport. He could swim entirely across Greenlake towing his mama behind him in a swim tube. Once he swam for over an hour straight in Lake Bill on the Microsoft campus, refusing to come to shore and nearly making his mama late for a meeting.
Throughout his life, Zeus cultivated a canine community of friends, including Sandi, Kokua, Zooey, and his little Aunt PJ. He played a pivotal role in fostering other dogs, imparting wisdom, guiding puppies, helping shy dogs gain confidence, and displaying calm kindness to elderly dogs. On the shores of San Felipe, Mexico, Zeus's canine diplomatic prowess shone through, when he met the infamous and purportedly vicious alpha of the untamed beach dog pack, known as Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was captivated by Zeus, displaying great reverence and respect toward him.
Zeus became a pillar of strength during Amy's battle with cancer, offering comfort and support by holding her hand with his paws during her first chemotherapy treatment. When her last chemo treatment was complete, despite a year of daily walks with Grandpa, Zeus insisted on having Amy walk with him every day as part of her physical recovery.
Seattle was Zeus's home, where he embraced rainy days with joy, developed a taste for lattes and salmon, and lived the life of a true Pacific Northwest pup. His adventures extended far beyond the city limits, as he swam in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Gulf of California. Zeus was a seasoned traveler, exploring the mountains of Canada, the desert of the American Southwest and the beaches of Mexico, and reveling in the freedom of van life.
His time in Lake of the Ozarks during Amy’s cancer treatment was particularly special, where Zeus enjoyed the love and snacks bestowed upon him by his grandparents. Boat rides with Grandpa became cherished moments, creating memories of joy and companionship. Grandpa listened to his podcasts while Zeus barked enthusiastically at the waves.
In 2021, Zeus met his best human buddy, Kevin. With Kevin by his side, Zeus discovered the sheer thrill of finally being allowed to chase a skateboarder, turning a lifelong dream into a glorious adventure in a Phoenix skate park. The joyous moments shared between Zeus and Kevin became a testament to the profound connections that can form between humans and their loyal companions. This special friendship added an extra layer of happiness to Zeus's already vibrant life, leaving us with yet another cherished memory of our dear, adventurous friend.
Zeus faced his own battle with cancer with remarkable courage. A tumor on his paw found in February 2023 marked the beginning of his final journey, but he spent his last year embracing life to the fullest. From the scenic beauty of the Olympic Peninsula to the shore of Lake Chelan, and from the rugged landscapes of Montana to the heartland of Minnesota and Illinois visiting family, Zeus traveled far and wide, leaving paw prints on the hearts of everyone he met.
On Zeus’s final day, he walked the neighborhood he loved, smelling the grass and trees and plants and leaving his mark. Despite the mobility difficulty he had battled for months, he walked for miles, refusing to rest in the wagon. Zeus and his mama spent the final hours of Seattle sunshine on the shores of the Puget Sound at Golden Gardens where Zeus put his paws in the Salish Sea one last time. After returning home, Zeus, exhausted from the day but content, lay down in his bed, enjoying belly rubs and words of love from Amy and Kevin until his heart stilled.
Zeus's legacy lives on in the warmth of memories and the love he gave. More than a pet, he was a brave protector, a source of joy, a best friend, and an irreplaceable family member. As we bid farewell to our beloved friend, let us celebrate the rich tapestry of Zeus's life and the enduring love that connects us to our furry companion.
Rest in peace, sweet Zeus. You will be dearly missed, and your spirit will live on in our hearts.
