Almost a year ago, we were getting ready to break ground on an idea we’d be working toward since fall 2019: a place to teach music, gather community, and live more fully into our values.

In the last year, we have had such an enormous sense of community and collaboration to see this come to completion. In addition to our incredible builders Blain and Dom from and architect (and founder of , where we found our stained glass windows) Jim Schulman, more than 50 people donated money, we received a grant from the county, and dozens of people came out for workshops to install straw bales and lime plaster. We made friends with someone who turns out is married to a professional stained glass artist and who was able to repair our stained glass pieces. Another friend helped us stain doors. It would be hard to name every one who came, but a shout out to for being at almost every single work day (and more!). We borrowed tools, shared meals, and much more. We literally couldn’t have built this without our community.

So thank you seems hardly adequate. Thank you to everyone who made this happen and we cannot wait to welcome you back into the space and hope to meet many more of you at the intersections of community, hospitality, sustainability, music, and spirituality. You are always welcome here. Look out for a party later in October, and then we hope to see many more new friends use the space too!

On the anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination, I’ve been thinking about him and another hero of mine, Peter Maurin, and their vision to create a beloved community. They saw the collapsing structures held up by white supremacy and capitalism and realized we cannot wait for the filthy rotten systems to liberate us. As we get closer to finishing our little sanctuary space, we look forward to its use to foster beloved community and build a new society in the shell of the old.

We are incredibly grateful for the approximately 20 people who came out between today, yesterday and last Friday. We knocked out our scratch coat of lime plaster with expert oversight from . Come join us for round 2 (which will go a bit faster) next Friday and Saturday.

8 volunteers came out today and knocked out a huge chunk of the 1st coat of lime plaster. We’ll be back at it tomorrow with . We’re still looking for a few more folks for next Friday or Saturday for the leveling coat—let us know if you want to join!

All have been installed! Despite driving rains on Wednesday, none of the previously stacked bales had to be replaced and we were able to finish putting the bales in. Next up is some trimming and then installing a metal lathe—think heavier duty chicken wire.

Straw bale stacking day: This system of installing straw bales as our primary insulation required stacking the bales between 2x4 studs, but the bales are meant to hug the studs, so it requires sawing notches where the studs will be and slotting the bales on top of each other similarly to how you might stack Lego blocks. We had to cut some bales to size and then re-tie them, and then go through and stuff loose straw wherever any gaps remained. Occasionally we made use of the Thor-like hammer (known as the Commander) to compact bales and bring them level. The goal is a very tight fit so that air and moisture cannot get in—which also makes it very flame retardant. 8 volunteers came out to help make this a fantastic day—about 2/3 of the stacking is now done.

Coming this fall to our backyard…🤞We are finally on the verge of building our music teaching studio and community space using and natural clay plaster as the primary building materials! We’re really excited to work with a local builder who specializes in this kind of sustainable construction. We’ll be hosting some workshops in the fall to install the bales and do the plastering, so let us know if you want to join! We should have exact dates very soon!

For the last 5.5 years, we have owned a 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup with an 8 foot bed. It’s a great truck for picking up compost, mulch, hauling all sorts of things. We bought it to share with friends and others—everyone likes to have a friend with a truck! It has been very handy for a lot of people.

Until now, it has only needed minimal repairs, but this week the transmission went out. It will need to be rebuilt or replaced, a roughly $3000 job which we are not in a position to afford.

Other than the transmission, it’s in excellent mechanical shape with only 160,000 miles. Most of its use is very local and only occasional, so not a lot of wear on the brakes.

We would really love to find another friend or family or organization who could keep this truck going and make it available for community use, or even a couple people who want to split the cost (which we would be open to as well). We’ll even let you park it in front of our house.
