The Hiding Place

For the last 5.5 years, we have owned a 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup with an 8 foot bed. It’s a great truck for picking up compost, mulch, hauling all sorts of things. We bought it to share with friends and others—everyone likes to have a friend with a truck! It has been very handy for a lot of people.

Until now, it has only needed minimal repairs, but this week the transmission went out. It will need to be rebuilt or replaced, a roughly $3000 job which we are not in a position to afford.

Other than the transmission, it’s in excellent mechanical shape with only 160,000 miles. Most of its use is very local and only occasional, so not a lot of wear on the brakes.

We would really love to find another friend or family or organization who could keep this truck going and make it available for community use, or even a couple people who want to split the cost (which we would be open to as well). We’ll even let you park it in front of our house.

I went to the West Bank in 2013 on a delegation with Christian Peacemaker Teams because I wanted to learn how to be a peacemaker in my own context. At the time I knew little about the situation and history.

I think it’s very difficult to fully convey the magnanimity of oppression at work in that region until you go in person and visit with people whose very lives are restricted by this seemingly unmovable force that the west seems to embrace unconditionally. That truth in no way undermines the reality of antisemitism in the world and its manifestations particularly in Christian circles, especially in a kind of perverse obsession with Israel in many conservative movements, but often appearing in some more liberal/progressive circles.

When I got married, we asked friends to help us purchase these 2 5’x4’ paintings that now live in the main room of our house. They are a daily reminder of the life for many Palestinians that the US enables. Now as we have kids, they help us have solidarity with parents whose kids grow up to be viewed as terrorists, whose kids don’t know what it is to live on your family’s land.

I’ve been thinking about my trip to the West Bank and these paintings a lot these last few weeks. I feel powerless to do anything but add my voice to the multitudes who cry out in outrage for what is happening.
