Rabbits ain’t got nothing on rats when it comes to breeding. 21 day gestation, 21 days of nursing, 3-4 months old for breeding.
Rats are another fun and quick way to have fun with genetics while still serving a purpose in the end (snake food).
Them little apricot looking ones are so cute.
38 pups out of 5 first time females
I’ll keep a male and 10 females out of this batch to grow the colony. End goal is 5 groups of 3 females, this would allow a schedule of babies to be born every week with females getting 2 weeks off in between weaning and birthing. Females will likely have a breeding life of 10-12 months before being cycled out with future generations

The marvel of losing a terrible baby coat.
I know which lines of mine have awful baby coat and molt into some of my best fur.
I also know which ones have awful baby fur and will always be awful. Lol.
My point is, it’s good to know your lines.

Wanted to come up with unique names for my first generation of sables. So I named them Kamala and Walz. lol. No, I’m not trying to be political. It’s just for fun. So relax 🧘

The two grow outs I kept from my accidental litter over the summer. Dad is a broken chestnut mini lop and mom is a regular furred, carrying Rex, brindled Amber. I thought these two were worth growing out. Especially the chestnut. I feel my mini lop heard needs loin most of all, and most that I see posted online seem to need it to so the chestnut here may do good things for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think she is brindled but I can’t tell for sure

I’m a little lost on what to do with these two. They aren’t great, but i dont know enough to say they are awful. I would say the younger litter with the same parents look much better but they are 6 weeks younger and I plan to show them, hopefully, into seniorhood. So I figure for now I’ll crave the desire to breed the mini lops by experimenting breeding the doe back to her dad, and the buck back to his mom. See if line breeding and odds fall in my favor.

I decided sometime in July to raise rats, again. Not my favorite thing to do because they smell and it’s a lot of work to keep up with them from not smelling. However, my ball python breeding program is growing, so it needs to be done. They are to picky of eaters to feed other prey items and make future buyers have to deal with nightmare eaters.
So the only way I was willing to do it if I was to keep them outside. We are probably going to have some learning curves around winter…but we got through the heat of the summer and now have a baby explosion of 38 rat pinkies. Half of those will be kept for furthering the rat breeding program and the other half will be food.
I could do the typical rat rack setup, as it’s extremly popular for a reason. But I decided to go a different approach. I’m building their enclosures out of clear tubs, with latching lids, and the tubs are 13” tall. Rat racks typically use black concrete tubs. The rats can’t see out. You can’t see in. (Except through the wire mesh on top of the tub) They are like 6” tall so the rats can barely stand. It’s obviously livable and functional as people breed like this all the time. However, I’m a smaller operation and I just wanted them to have better conditions. Which is why I went with clear tubs and taller tubs. Taking the lid off can be annoying but the tubs are escape proof which is WAY better then finding a rat who has chewed through the top of a concrete tub, gotten out, chewed water line, and now you have tubs filled with water and rats that have drowned.
Also going this route will allow me to have a couple tubs of cavies again too. I’ll get some at convention time.

Pictures is of a momma rat who is tired but still doing her job.
So as of now I’m raising rabbits, rats, quail, reticulated pythons, boa contactictors, and ball pythons. And cavies again in the near future. Next spring I will start on the chicken and turkey endevour.

Man…i just love this guy. His loin is growing by the day and filling in more and more. I love his color. His pattern. His fur, though a little long. I’m just smitten with him. Can’t wait to show him and have my reality checked hahaha
I definitely see places to improve but he feels like a really solid step in making a good tri buck for the herd.

I’m keeping my sable program very small because 1, I only like sable. I don’t care for himi or seal and 2, tri will always be number one focus and I’m not willing to give up a ton of holes for this project and 3, I think I can still make vast improvement with only one or two animals. Going to be culling crazy hard and the herd will reap the reward.
So I kept this one sable doe out of my F1 Cal/Rex Litter. I will breed her back to her sable Rex father. Hopefully I’ll get one or two, Rex furred, sable or seal that’s worth keeping and then likely my next step would be breeding back to a Cal or NZ.
Felt like this doe was a decent start for my first generation of sables ☺️

This buck looks so much like his momma with a slight bit of improvement. Don’t judge his lack of loin fullness strongly, he’s only 13 weeks and growing. That’s Buggatti at 5 months old. Very excited about this buck. Maybe future herd buck material.

I also got to bring Ferrari back home this weekend. He’s been at my friends barn since December, and he’s been well taken care of. He assisted me well last year to improve on bone and loin width and peak placement. Wish his loin carriage was a bit more over the hip, but he has plenty of good things about him. I’m excited to get him bred to some of his grand daughters.
Ferrari is a really compact dense muscled buck. He is 25% NZ 12.5% MR and 62.5% Rex. He’s AaBbCCddEej. And he makes pretty decent Rex fur as well ☺️

I got to bring this doe home this weekend! My friend who is a meat breeder and only works with my lines had this girl just sitting there doing nothing. He hasn’t been breeding because of life being life, and I was like she is just too good to not be used. Especially since she is brindled. Excited to use her.

Pretty satisfied with my brindle and tri grow outs right now. It’s not very many but still. There are some glaring faults but I’m happy to see improvement in the departments I focused on this year. I’m excited to get them to work come the end of the year.

Why Rex?

I started breeding rabbits early 2017 for the sake of producing clean and healthy feeders for my reticulated pythons. I quickly found that I was in love with the hobby. The rabbits were so fun to care for, and watch life happen on a constant basis. I found my rabbits to be a huge stress relief for myself. Around mid 2017 I decided I really wanted to get into showing rabbits, and I had already knew that I loved Rex rabbits. I had one as a pet for 6 years when i was a teenager. Their personality was personable and docile, and they had amazing unique features. Like their velvet like fur, and many many color options.

From here I had to choose what color variety I wanted to pursue. My favorite was castor, tri, and red. So over the course of the rest of 2017 i purchased the best Rex i could get my hands on from other show breeders. I now specifically work on Castor and Tri, and there are a lot of colors that pop up from time to time such as reds, amber, opals, torts, etc. My first official Rex litters, for potential show rabbits, was February 2018.

I have invested a lot of time in researching everything for this. From basic rabbit care, complex rabbit care for when they get hurt or ill, color genetics, what show rabbits should be, philosophy on line breeding, etc. To say that i love this hobby would be an understatement. There’s really not much about the hobby that I don’t enjoy, besides maybe the many people you run into that try and sale you something as one thing, however, they have no idea what they are actually talking about. That’s with any animals though!
